Solemnity of The Assump-tion of The Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday of this week, August 15, is the Solem-nity of the As-sumption of the

Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a holy day of obligation, so we will have a Vigil Mass on Wednesday, August 14th at 5:30 p.m. and Masses the feast day at 6:00 a.m. 12:05 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

A prayer activity you might consider in conjunction with the celebration of Her Assumption is asking our Blessed Mother to intercede for our country in the “Novena for Our Nation,” a nation-wide prayer campaign in which all are invited pray the 54-day rosary novena beginning August 15 (Feast of Our La-dy of the Assumption) through Octo-ber 7 (Feast of Our Lady of the Ro-sary). Individuals can vis-

it rosarycoasttocoast.com to receive daily novena reflections and/or more information about this event. Infor-mation can also be found at diolaf.org/other.

In addition to our other Marian devo-tions, we have also added a Saturday morning daily Mass to our liturgical schedule. Just as we traditionally wor-ship and meditate upon the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Fridays (especially First Friday), we also traditionally ven-erate the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Saturdays (especially First Saturday). When permitted by liturgical norms, many of the Saturday Masses will focus on how our Blessed Mother teaches us about her Son Jesus. Saturday Masses will be at 7:30am, with Confessions being heard a half hour before.

Back to School Next week, we will be welcoming our students at St. Pius Elementary back to school. The new school year is always a time of good spirits and excitement

for the students, faculty and staff. With the guidance of our principal, Donna Lemaire, as well as the faculty, staff and parents of SPES, I am confident that our children will be well served in body and spirit in the upcoming school year. As I’ve had a year to observe, St. Pius Elementary School simply does an outstanding job of providing our chil-dren with a quality Catholic education, and I encourage every parent to con-sider it for the education of their chil-dren.

Finally, for parents who were out of town last weekend, it was announced that next month we will begin “Young Saints” on Sunday mornings before the 9am and 11am Mass for our children in kindergarten through the 5th Grade. We are very excited about this program and have received overwhelming posi-tive feedback. It is open to all our chil-dren, but also serves as our catechetical program. We left informational materi-als in the Gathering Area for those who were not here last weekend.

WHAT IS YOUNG SAINTS? Young Saints is a youth ministry for-mation program for K-5th graders that will create an engaging opportunity to encounter Jesus by bringing more awareness in Mass through a deeper understanding of the Gospel.

Young Saints infuses a culture of worship through song, prayer and group discussions, with a height-ened awareness of the three per-sons of the Holy Trinity, particular-ly the Holy Spirit.

Young Saints enriches our parish community by building genuine Christ-centered friendships at an early age and redirecting the fami-ly’s focus back to Sundays.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Isn’t this just PSR rebranded? A: No. While Young Saints will include

the required Catechetical elements, this is for ALL K-5th Grade children at Saint Pius X. Q: My child attends Catholic school, why should he/she attend Young Saints? A: Young Saints will help them to en-gage in Mass, learn more about their faith and provide an opportunity to interact with other children within the Parish in a safe environment. Q: Will this prepare my child for First Communion? A: Yes. Young Saints will serve as the preparation program for any child who is registered to receive the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Q: Why do we have two sessions? A: This allows parents to choose a ses-sion most convenient for their Mass schedule. Young Saints also prepares participants for that week’s Mass.

Q: How can I register my child? A: Visit stpiusxchurch.org/ys-sign-up. Q: What are parents supposed to do for 45 minutes before Mass? A: Coffee will be available in the Parish Life Center each Sunday offering fel-lowship and community. You can also take this time for yourself and/or your spouse to prepare for Mass by: praying in the church, visiting the adoration chapel or going to confession when it is offered. Childcare is also available in the St. Paul Room for younger children. For more information, please visit stpiusxchurch.org/young-saints, or contact James Opdenhoff, Youth Minister at [email protected] or (337) 232-4656, ext. 215.
