With all but Carmarthen and The New Saints having only three matches left before the end of the first phase
tension is rising as to who will make the top six.
Already safe in the top six are current leaders Airbus UK Broughton and reigning champions The New
Saints who have one game in hand on the Wingmakers. The remaining four spaces are up for grabs with
eight clubs still with a chance.
Bangor City and Newtown AFC are favourites both needing a point to mathematically secure their places.
But the battle for positions five and six is wide open with Carmarthen Town, Rhyl FC, Aberystwyth Town,
Prestatyn Town and Port Talbot Town fighting for not only the UEFA play-off places but also security from
relegation.
The top six will contest the championship and UEFA Europa League places whist the bottom six will fight
for the one, possibly two depending on Welsh Cup results, remaining play-off places and the stressful battle
against the drop.

Five feeder league clubs apply for Domestic Licence With the deadline now past the feeder league clubs applying for a Domestic licence are now known.
From the South only one club has applied – Haverfordwest County. The Bluebirds have consistently
secured their Licence since their relegation from the top level in 2011, but two third-place finishes behind
non-progressive clubs meant no promotion.
From the northern Huws Gray Alliance four clubs have shown their intent:
The perennially successive Llandudno FC and three former Welsh Premier League clubs in Conwy
Borough (formerly United), Flint Town United and current League leaders Cefn Druids.
The clubs have until the end of March to meet all criteria.

Kieran puts pen to paper and agrees new deal at Maes Tegid.
Bala Town are delighted to announce that striker Kieran Smith has extended his contract.
The twenty-one year old has had a successful start to his career at Maes Tegid making 16 (+4) appearances
and scoring 8 goals in all competitions. Colin Caton has this to say about the contract extension:

Saints: "The players were again fantastic today.
"When you come up against a side that is full time, train every day and get to work on things, we train
for an hour and a half a week, the players were fantastic.
"We set them up and they delivered the game plan to perfection, we could have scored three or four and
I thought we were absolutely outstanding.
"I don't think you'll see a better performance all season from any other Welsh Premier League team the
way we played today, especially against TNS.".'
PORT TALBOT TOWN www.porttalbottown.co.uk Director of football Scott Young was pleased with his side’s second-half performance and an upturn in fortune:
“Coming in at half-time I didn’t think we played particularly well and we needed that because there have been
plenty of times that we’ve played well and haven’t got what we deserved.
“I didn’t think we deserved to be 2-0 up at half-time but credit to the lads in the second-half as they different class
and put them to the sword.
The win leaves Port Talbot within six points of sixth-place in the table with three games remaining before the
mid-season split. However, Young refused to be drawn on the possibility of making a late claim for a spot in the
Championship Conference.
“I’m not interested [in where we are in relation to the top-six], we play Afan Lido next week and that’s all we’re
looking forward to. What comes after that comes after that,” he said.
“I’ve said all year that we’ve got a quality group of players in our dressing room and the results we were getting
weren’t good enough, but we had to carry on believing in them and that they will turn it around.”

