does connect us to
Israel: through the
booths in which we
dwell, the lulav and
Etrog we wave in all
directions, and our
recognition that
Mother Nature has
the power to control
our lives, for better
or for worse.
Given the devastation
that hurricanes,
floods, and
earthquakes have
caused not so far
from our own homes,
it is important for us
to be humble in the
face of natural forces.
The fact that we can
wish each other a
happy festive season
is a gift from God
that should not be
taken for granted.
Everyone knows that,
when you wish someone a
happy Jewish new year,
you say “Shana Tova” - or
“Shana Tova u-Metukah”
for a happy and sweet
New Year.
But there’s also a special
greeting and response for
the festival days that
follow our Days of Awe.
Throughout Sukkot, the
proper greeting is
“Moadim l’Simcha,” or
“[May these festival] days
be for rejoicing.” The
response is “Chagim u-
z’manim l’sasson,” or
“[May these] festivals and
appointed times be for
joy.” It’s a call and
response using slightly
different Hebrew phrases
that mean much the same
thing.
This call and response
is not just a nice and
respectful way to speak
to others. It is a
reminder that , as you
call out to someone
else, you yourself are
acknowledging and
taking part in this
special time on the
Jewish calendar.
I always feel like Sukkot
gets left behind, at least
here in the United
States where we are
not so tied to the land
and to the seasons as
people are in Israel.
We’ve just gone
through our High Holy
Days and some people
are just “shul’d out.”
Yet Sukkot remains
one of our most
important holidays
precisely because it

Thanks for Hurricane Harvey Help
A special thank you to all who donated gi cards
to help vicms of Hurricane Harvey get back on
their feet. We collected and sent to Houston
more than $1,000 worth of gi cards!
Dear Congregants,
It’s hard for me to believe that we are in the Jewish New Year once again. Time goes so very quickly any more. The High
Holidays at the Temple were once again very inspiraonal and met with much support from the congregaon. Thank you to all
who a,ended, and a huge thanks to all who parcipated in the services. One of my goals for this year is to see even more
people parcipate in all services. The personal touch of parcipaon provides fervor to us as individuals, and to us as a
congregaon. Our congregants, along with our wonderful Rabbi, provide the life force for our Temple. Let’s make this life
force as strong as possible.
We will be having our Simchat Torah service and celebraon this upcoming Friday. It is always such a great service. To be
able to celebrate, read from (thanks Anne,e Shaw and Alex Thaler), and have hands on contact with our Torahs is such a
Mitzvah. If you can find me in your schedules this Friday evening, please join us. We will even have the debut of our new
Shabbat band!
Thanks to all who a,ended our Sukkot celebraon last Friday night. It was a very fun evening. We even had several new
young families join us for our service and celebraon. There is strength in numbers. But not just numbers, quality guests and
congregants are what make our celebraons so very special.
It is my hope that each of you and your families have a New Year filled with good health and much happiness. I hope to see
all of you soon.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Thaler

Bereshit: Gen. 1.1-6.8.
In this Torah poron, God cre-
ates the world. Aer Adam and
Eve eat the forbidden fruit,
they are banished from the
Garden of Eden. Later Cain kills
Abel. God then considers de-
stroying all of Creaon.

Noah: Gen. 6.9-11.32.
In this Torah poron, God pun-
