Worldwide yourcompetent partner for Sealing Technology
TECHNOLOGY MADE IN GERMANY
Your partner ProPack
ProPack was founded in 1989. Our fundamental vision – which we still follow today
– is to combine high quality raw materials with the best state of the art processing
technology.
Partner-orientated consultancy and the consequent implementation of special
specifications and requirements of our customers, together with constant Quality
Assurance, define - the service package of our company.
Users do not always wish or even need an expensive, complex Sealing Systems.
With the help of newly developed machinery and production processes – as an
important basis – we apply the newest experience from tests and practice. Thereby the
most modern, partly processed, asbestos-free raw materials are employed.
Modern Braiding Machines produce traditional as well as complex, modern packing
braids with a tight bonding technique.
A double, continuously variable velocity adjustment control enables a precise plying
of the braiding fibres and a maximum surface contact of the packing results. Braiding
carriers with optimized tension and reduced friction, concentrate the dynamic of
the braid structure into the centre of the packing. Skillful machine selection enables
braiding with marginal and thus neutral core fibres. Additional run-in lubricants and
special dispersions provide the packing with optimal cross section density and running
features.
Precision braiding and subsequent treatment fulfil the requirements of an even and
parallel surface between the packing rings.
The seal SPC – Statistic-Process Control - is a guarantee for constant quality with
repeatable results, which leads to a higher operating reliability and prolonged
application life expectancy for the user. Packing which bears the SPC Quality Seal is
under a permanent control throughout the whole production process. This has the
advantage that any discrepancy is immediately detected and corrected, whereas any
size errors can be avoided.
The Quality Management System used by ProPack fulfils the demands of DIN EN ISO
9001 and is governed by a yearly inspection through the TÜV Management Service.
Die-formed and pre-cut rings are user friendly solutions and provide at the same time
the best seal result without waste. The assembly is unproblematic and secure. A tool
stock of approximately 2000 die-forms in various sizes enables us to fulfil the demands
of most of the users of pump and valve packing.

Content
EDI Test rig for Pump packing This test rig allows to measure on each installed packing ring:
· Pressure drop on Outer diameter
· Temperature
· Leakage.
In addition energy input and the total leakage on shaft and housing can be
determined. A variable speed control allows to simulate the influence of miscellaneous
and hydrodynamic friction on the seal ability and the running properties. The efficiency
of lantern rings and neck bushes in different positions of the stuffing box can be
examined as well.
One of the largest packing inventories in our industry allows often same day
delivery and offers our curstomers an incredible support during a shut down.
Our stock is continuously monitored and the stock level is adjusted to actual
turnover per product and dimension.

Further applications are found in Mixer, Agitator, Autoclave,
Refiner, Kneader and similar equipment.
Hybrid-Pack®
We differentiate between corner and running track reinforced
Hybrid Packing. In principle a minimum of 2 different yarns are
combined for example with a reinforcing characteristic as found
with Aramid fibers and yarns containing graphite. The latter
improve the heat conductivity. A corner reinforcement makes
sense in axial motion machinery like plunger pumps. A positive
side effect is to minimize the risk of gap extrusion.
Most applications for Hybrid-Pack ® are found at rotating shafts.
Running track reinforcement is preferred over corner reinforce-
ment. The reason for this is the fact that the equal distribution
of reinforcing material over the width of the packing assures a
uniform load on the shaft surface. A side effect of the running
track reinforcement is to stop the dynamic of abrasive particles,
which can be induced by the shaft rotation and to protect a
softer component of the packing.
Install packing with Logo facing to housing side and in
rotating applications with the arrow marking in the
direction of rotation.
Pump packing
Pump packing is used for high shaft speeds. Pump packing contains specially
formulated lubricants to aid equipment start up and ensure packing pliability for a
longer life.

Why are 100 % GORE-GFO® Fibre Packings Unique?
Homogeneous GFO® fibre was specifically developed as a packing yarn with the heat transfer and lubricant components forming an integral fibre. In contrast, conventional packing yarns require these components to be added as a coating during service of the packing.
Excellent Heat Conductivity 100 % GFO® fibre packing is the material with the highest thermal conductivity.Only a high thermal conductive packing like GFO® fibre packing is able to ensure minimum leakage. Especially in high temperature or high speed applications the thermal conductivity is essential. While other materials would harden, dry out or even burn, GFO® fibre packings will run with minimum leakage

Trapez-Pack®
Uniform distribution of compression and resulting sealing forces
This decisive modification of packing geometry substantially
improves lifetime and sealability of a state of the art pump and
valve packing.
Trapez-Pack Advantage
• The braided trapezoid cross section forms into a perfect
square shape during installation
• Even pressure in all directions inside the stuffing box
• No OD leakage due to significantly improved k - factor
• No excessive compression along the shaft therefore reduced
friction and heat generation
• Reduced wear of shaft and packing
• Packing rings do not rotate with the shaft
• Reduced run-in procedure and minimized readjustment
required.
• Optimized efficiency and longer lifetime
Packing bent to a ring. The Square packing profile deforms uncontrolled, Trapez-Pack
places itself evenly around the shaft.
Square Braided Packing Trapez-Pack®
Installed situationConventional Square Packing results in assembled in a bulk next
to the shaft and voids on the stuffingbox housing.
Conventional Packing
Compression distribution: Square Packing overloads the shaft area and has minimal
compression to the stuffingbox housing. The packing runs
hotter and shows leckage along its outer diameter.

