After 29 amazing days, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games came to an
end on September 9th; the Games of the XXX Olympiad have truly inspired a
generation. Last month, the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic
Association announced that the London 2012 education programme, Get Set, will
continue to work with schools across the UK to integrate the Olympic and Paralympic
values into the KS3 and KS4 curriculum and maintain the wonderful legacy that

Ex-South Africa Rugby International visits Worthing High School
On Monday 12th November, WHS were privileged to welcome rugby legend Thinus Delport to
work with over 100 students on a rugby and fitness development day. Thinus has taken the
role of National Athlete Mentor within the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme and visits
schools as a thank you for running sporting projects. Miss Field has run a variety of projects
during this academic year to help students to develop and improve their self-confidence and
aspirations through the medium of sport. Thinus held a special assembly for all GCSE PE,
Dance and BTEC sport students then proceeded to deliver five coaching sessions to a range of
students throughout the day.
Thinus has played at Wing and Full Back for Gloucester, Worcester Warriors and South Africa.
He has also represented a Southern Hemisphere team, competing against some of the world’s
greatest rugby players. Some of his greatest battles on the rugby pitch have been against the All
Blacks and Australia, in particular Jonah Lomu. The day was a wonderful success and
thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Worthing High’s Year 10 Rugby team – District Champions
Worthing High’s Year 10 Rugby team have had a fantastic season, winning 5 of their 6 league
games booking themselves a spot in the District Final held at Worthing Rugby Club.
The boys started their league campaign with two very tough games against The
Littlehampton Academy (TLA) and Steyning Grammar School. Both games were very physical in
nature which saw Worthing emerge victorious from their encounter with TLA 7 – 5, with only
Worthing High’s precise kicking separating the two teams. Worthing were a little slow out of
blocks against a very strong Steyning Grammar School side and half time saw the boys 16 – 0
down, but Worthing’s resilience shone through taking the second half 10 – 0; final score Steyning
16 – 10 Worthing High. What followed in the remaining games of the season was a fantastic
display of physical strength, speed and precise and secure ball handling. The boys swept aside
Shoreham Academy 39 – 0, Durrington High School 27 – 0 and St. Andrews 20 – 12, setting
themselves up with a date with the only unbeaten side in the league thus far, Chatsmore Catholic
High School.
The final proved to be their toughest challenge of the season; the game was very physical in
nature with most of the action centred between the 22 yard lines. However, Worthing High’s
dogged determination won through and Chatsmore had no answer to the speed and strength of
Worthing High’s two centres; final score Worthing High 19 – 0 Chatsmore Catholic High School.
Of the teams successes over the season Mr Morris, team manager said, “Over the past 3 years I
have watched the boys grow in ability and confidence to the point now where they are playing
some fantastic open rugby and have really matured as a unit. I look forward to the team building
on their successes this year in the 2013 season.” The Year 10 coach, Mr. Stringer was equally em-
phatic in his praise for the boys, “The boys have worked so hard this season and I am very happy
with their performances, some have a great future ahead of them.”

Worthing High Go ‘Penny’ crazy!
Worthing High school raised well over £200 for Children in Need this year. Money was raised by Rachel Richie in
Year 9 making and selling her own Pudsey cakes. All Worthing High school students competed in the PE
Department’s annual Community Tug-of-War competition: TGI being crowned Grand Champions of
2012. Finally, Tarring community raised over £80 in the ‘penny line’ competition. This year saw TNS, TIK and
TFI tutor groups create lines between 25-30m totally to over £20 a line! Miss Field Leader of PE said ‘it was
wonderful to see how generous our students here at Worthing High school are, students’ enthusiasm and
commitment to raising money for Children in Need was commendable. We are looking to raise even more next
year’.

Girls Under 14 Football
The girls finished a fabulous 2nd and 3rd
in the U14 District football tournament.
Excellent skills, determination and
fitness allowed the girls to play some
super football. Great saves, strong
defence and creative attacking play were
all on display. Well done to all girls
who took part; I look forward to
working with the girls throughout the
district league starting in January 2013.

Guinness World Record Holder Is Aiming For The Top
Lewis Strotten in 9BHN has been shooting for three and a half years and is a member of the
Aldingbourne and District Target Shooting Club. Two weeks ago he participated in the Sussex
County Division 6 50m rifle competition and demolished the opposition achieving first place and
a gold medal. He shot the cards over 25 metres at Fittleworth Shooting Range whilst using a .22lr
target rifle. In 2011, he participated in his first Under-16 British championship at the famous
Bisley range and he won the Chanctonbury Cup, which is a competition open to shooting
enthusiasts aged up to 21 from all across West Sussex. Lewis’s exploits have gained him national
recognition, as he has been invited to the Great Britain junior team trials in January. If that wasn’t
enough, Lewis also holds the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to shoot 100/100 at
the age of 11. What a fantastic achievement! Lewis hopes to progress through the ranks and
represent GB at a senior level one day.

Sussex Academy side within the next couple of years and

Sussex in the future. We wish you all the best for the
future!

Sky Living For Sport Project
Sixteen keen, enthusiastic Year 8 students have been selected to be part of the
Sky Living for Sport Project. As part of the project students are giving up one
lunch time a week to meet as a group to create a dance based on their transition
experience of moving from middle to secondary school. All students have been
working really hard and are looking forward to performing the dance when it is
finished.

Rugby mad students experience privileged opportunity at Harlequins
A diverse mix of forty five students from all year groups had the opportunity to travel up to London and take part in a
training session run by professional coaches at Harlequins RFC last week. The session was due to take part on the training
pitch but due to the fading light, the students had the great privilege of training on the famous Twickenham Stoop pitch; an
honour that no other school has had. The Worthing High students showed how well they could behave and listen as their
skills were pushed to the limit by the very experienced coaches.
After the training session, students had the opportunity to ask Quins’ first team player Olly Kohn questions about his
pre-game preparation, diet and routines before a top class game and also had a photo opportunity with him. The WHS
party then donned their hats, scarves and gloves to settle down to watch a winter’s evening of rugby; Harlequins versus
Bath in the LV Cup. It was a very entertaining game with some players performing magnificently. To the delight of the
students, Harlequins won 21-12 with great performances from upcoming Fly Half Ben Botica and Winger Seb Stegmann.
The Harlequins coaches were very impressed at the behaviour and attitude on display and have invited a WHS group back
in the future; Mr. Gill and Mr. Stringer are looking into another exciting opportunity at the Stoop in the New Year so listen
out for the announcement soon!

he has just become the vice captain of Worthing

named Worthing’s ‘Young Referee of the Year’.
Voted for by the Managers themselves, this is a
great accolade for Josh and he truly has a bright
future. Well done to you both! Mr. Gill

U16 NETBALL 2012
Well done to the U16 Netball Squad players who magnificently came together to play in the U16
League at the start of the year. We entered two teams into the league this year, one Year 11 team
and one Year 10 team. Both teams worked well to produce some fine netball in a very competitive
league – each team managing an equal number of wins, draws and losses over the course of their
eight matches.
Good Luck for next season and to the Year 11’s in their chosen sports next year – a special thanks
for your enthusiastic commitment since Year 8!

enjoyable event. Teams from Worthing High,

all, a strong sense of fair play and sportsmanship

Culver and Florence Mason & Jimmee Wood
worked hard in every game; the eventual
