Statistics on the Provincial Books for Worship becoming Available

Electronically

Overview

An online survey was taken throughout the Province the West Indies from March

24th 2014 to May 03rd 2014 (40 days). The purpose of the questionnaire was to

provide statistical feedback to the Secretariat of the Province of the West Indies.

This data will assist to make a calculated decision on whether or not to convert

our Book of Common Prayer and CPWI Hymn Book to electronic form. Notably,

there is no intention to replace the traditional paper-based books. The result of

this survey is taken from a sample of the provincial population to ensure that a

decision is not made based on subjective means or opinions but on data and logic.

The survey was taken online and was distributed using social media and email.

277 Anglicans throughout our Province participated in the questionnaire. Three

charts have been created to display the results of the questionnaire.

Highlights from Results

Most of the people who were uncertain or disapproved of having the Prayer Book

and CPWI Hymn books available in electronic form saw it as a distraction in

church. This can be countered by tweaking device setting to reduce the

opportunity for distractions.

Comparably, most of the people who approved of having the Prayer Book and

CPWI Hymn books available in electronic form saw the move as progressive and

practical in the following ways:

I. The convenience of walking with one device compared to 3 or more books

to church service.

II. Assists the visually impaired to see the text clearly.

III. Helps musicians to source and play hymns.

IV. Encourage our youth to attend church and follow the service as they

interact with technology easily.

V. Some Anglicans are already typing out the books to display them on

multimedia screens.

VI. It contributes to our stewardship to the environment as it should see the

reduction of the amount of paper being used.

VII. It can help extend Anglicanism globally.

Highlights from Diocesan Participation

It was challenging to reach the span of the entire province online. The

questionnaire originated from the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago. Therefore,

questionnaire participation was strongest from this particular diocese.

Summary

What is in it for me?

It will be a monumental milestone in the history of the Anglican Church within

our Province. The results of the questionnaire show that this enhancement will

positively impact people and the way that they worship. Nothing will give me

greater joy than to be a part of that. This project has no financial gain for me.

What about our printed books?

Our traditional paper books for worship will remain relevant for a long time. For

example, the prevalence of email has not seen the extinction of traditional postal

mail. Paper will always be needed no matter how technologically advance we

progress. Both electronic and paper versions of our worship books complement

each other. They will be sold on 2 different markets (one online and the other on

the display shelves). It is possible to develop sale strategies to sell them together.

I appeal to the Secretariat of the Province of the West Indies to take the initiative

as publishers of the Book of Common Prayer and the CPWI Hymn Book to review

and scrutinize the data produced in this report. The future of the Province is in

your hands. I pray that God and logic guides your final decision.