Valve Packings
Main usage in Applications with higher pressures.
Used in applications with higher pressure. Valve packing does
not content soluable ingredients like oil and will not become
porous at higher temperatures. The surfaces are of fine braid
texture and will seal even with low compression. The basic
construction is extrusion resistant.
Main application:Armatures, valves, gate valves, door and lid seals, as well as
slow speed applications in mixers and filters.
TA Luft and EN15848 Valve stem packing setsThis sets of packing rings and in some instances intermediate
and bull rings have been checked at renowned institutes for
their ability to work according to TA-Luft (Technische Anleitung
zur Reinhaltung der Luft) and are approved.
The tested leakage rates full fill the VDI-Guidline 2440 with
controlled leakage rates of 1.0 x 10(-4) mbar l/(sm) up to 200 °C
and 1.0 x 10(-2) mbar l/(sm) up to 400 °C (test medium Helium)
and are therefore recommended as high grade sealing systems.
Main application:Valves, Flaps, Gate valves, Fittings
Specifications:• Surface roughness:
shaft: Ra max 0.5 μm, housing Ra max 5 μm
• Gap between shaft/housing or shaft/gland max 0.2 mm
• Precompression after installation: ca 50 MPa for short time
• Min. compression in service: ca 30 MPa
• For pressure above 40 bar and frequently varying temperature
and presure we recommend to use of Live Loading Systems
(see page 20)
TA Luft and ISO 15848 certified packings can also be supplied
on spools. To be TA Luft conform each packing ring must be
precompressed in the stuffing box or a similar device to the
recommended TA Luft ring densities..
Valve Packing should be installed preferential as precompressed rings

Conventional valves may have stuffing box chambers with 7
and more rings. Current knowledge, based on modern packing
material, recommends the use of a maximum of 4-6 packing
rings. The remaining space should be filled for example with a
pressure resistant carbon bushing. These bushings are usually
split in 2 halves to simplify installation. Other materials,
resistant to temperature and pressure, can be used as well. The
idea behind this measure is to equalize the available gland
force between the packing rings.
A reduction from 7 to 5 packing rings can lower the necessary
gland force of a rough packing with a low K value to less than
half. This reduces as well the risk of extrusion of packing
material between gland and stem, and still delivers the same
compression at the bottom ring.
Carbon bushing for reduction of stuffingbox depthCarbon bushing can be used to reduce the gland forces, which
are necessary to compress a packing stack to seal at the
stuffingbox bottom.
The bushing can be supplied split or un-split.

Application specifi c ring setsOur experience proves, that perfectly precompressed ring sets with the
right cutting angle and in a combination of selected packing styles
have in summary an improved sealing characteristic compared to the
individual qualities used solely by themselves.
Improved properties are:• Extrusion resistance, if high pressures have to be sealed and/or
bigger gaps than the normally recommended max of 25 of the
packing size are found.
• Wiper function, if any micro scaling is found on the stem and at
reciprocating movement with control valves
• Blow out safety, when sealing high compressed gases and fumes
• Pliability, with low gland forces as well good reset and adaptability
for example in applications with temperature cycles.

PROLOAD LIVELOADINGSYSTEM for ValvesNew generation encapsulated disc spring system with defi ned compression length
Main application:Valves, Sootblowers
Advantages:• Disc springs slide on an even machined surface rather on a bolt
thread
• Disc springs are encapsulated by outer cylinder against environmen-
tal impact
• Disc springs never get over-compressed
• No torque measuring tools necessary
• Relaxation of the springset by volumeloss of the packing stack will
show on an inspection gap. Simply tighten the nut until the gap
closes
• PROLOAD-LL acts as a prevention against mechanical destruction of
packing
• Extended nut screws on the existing valve bolt and eliminates the
need for new longer bolts
Typical problem:The stack of disc springs is too long for the of the available bolt length.
As a result usually the bolts need to be replaced which is time and cost
consuming.
Solution: The PROLOAD Live Loading System screws on top
of the bolt in a kind of cup form and giving
thereby plenty of extra length to accommodate
the uncompressed disc spring stack. This
incorporates also an equal load of compression
for thermal expansion of the valve or fl ange parts. The springs cannot
be overcompressed as the optimum compression length is set by the
PROLOAD housing dimension. A sideeffect of the system is that the
disc springs slide instead on a thread on a smooth machined surface.
Further they are encapsulated and protected against dirt and
environmental impact.
Functional Description:When the packing or gasket settles in operation the springs maintain
the gland pressure and the sealing force constant. The settling is shown
by a small inspection gap at the bottom of the housing. At a routine
inspection the PROLOAD System is simply torqued down till the gap is
closed. The full load and compensation length of the disc springs is now
available. No torque measuring tools are needed!

