FOCUS ON WORSHIP
THE DAY OF PENTECOST: The word “Pentecost” is Greek for “the fiftieth day.” Pentecost is a principle
festival of the Church year, celebrating the decent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples fifty days after Easter
(see Acts 2:1-4). This day is also known as “Whitsunday,” a reference to the white garments of Bap-
tism. Pentecost is the final day of the Easter season. This festival commemorates the descent of the Holy
Spirit and the Baptism of 3,000 converts. It celebrates the sending of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and other
followers of Jesus Christ (120 in all), as described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1–31. We celebrate the Spirit,
through whom and in whom the people of God are created and re-created. Red is the liturgical color of The
Day of Pentecost. We invite the congregation to WEAR RED as a part of our Worship celebration. Pentecost
will be celebrated on June 4, 2017. THE HOLY TRINITY The Holy Trinity (Latin for “three”) is a principal festival of the Church year, which is celebrated every year
on the First Sunday after Pentecost. This festival is intended as a celebration of the mystery of God. On this
day the Church recalls events in salvation history and acknowledges liturgically that it was all accomplished
by God the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. The liturgical color for this festival is white.

A Note from Pastor Fred
At One With The Psalmist
'How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty! How I want to be there! I long to be in
the Lord's Temple. With my whole being I sing with joy to the Living God. Even
the sparrows have built a nest. And the swallows have their own home; they keep
their young near your altars, Lord Almighty, my king and God.' Psalm 84 – vs. 1-3
On my front porch there hangs a large splendid fern. I usually hang a basket of
flowers but by midsummer there are mostly past their flowering and I am loath to
spend more money to replace them. So this year it is a fern that I know will last
into the fall.
This decision also seems to please a pair of Redbirds who examined this new
arrival. They started to make a nest on a wreath that hangs on the front door, but
I knew this would never work. So I took what materials they had and placed it on
the front hedge hoping they would take the hint. Sure enough, they did. Day by
day they were in and out of the fern as they prepared for parenthood as I watch
them from the dining room window. Then one day the memory of Psalm 84 came
to mind for a brief moment. In that moment I was at one with the Psalmist, standing
side by side and observing something so creatively beautiful that it evokes heartfelt
thanks.
We are told that the Word of God is forever, that it transcends time. But now and
then it hits your face and grabs hold of your soul and there is nothing one can do
but say thank you.
In Peace,
Pastor Fred

Lutheran Blood Drive July 23, 2017 - 11:30am to 1:00pm
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, local Lutheran Churches, ELCA and Missouri Synod, are sponsoring a blood drive throughout the year, to service the greater Richmond area. Our date to host is July 23, 2017, following the Worship Service. The Blood Mobile will be in the parking lot. For those who have given blood before, you know what an easy procedure it is. I hope that you will be an advocate for those who have thought about it before but have yet to participate. A sign up sheet will be displayed in the Narthex soon. Many thanks, Pastor Fred
CAN YOU LEND A HAND?
We need people for the Property Committee. Can you help us around the church? Duties involve maintaining the inside and outside of the church.
We need assistance all year with things such as: keeping up the inside of the church, lawn work, mulching, mowing, trimming, leaf removal, scheduling repair and maintenance, etc. Please see Tim Hesson, Property Chairperson for more info. Any assistance you can provide would be helpful. Thank you.

Annual Meeting Report
Simeon Austin, President of Council, opened the meeting by declaring a quorum and leading the congregation in the
hymn “All Are Welcome.”
The Reverend Frederick Marcoux, Pastor, opened with prayer.
Sim thanked the congregational ministries and council for their support. Minutes from the 2016 Annual Meeting
were approved. Sim recommended the congregation allow council to approve the minutes from this and future
Annual Meetings at the monthly Council Meeting. A motion was made and approved that the church council
members review and approve the Annual Congregational Meeting minutes following the annual meeting. These
approved minutes will be printed in the annual report to the congregation.
Director of Music, Richard Barnett thanked the congregation for being so warm and supportive. He also asked for
correction in his Annual Report to reflect March 05, 2017, the “Agape” presentation.
Christian Education/Youth Ministry Consultant Jo Blandford thanked Judy Maier for working so closely with St.
Luke youth projects and ministry activities. Jo also expressed appreciation for the dedicated teachers and staff that
support our learning ministries each Sunday and the congregation as a whole.
Council President Report was reviewed. Sim Austin thanked the congregation for a year of many accomplishments
and wonderful events. He reminded the congregation there are some vacancies in our Ministry Leadership. The
church is always in need of more congregational support and input. There is a correction to be noted for the Mutual
Ministry listing in the Annual Report. Lane Witthoefft's name is to be recorded as the Ministry Leader of this
committee. The congregation has been generous with financial support in 2016. He reminded the congregation our
mortgage will be retired in August, 2017, allowing our focus to address major improvements and renovations the
church will need to make in the next 2 - 3 years. Council has been in ongoing discussions of a 5 Year Vision for the
church's ministerial and financial direction including our staff, sound system, parking lot, roof and heating/cooling
systems. These issues will be discussed with the congregation. He expressed thanks to the Council and Committee's
and welcomed new and returning members of council for the exciting year ahead. The congregation was reminded
of the updates to the Church Constitution and Bylaws completed in 2016 with special thanks to Vince and Brenda
Reedinger for their leadership on this project. A motion was made to approve the 2016 Constitution and Bylaws,
was passed by congregational vote and will now be submitted to the Virginia Synod.
Vince Reedinger reviewed the information in the Financial Secretary and Treasurer's Report and the Financial
Stewardship Summary for 2016. Our 2016 budget remained on target and our Outreach Ministries, Special Appeal
and Benevolence givings were generously funded. Thank you also to those who serve as tellers.
Ministry Reports were reviewed. Learning Ministry is chaired by Judy Maier. Adult Forum is facilitated by Vince
Reedinger. All are welcome to attend. Evangelism is chaired by Ann Witthoefft who expressed thanks to Markus
Groener for recording our sermons. Outreach leader Marty Witthoefft thanked the congregation for the help and
contributions in 2016. Pastor Bob Maier invited the congregation to attend an informative luncheon, April 02, 1017,
sponsored by the Stephen Ministry. Brenda Reedinger, Interiors/Memorials Chairperson thanked committee
members and numerous volunteers for the activities and accomplishments this year. Pat Carroll, Mission Endowment
Chair reviewed the submitted report including the $5000.00 contribution from the Dottie Nimal estate in December.
The congregation voted to approve the continued term for Leif Dahl and Pat Carroll.

