Introduction

Deaf cinema has made a profound impact on the lives of people around the world. In recognition of excellence in deaf filmmaking, Gallaudet University will hold its first triennial WORLDEAF Cinema Festival, November 4–7, 2009, in Washington, DC USA.

The four day festival will include professional and student film competitions. It will also spotlight the international dimension of deaf cinema and the diversity of the world’s deaf and hard of hearing communities.

The festival also seeks to promote interaction between industry representatives and festival registrants through keynote speakers, panel sessions, film screenings and community forums.

An Invitation from Marlee Matlin

Greetings!

Gallaudet University is proud to host the international WORLDEAF Cinema Festival. As honorary chair of the festival and a member of Gallaudet University’s Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure and honor to extend to you a personal invitation to participate as a sponsor.

Your sponsorship will contribute considerably to this significant milestone in the history of cinema for deaf people. We are offering opportunities for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing filmmakers to meet and share their work. I look forward to your support and meeting you at the festival.

Marlee Matlin

WORLDEAF Cinema FestivalMission Statement

Since the beginning of cinema, deaf people have embraced the communicative and artistic potential of the medium. Film and video have expanded the horizons of deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the world. As computer technology continues to advance and develop, global platforms for cross-cultural visual communication have emerged. Today deaf filmmakers have more distribution options and wider potential audiences than ever before. To spotlight and stimulate the current opportunities in deaf cinema, Gallaudet University is hosting an international festival. This event will celebrate past and present accomplishments in deaf cinema, as well as promote interaction among industry representatives, filmmakers, and registrants.

Festival attendees will have opportunities to view classic and new productions in deaf cinema, attend an awards dinner and WORLDEAF Cinema Awards program, browse industry-related exhibits, and learn about the world of vlogging. A key component of the festival will be question and answer sessions with industry experts and community forums focused on challenges facing deaf filmmakers. The festival will also showcase the work of student filmmakers and encourage their participation.

Sponsorship Opportunities

We invite you to join us and Honorary Chair Marlee Matlin in celebrating international deaf cinema by becoming a festival sponsor. Sponsors will be recognized throughout the conference events and social gatherings in a variety of formats. Most importantly your contribution will provide the WORLDEAF Cinema Festival opportunities to break new ground in the world of cinema.

Your contribution to the WORLDEAF Cinema Festival will also support Gallaudet University’s mission to preserve deaf history and recognize the creative and cultural contributions of deaf people. Sponsorship will also help increase awareness of deaf cinema within the greater film and media industry, and provide international deaf filmmakers with unique professional networking opportunities. In addition, your organization will have access to a special niche audience interested in all realms of film resources, products, and technology. We invite you to join us in making this exciting event a resounding success.