claims the Corbett Sports Stadium manager was assaulted
after the draw with Prestatyn at Bastion Road.
Mark Cadwallader was back in the Lilywhites's matchday
squad for the derby against Prestatyn, following his recent
disciplinary hearing.
Cadwallader had been asked to face the disciplinary panel
to answer a charge of seriously breaching club discipline
at the recent away match at Airbus UK.
After hearing evidence from all concerned the club gave
Cadwallader a final warning as to his future conduct
whilst representing the club and was asked to sign a code
of conduct.
Cadwallader was included in the Lilywhites' macthday
squad against Prestatyn on Thursday and came on as a
76th minute substitute for Danny Hughes.
THE NEW SAINTS FC
www.tnsfc.co.uk Two years ago last Saturday, Craig Harrison
took over the reins at Park Hall Stadium.
However, Harrison had never considered
football management until a chance meeting at
a surprise birthday party.
Back in 2007, when The Saints were still
managed by Ken McKenna, the former
Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace and Preston
North End defender was thrown a surprise
30th birthday – and the entertainment was
provided by a band fronted by former
Wrexham midfielder Gareth Owen.
The Easy Street musician was the manager of
Airbus UK Broughton at the time and had been
looking for an assistant manager ever since the
departure of his trusted sidekick, Alan
Bickerstaffe.
Craig Harrison, now the successful Director of
Football at The New Saints, recalls the chance
meeting: “It’s really funny how Gareth and I
met.
“There was a surprise party organised to celebrate my 30th and his band was booked to come along and play. We
had a brief chat on the night and that is when I heard about the vacancy.
“I mulled over what he had said to me for a couple of weeks and then got in touch. He offered me the role and I
straight away started watching their performances.
“Since retiring from football I had always wanted to get back into the game and Gareth’s offer was the perfect
opportunity for me.
“With Gareth being a former professional I had a great deal of respect for him and because we have similar
backgrounds we both seemed to have the same ideas about how to take Airbus forward.”
Gateshead born Harrison, now 36, celebrates two years at TNS this month having joined the club in December
2011. In that time he has guided the Park Hall-based club to two Welsh Premier League titles and the Welsh Cup.
But it is a long way from where it all started.
The six foot tall defender signed YTS forms with Middlesbrough as a 16-year-old and was given his first team
debut two years later by then manager, and England legend, Bryan Robson.
By the time Harrison broke into the side there was a huge buzz on Teesside, with the attraction of Robson and the
generosity of Chairman Steve Gibson, resulting in the arrival of the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Fabrizio Ravanelli
and Juninho.
However, despite making an instant impact on the club’s fortunes, Harrison’s career was to become a mix of
unforgettable moments and horrendous injuries.
He recalls: “I had broken into the first team at Middlesbrough and everything was going well until I suffered a
burst appendix and was out of the game for 18 months.
“To be honest I was lucky to be alive as it was a really horrible injury – I ended up spending seven or eight weeks
in hospital.
“By the time I had recovered and was ready to fight for my place Middlesbrough had signed German international
left back Christian Ziege.
“To be fair to Bryan Robson, he told me I was second choice and would feature in the cup games and when Ziege
was unavailable, but at this stage of my career I was 21-years-old and had already made 30 or 40 first team
appearances so I decided it was best for me to drop down a division and join Crystal Palace.”
Before joining the Eagles, where he would go on to play under Trevor Francis, Steve Bruce and Ian Dowie, he
enjoyed a brief loan spell when David Moyes took him to Preston North End. But after impressing during seven
appearances for the North West club, Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith splashed £200,000 to take Harrison to
Selhurst Park.
“I enjoyed my time at Palace and during my first season I played in almost every game,” he added.
“At the start of my second season in London, Steve Bruce took over from Smith and things continued to go well,
until, in January 2002, I suffered a double compound fracture and never played football again.
“It was a similar injury to the one that ended David Busst’s career – it was a horrific injury that required blood
transfusions, skin graft and about 20 or so screws to fix me up.
“It was a really complex operation and it didn’t go to plan and I had to have a second one – it was at this point that
I knew my football career was over.
“The surgeon just turned around to me and said I would not be playing competitive football ever again.”
But despite having his childhood dreams torn away at the tender age of 25, Harrison prefers to look back at the
good times in life and has since being trying to coach what he has learned to good effect by firstly guiding The
Wingmakers up the division and then TNS to two titles.
“I played under some fantastic managers but I suppose if I was asked to name the ones who had a big bearing on
my career I would have to mention Bryan Robson, David Moyes and Dave Geddis,” added Harrison.
“Robbo was the man who gave me my league debut after signing for the club as a YTS. He was always really
helpful and I even got to play alongside him a couple of times which was amazing.
“And while I have always been a defender I would say it was David Moyes - now manager at Manchester United -
who taught me the real art of defending. He would keep us behind for extra sessions and really focus on positional
play.
“Finally there is Dave Geddis, who at the time was the youth and reserve team boss at Boro, he had a huge
influence on me in my early years and remains a close friend to this day.”
It is not just football bosses that Harrison has learnt from – when you line-up alongside side some of the greatest
footballers of a generation and come close to reaching a major cup final at Wembley on three separate occasions –
how can you do anything but learn?
“In many ways I was very unlucky to have my career cut so short, but for such a short professional career I did an
awful lot,” he continued.
“I played in the Premier League, I have a Division One winners medal and I have played alongside the likes of
Paul Gascoigne, Juninho, Paul Ince, Mark Schwarzer, Paul Merson, Bryan Robson, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Neil
Ruddock and Andy Johnson.
“I also played in three League Cup semi-finals, where with Crystal Palace we beat Liverpool 2-1 in the first leg at
Selhurst Park before eventually getting stuffed 5-1 at Anfield.”.

THE LAST WORD from Gwyn Derfel I had the privilege of being in Prestatyn on Boxing Day. But it was the only goal-less game of the day I
hear you say! That may be true – but as ‘nil-nils’ go – it was an entertaining game.
However the true highlight of the afternoon happened during the post-match speeches in the clubhouse
when Prestatyn players, coaching staff and committee members paid tribute to Phil Merrick in his last
home game as club chairman.
Phil Merrick has been a successful businessman in the world of banking and he has certainly brought a
more efficient and fresh mentality to running the club during his short time at the helm. He has without
doubt embraced the concept of making sure that the club is a community hub and he definitely leaves
them in a far healthier position than when he took over two years ago.
During that period of course Prestatyn won the Welsh Cup and represented Wales admirably in Europe
for the first time in their history – so the new Chairperson will certainly have big boots to fill.
On a personal note – I wish Phil the best of luck in his new venture – but will certainly miss his
positivity and his constructive straight talking. Welsh football needs people like him who have
succeeded in business - who have a passion for the game and also have the skills and drive to make a
genuine difference.
Thank you to Phil and to every single club official in the Corbett Sports WPL who have invested time
and genuine love for their clubs and our League during 2013. Our National League certainly would not
be continuously improving without your efforts.

hynny cefais fraint gwirioneddol wedi’r chwiban olaf wrth glywed aelodau o dîm a phwyllgor y clwb
cartref yn talu teyrngedau i’r cadeirydd Phil Merrick yn ei gêm gartref olaf wrth y llyw.
Mae Phil Merrick wedi llwyddo ym myd bancio ac mae wedi bod fel chwa o awyr iach yn ei ddwy
flynedd fel cadeirydd. Mae wedi sicrhau bod y clwb yn cael ei redeg yn llawer mwy proffesiynol ac mae
hefyd wedi ehangu gorwelion y clwb i sicrhau cysylltiadau llawer agosach gyda’r gymuned leol.
Yn ei ddwy flynedd wrth y llyw – enillodd Prestatyn Gwpan Cymru a chynrychioli Cymru’n
anrhydeddus am y tro cyntaf erioed yn Ewrop wrth gwrs. Bydd gan y cadeirydd nesaf dipyn o ‘sgidiau
i’w llenwi!
Hoffwn ddiolch i Phil am ei gyfraniad a dymuno’n dda iddo yn ei fusnes newydd. Wedi dweud hynny
bydd ei ymadawiad yn golled i’r Cynghrair yn ogystal ậ’r clwb. Mae angen pobl sydd wedi llwyddo ym
myd busnes i gynorthwyo’r broses o sicrhau datblygiad gwirioneddol pellach yn ein Huwch Gynghrair.
