Pastor’s Letter

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Happy Epiphany to you all! The Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated January 6, was originally the day when Christians celebrated the birth of Jesus. In fact, they celebrated three big events all in one day: Jesus’ birth, his baptism, and the miracle of turning water into wine. Throughout the years, the observances of these events were separated.

With all the celebrations and ceremony surrounding Christmas, both inside the church and in the wider society, Epiphany is often an afterthought. Originally, though, Epiphany was the more important of the two occasions.

Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles, specifically in the Magi. When the Magi came through Jerusalem looking for the king that had been revealed to them in the stars, the religious scholars consulted the sacred texts and could not believe that such an event had taken place. They were so concerned their expectations of religion, that they could not see the flesh and blood God in front of them.

We might ask ourselves whether we too are sometimes blind to the ways that God is being revealed. Do we get caught up in what we expect of God and miss the unexpected? Do we get so busy in our mundane, everyday lives that we do not notice God’s inbreaking among us?

This Epiphany, I want us to challenge ourselves to be more open and attuned to where God might be. It might not be the places we are used to finding or expecting God. This Epiphany, at the end of every day, or the end of every week, try to take a few minutes to reflect: Where did you encounter the divine? Was it in another person or a relationship? Perhaps through an unexpected event or opportunity?

It is my hope that this exercise will become more than a simple exercise. That we will be more willing to see God at work in our lives. That we will be more open to where God might be

speaking to us and calling us. I pray that this lasts the whole of the year, not just the season of Epiphany.

received. We extend a special

thank you to Carol Hammarberg

and to David Stanton for

transporting all of these wonderful

gifts to KenCrest. Christmas

morning was much more joyful

with all of your gifts.

Winter Rally Day is January 7th! On Winter Rally Day, we’ll have one service at 9:30. Immediately following the service we’ll be participating in 3 service projects as a congregation. The three service projects:

1. Assembling Baby Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief (items for the Baby Care Kits will be collected during advent in the parish hall)

2. Cleaning the Kitchen 3. Undecorating the Church from Christmas

After our service projects are complete, we’ll be hosting an Empty Bowls luncheon. Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger on a community level. Members of our church have sculpted and/or glazed ceramic bowls throughout this past year at VBS, a Women’s Dinner, and confirmation class. If you would like to come to the Empty Bowls luncheon, the price of your ticket will include a ceramic bowl and a simple meal of soup and bread (the meal will be served in disposable bowls so you can keep your ceramic bowl clean to take home). The money raised from the Empty Bowls luncheon will be donated to support Aid for Friends and the Ardmore Food Pantry. We hope to see you there!

St. Paul’s Women’s Retreat Friday-Saturday, January 19-20, 2018

Location: Franciscan Spiritual Center, Aston, PA

Leader: The Rev. Linnéa Clark, St. John’s Lutheran Church

in Melrose Park

Title: Common Ground: Encounters Between Islam and Christianity

The retreat will explore the beliefs and practices of Islam and their

surprising commonalities with Christianity.

Leader: The Rev. Linnéa Clark is the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran

Church in Melrose Park, PA. A native of western Massachusetts, Pastor

Clark earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees from Yale

University. She serves on the board of the Cheltenham Area Multifaith

Council and is an advocate for inter-religious understanding. Pastor

Clark is also a musician and liturgical writer and composer. She lives in

Melrose Park with her three cats.

Schedule: The retreat runs from 6pm on Friday through

Saturday at 3pm.

Cost: $80 (scholarships available) Please note that the registration fee

includes overnight accommodations, breakfast, lunch, meeting space

rental and the retreat leader’s expenses and honorarium.

Attention Committee Chairpersons

Annual reports on all activities for the year 2017 are

due now. Please note that reports are expected from

all committees, subcommittees and groups.

An essential volunteer activity at St. Paul’s is

counting the donations each Sunday. Although most

of us may not be aware of this effort, it really is

important.

We need additional volunteers for counting

beginning in 2018. Here is what it entails:

Volunteers are assigned to Teams (with a Captain to guide

things) and are asked to serve 6-8 Sundays a year.

The Counters meet in the Finance Room (on the second floor

next to the Library) immediately after the conclusion of the second

service. They organize and count the offerings, document the funds, and

prepare the proceeds to be deposited in our bank.

The entire process takes about 30 minutes.

What do Counters get from this? They are helping with an essential,

although not high profile function at St. Paul’s. You get to meet and

work with other members in a regular rotation.