FDA conform products are available, example Trapez-Pack TP619 for
Pumps and Mixers (Seite 12), S6 SI (Seite 22) and A19OX for valves
(Seite 14). Quite often solutions are requested, which are suitable for
demanding applications through corner or running track reinforce-
ment increased heat conductivity. Therefore non FDA conform
products have been analysed on their suitability to seal machines of
the food processing industry.
Based on the examination report 1543-08-I dtd 4.2.2008 and 1543-08-II
dtd 23.05.2008 of FABES Forschungs-GmbH in Munich, regarding the
expected extraction content of Perfluoroctan Acid (PFOA) and low
molecular content TNE of fibres and stuffing box packing used in
dynamic and static applications. The expected extraction content is
less than 0.5 μg/kg/day “threshold of regulation” (TOR) and less than
1/10 of the “virtual safe dose” (VSD) 1 μg/kg of foodstuff.
The following mentioned products can be considered as safe, as
defined in FDA US 21 CFR §170.3i . In addition the following menti-
oned products comply with the REGULATION (EC) No 1935/2004 OF

DVS ProInject - 2 Packings Compound System
The Packing Compound System can be used for stuffing boxes of many applications. Due to
the special fibers and the suitable lubricant, the Sealing Compound is of universal use. The
loose compound will be held in place with a top and bottom ring shaped in a special
geometry. Refeeding and compression is applied by a hydraulic feeding unit. The DVS
needs little maintance only and due to its loose structure it doesn`t wear the shaft surface.
The Packing Compound System was developed for the pulp and paper and the chemical
industry and is suitable for the application in mixers, kneaders, refiners and similar
equipment. Due to its excellent pliability the DVS System can also be used on worn shaft
surfaces. Only the top and bottom rings need a precise dimension to seal against. Additio-
nal material can be injected whilst operation of the equipment..Accessories: Hydraulic injection press DVS-TP 9000

Compression distribution in a stuffing boxPrecompressed rings offer the advantage to have the settling
taken place already. In operation that results in a reduced way
of adjustment and all packing rings will seal equally down to
the stuffing box ground. This avoids a lift off effect of the
product side rings through product pressure.

BENEFITSThe sealing performance of ProPack Camflex D8 is in a test with nitrogen
sealing 10 fold better compared to cam profile gaskets and 30 fold better
than spiral wound gaskets.
The exceptionally high operation safety of Camflex is obvious as the risk of
unwinding prone to spiral wound gaskets is totally eliminated. In addition
Camflex can take higher compression than cam profile gaskets.

Mechanical Packing InstallationThe successful installation of mechanical packing is a combination of common sense with easy to follow recommendations
1) Remove all the old packing from the stuffing box.
2) Clean the stuffingbox thoroughly removing all debris and inspect for damage on the sealing surfaces.
3) Check the flush is working and has clean water.
4) Inspect the application and report any concerns to a higher authority (even at a later time) so that it can be logged.
5) Cut the selected packing using a sharp knife with one movement (don’t saw through the packing). Use a proper packing cutting device.
4 5 | ProPack
Types of Cut
Pumps and Mixers (Rotary): A butt cut is recommended, if a skive cut is chosen the ring should be pre-compressed in a die form.
Butt Cut Rings: Cut at approx. 75 degrees. Add extra length in % to circumferential middle line according the chart.
Valves (Static): A skive cut is recommended, exception fraying packing styles which are preferably cut butt.
Skive Cut Rings: Cut at 45 degrees on circumferential middle line and add 2 %.
6) Tamp down each ring of packing with a suitable tool; do not attempt to tamp down
all the rings at once with the gland, as it is not possible. If a ring is a tight cross-
sectional fit, do not tap it with a hammer to reduce its cross-section as this can
damage the fibres. Instead, gently roll it with a round item.
7) Position: Distribute the packing joints symmetrically to eliminate any leak path.
Tighten the gland with the nuts equally.
8) Installation of Valve Packing: Pre-compress the packing for pressures up to 50 bar
(725 psi) with about 2 times (gaseous liquids up to 5 times) the pressure and
a minimum of 5 N/mm2/725 psi) (gaseous 10 N/mm2/1.450 psi)) above 50 bar
(725 psi)) with 1.5 times (gaseous products up to 2 times) the pressure.
Installation of Pump Packing: The applied gland force should ensure that the rings
are seated properly to the stuffingbox and compressed enough to form a seal.
(Step A)
A
Then loosen the nuts to relax the gland compression (Step B)
B
and adjust the nuts only finger tight (Step C),
C
checking where possible so that you can rotate the shaft by hand.
Turn on the flush (if used). Start up the equipment. Leave pump operating for 20
minutes before making any adjustments. Tighten as required by one flat of the nuts
at 10 minute intervals until acceptable leakage is achieved (Step D).
D
Never - Over tighten the gland nuts. If the gland is too tight, the fluid film between shaft and packing can be destroyed and packing life reduced.
Never – Back-off (slacken) the gland nuts under pressure!
Backing-off the gland nuts can allow hydraulic force from the product to push back the packing. Force from the gland follower cannot overcome the hydraulic force,
and the integrity at the base of the stuffing box will be destroyed. The position of the lantern ring may also be affected and this may cut off the flush water flow.
