beings to make choices on the world.- Human agency entails the uncontroversial,
weaker claim that humans do in fact make decisions and enact them to the world.

Activity Theory (of aging)A Theory of aging
that proposes that higher levels of activity and involvement are directly related to higher levels of satisfaction in older adults.
Disengagement Theory (of aging) Theory of social gerontology
that suggests that as elderly individuals grow older, they gradually decrease their social interactions and ties and become increasingly self-preoccupied.
Example: “Once a year or so I give myself a day away… I inform housemates, my family, and close friends that I will not be reachable for twenty-four hours; the then I disengage the telephone” (p.137).
Ego Integrity vs. Ego Despair Integrity- Accepting oneself and
seeing one’s life as meaningful.Despair- Rejecting oneself and
one’s life.
Examples: Death and Legacy- “When I think of
death, and of late the idea has come with alarming frequency, I seem at peace with the idea that a day will dawn when I will no longer be among those living in this valley” (p. 47). [Despair]
Getups- “You will always be in fashion if you are true to yourself” (p.57).[Integrity]
“I realize that living well is an art which can be developed. Of course, You will need the basic talents to build upon: They are a love of life and ability to take great pleasure from small offerings, an assurance that the world owes you nothing and every gift is exactly that, a gift” (p. 65). [Integrity]
Continuity TheoryIndividuals adapt to changes
by using the same coping styles they have used throughout the life course, and they adopt new roles that substitute for roles lost because of age.
- In the past we saw how Maya Angelou was writing in a different way. She was providing her readers with a detailed description of some of her life experiences that she lived in certain stages of her life.
- Now in her late adulthood we still see Maya Angelou writing, but now she is providing her readers with her reflections on some of her life experiences.
Feminist Theory & Life Course PerspectiveFeminist Theory Gender is a key factor in
understanding a person’s aging experience.
Ex: “Being a woman is hard work” (p.6).
Life Course Perspective Aging is a dynamic, lifelong
process characterized by many transitions.
Ex: Maya Angelou writes this book in a life course perspective taking in consideration certain stages of her life.
Naomi Judd attend Dr. Maya Angelou's 82nd birthday party with friends and family at Angelou's home on May 20, 2010 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Social Exchange TheoryResource exchanges in
interpersonal interactions change with age.
Ex: Older persons get involved in volunteer activities; this activity may also be seen as fulfilling an emotional need that provides a personal gain.
Ex: “The New Testament informs the reader that it is more blessed to give than to receive” (p. 15)
