What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive,

Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ.

Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope—proclaiming God’s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness.

If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You’re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor’s Center located next to Sources of Hope.

Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section.

Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore.

Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ!

I sincerely hope that you are feeling blessed this morning, and that you enter this space with a sense of awe and wonder, anticipation and excitement.

Over the past few weeks, we have explored some of the Biblical characters that God chose to do extraordinary things. In our exploration, we have discovered that those whom we have often put on a pedestal, called our heroes, and looked to as role models, have not been perfect.Like us, God chooses ordinary people. Abraham was considered too old, Jeremiah and Timothy too young. Moses tried numerous times to get out of responding to God’s call. Naomi, who lived under oppressive circumstances, was able to use those same circumstances to God’s advantage. Each of these characters were not perfect, but they were ready to respond. We each ask ourselves, in our imperfectness, “Am I ready?” Are we ready to do and be all that God intends and hopes for us in our everyday living? Are we ready, as the prophet Micah would ask us, “to act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8) These are the extraordinary acts that God leads us into today. To act justly, to love mercy, and to live humbly.Today, we look at the imperfect life of John the Baptizer. He was the forerunner of Jesus and would prepare the way. John would ask people to repent of their sins in preparation for the Good News of Jesus. However, just like us, John would later question his faith and belief in Jesus. He would ask the question, “Are you the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:3). The cost of following Jesus was high for John, and perhaps like us, he somehow believed that believing in, and following of, Jesus would ensure a golden ticket through life and a path directly into heaven. As we gather today, we do so in our faith and in our doubt, in our ability to be perfectly imperfect and to authentically bring our whole selves into this sacred moment. We come together to once again look for the signs and wonders of God who takes us just as we are, and makes us ready to act justly, to love mercy, and to live humbly with our God.If you are not perfect, you are ready!Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. O Savior, Let Me Walk with Thee

Washington Gladden (1836-1911) wrote this poem for a devotional column, “The Still Hour,” and published it in his magazine Sunday Afternoon (1879). He never intended that this poem be converted into a hymn, but it was first published as such one year later in Charles H. Richards’ Songs of Christian Praise. H. Percy Smith (1825-1898) composed the tune MARYTON in 1874 for the hymn “Sun of My Soul.” It was Gladden’s preferred tune for his hymn. The lush, movie score-like setting played by the orchestra this morning is by contemporary church composer and arranger Jay Rouse.

O for a WorldMiriam Therese Winter (b. 1938) wrote this text for the Presbyterian Women’s Triennial Conference in 1982, and revised it in 1987. It was published in the Presbyterian Hymnal (1990) prior to its appearance in the United Church of Christ’s New Century Hymnal. Sister Miriam Therese Winter is a Roman Catholic Medical Mission Sister, theologian, writer and songwriter. She serves as Professor of Liturgy, Worship, Spirituality and Feminist Studies at Hartford (Connecticut) Seminary, a historically related seminary of the United Church of Christ.

HEBREW LESSON Proverbs 22: 17-18, 22-23 The Message

Listen carefully to my wisdom; take to heart what I can teach you. You’ll treasure its sweetness deep within; you’ll give it bold expression in your speech. Don’t walk on the poor just because they’re poor, and don’t use your position to crush the weak, because GOD will come to their defense; the life you took, GOD will take from you and give back to them.

**GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 3: 1-12

One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Come, Holy Spirit. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, O God.

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Change your hearts and minds, for the reign of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of our God.’” John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. At that time the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

One: This is the Gospel of Hope. All: Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit.

SERMON If You’re Not Perfect, You’re Ready Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas John the Baptist

I Think It’s Going to Rain TodayThis poignant and melancholy song, with words and music by Academy and Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, and pianist Randy Newman, beautifully portrays the juxtaposition of the darkness and light that is found in our lives. It sings about the loss we will all experience at some point, and the kindness that will follow, like raindrops at first, then eventually overflowing like a river. Don’t despair if you feel lonely and hurt. Love, God’s love (as described in the final verse, “help the needy and show them the way”) will always be there for you. This song, a lament, but with a vision of mercy and redemption, has been recorded by Bette Midler, Judy Collins, Dusty Springfield, Norah Jones, Peter Gabriel, and Audra McDonald, in addition to Randy’s own recording from 1968.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS

TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God’s feast for all peoples. We don’t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion.

Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself—take a wafer and dip it in the juice—in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server.

During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our “Music during Communion”. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION

Have Thine Own Way, Lord Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way!

Thou art the potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me after thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way! Wounded and weary, help me I pray.

Power, all power surely is thine! Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way! Hold o’er my being absolute sway! Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see Christ only, always living in me.

Praise You Lord, I come to you today with a simple prayer to pray.

In everything I do, let my life, Oh Lord, praise you. Praise you, praise you; let my life praise you.

Praise you, praise you; let my life, Oh Lord, praise you. Lord, you formed me out of clay. And for your glory I was made.

Use this vessel as you choose. Let my life, Oh Lord, praise you. Praise you, praise you; let my life praise you.

Welcome Dale Hansen2018 Hero of Hope!