Sim Austin reviewed the Property Annual Report. Thank you to Mary Dietz for spending hours at the church
coordinating the cleaning and sealing of our floors. Thank you to her family foundation for approving the funding to
complete numerous areas. The church courtyard project and cleanup projects will continue in the spring. The church
needs a coordinator for the Property Committee. Men's Group will sponsor a Celebration Dinner planned for February
24, 2016. All are welcomed to enjoy a fun evening of food and fellowship. Reservation sign up details will follow in
the next weeks. The Women's Ministries report was reviewed as submitted by Millie Olson.
A special fund for “Family Needs” will be established for temporary assistance to any internal families of the
congregation. These circumstances are kept extremely confidential. Monthly contributions can be made as well as
focused donations. It was clarified that this is separate from the Pastor's Discretionary Fund.
Vince Reedinger reviewed the proposed budget. He reviewed some changes such as the Synod Benevolence and Staff
Salaries. A motion was made and seconded to approve the Annual Budget. The budget was approved as submitted.
The Pastor thanked the congregation for their support and closed the meeting with prayer. The congregation
concluded in singing “Now Thank We All Our God.”
Respectfully submitted,

Pentecost signals the dawning of the age of the Holy Spirit.
The fullness of Spirit in God’s people is to empower them for witness to all the nations.
For this reason we are celebrating in two very special ways,
The Day of Pentecost, Sunday, June 4, 2017
The first celebration is to welcome into our midst, a new worker in the church of Jesus Christ, our 2017 Confirmand,
Jade Groener. Jade has grown up at St. Luke and throughout the years has faithfully attended of the Sunday School
program and Confirmation. She serves as an acolyte for worship services and has graced us with her piano talent,
most recently during the May Youth Service. She has also been a willing worker at our “God’s Work, Our Hands”
service project for “Rise Against Hunger” project.
The second reason for celebration on June 4th, is to begin our
“God’s Work, Our Hand’s” project for 2017.
On Pentecost we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives,
inspires, and unites us for witness in the world. As we read in Mark 16:15—”Go into all
the world and tell the Good news to everyone.”
This year we are once again uniting with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger
Now) to make meals for the hungry throughout the world. In order to make the 13,000 meals
we need to raise at least $3,500.00 by September 9th– our work day! As we go into the
world and care for those who do not have their “daily bread” we also tell the wonderful love
and life in Jesus Christ. We are fulfilling Jesus command to go into all the world and tell the
Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone!
Beginning on June 4th and continuing throughout the summer months, we ask you donate to “Rise Against Hunger”
with your donation “ Hunger” on the memo line of your check.
On June 4th we celebrate Jade’s Confirmation and our “Rise Against
Hunger” Kick-Off with a Luncheon & Concert following the 10:00 AM
church service. It’s a Ham & Scalloped Potatoes Lunch with all the trimmings.
Through the Austin Family’s Thrivent Grant, the dinner fixin’s are already purchased.
Rich Barnett & Friends have some great music planned!
All of your $10.00 suggested donation goes directly to “Rise Against Hunger” goal.
You are welcome to donate more or less, as you see fit.
Come join us as we continue the mission given to us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.

Bring your family and friends to Church.
Everyone is most welcome at St. Luke. Please have
them fill out a Visitor Card (located in each pew rack
or from any usher) and return it in the offering plate.
If they would like more information about our church, I will be glad
to answer any questions they might have about St. Luke, including
church membership. They can also speak with a member of our
Evangelism committee or call Tammy in the church office at 272-0486
for more information.
In Peace,
Pastor Fred Marcoux

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the
Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are
used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God
and those who attend Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of”
a special person, anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special
event. More than one person may find a certain date important so
flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to
the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service that
Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or home-
bound members. Please return the container the flowers are in to the
church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship
hall. Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if
you have any questions. Thank you.
The 2017 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
The 2017 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. Two arrangements can be used on each Sunday. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected] or Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.
Do you have something for the next Church Newsletter?
The July 2017 Newsletter Deadline is June 20th. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with May meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. Thank you. 804-272-0486, [email protected]
Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?
Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Crucifers, Ushers, and Assisting Ministers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.
If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux or Vince Reedinger for more information about Worship. Please contact Rich Barnett, our Director of Music for any information about our Music
KITCHEN UPDATE
We are in the process of
cleaning up the kitchen. We
have found items that do not
belong to St. Luke. Could
something be yours?
Please contact Jean or Tammy if you are missing
something.
In the future, please put your name on any item
that you bring to the church for a fellowship
event. We will be happy to call you to remind
you to pick it up.
Thank you.