Dale Eugene Hansen (born August 2, 1948) is an American sportscaster who is currently the weeknight sports anchor during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts on ABC’s Dallas affiliate WFAA. He also hosts Dale

Hansen’s Sports Special on Sundays at 10:35 p.m., consistently one of the highest-rated local programs in Dallas-Fort Worth. His segment each night gar-ners an audience of over 300,000 people. He also serves as the station’s Sports Director.Hansen made his reputation in 1986 when he and his producer, John Sparks, broke a story about a massive scandal involving payments to players on Southern Methodist University’s football team. Hansen’s reporting ultimately led to the NCAA canceling the Mustangs’ 1987 season—the so-called “death penalty.” His reporting of the scandal garnered him a Peabody Award for distin-guished journalism, a duPont-Columbia Award, and several death threats.Hansen became nationally and even internationally famous in recent years when his commentaries on matters such as racism, homophobia and domestic violence were circulated widely on YouTube. A 2015 profile of Hansen at the now-defunct Grantland site noted that many viewers assumed Hansen was a former conservative, when in fact he has been politically liberal his entire adult life and his views have often clashed with the mostly-conservative Dallas fan base of the Cowboys and Mavericks. (source: wikipedia)Today, we honor Mr. Hansen as our 2018 Hero of Hope.

Alan Ross Texas Freedom ParadeSunday, September 16, line-up 1 p.m.

This year’s overall parade theme “Vote No H8 In The Lone Star ST8” is dedi-cated to bringing awareness to the ideology that love, equality, inclusion, com-passion, liberation and hope are rights for ALL, not just SOME. Cathedral of Hope’s message that “Jesus Didn’t Reject People. Neither Do We” will be incorporated into many aspects of our parade entry as well as our booths at the Music Festival on Saturday, September 15.Online registration is open for those wishing to register online to participate in our parade entry. We will begin in-person registration starting Wednesday, August 29.We will be sharing additional information around a special “call to action” activity Cathedral of Hope will be asking the members of our congregation to participate in over the week leading up to the parade. This is a call to action we know YOU WILL WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN.Cathedral of Hope will be providing a give-away to be thrown or handed to individuals in the crowd. We would ask that individuals participating DO NOT purchase their own items to throw or handout to the crowd. Only CoH approved give-away items will be allowed.

Miller Lite Music Festival Reverchon ParkSaturday, September 15 (11:00 am – 7:00 pm)

This year Cathedral of Hope will have presence during the music festival with booths in both the general music festival area as well as within the Teen Pride Zone. Our goal is to make the community more aware of who Cathedral of Hope is and the many ways we are working within the community to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. We are looking for a few volunteers to help at our booth location within the main festival area. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact [email protected] or by printing MUSIC FESTIVAL in the comment section of the attendance pads.

Today in Children’s Church

John the Baptist was an oddity in the first century. The Gospel writer, Matthew, describes him as a person who wore clothing made of the skins

of camels with a leather belt around his waist. What he was wearing was Old Testament clothing in a New Testament world and reminded people of the Prophet Elijah. Living in the desert wilderness, surviving on a diet of locusts and honey, John was not the most likely to succeed, but Jesus called him the greatest man alive. Stretch Out Your Hand: Healing Prayer Group

According to Tilda Norberg and Robert Webber, “Christian healing is a process that involves the totality of our being—body, mind, emotion, spirit, and our social context—and that directs us toward becoming the person God is calling us to be at every stage of our living and our dying” (Stretch Out Your Hand: Exploring Healing Prayer). Today, for a number of reasons, our spirits are scattered and exhausted, in need of rest and healing. We are often like the blind Bartimaeus crying out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy upon me!” We need mindful attention to wholeness and, as the body of Christ, are called to pray for one another. The group Stretch Out Your Hand begins with reading, response journaling, guided meditation, and dialogue about Norberg and Webber’s book. At the end of each meeting, we will pray together for each other, and other members of the congregation, and share prayers for the world as well. At the end of the 4 weeks, we will become a once a month prayer group deepening our own prayer lives and opening to the Spirit’s power in us as we pray for others. Please join us as we withdraw together to heal ourselves, others, and the world. The group meets Tuesday nights, September: 4, 11, 18, 25 from 6:30-8 p.m. and then will decide together which night is best for the ongoing monthly meeting. Contact the facilitator, Dr. Pat Saxon, at [email protected] with any questions.

Fear+Less DialoguesDrawing on a community’s collec-tive voices—from “doctors to drug dealers”—Fear+Less Dialogues seeks real solutions to problems of chronic unemployment, violence, and hopelessness. The program’s founder, Gregory C. Ellison, and his team have created conversations among community members who have never spoken to one another, the goal of which are real, imple-mentable, and lasting changes to the life of the community. These com-munity transformations are based on both face-to-face encounter and substantive analysis of the problems the community faces. In his book Fear+Less Dialogues: A New Movement for Justice, Ellison makes this same kind of analysis available to readers, walking them through the steps that must be taken to find common ground in our divid-ed communities and then to implement genuine and lasting change.
