WorldCat® Discovery Services Release Notes

November 23, 2015

Modified November 17, 2015

Introduction The following release notes are for the November 23rd, 2015 enhancements to WorldCat Discovery Services. This release includes a new choice for the display of availability information on search results and fixes for production issues.

Over the next several months we will continue to expand the availability feature and address other performance issues.

Include Request ID with problem reports When reporting an issue with WorldCat Discovery, it is extremely helpful to include the Request ID. The Request ID is found on the bottom of the screen on which the issue occurred. Including this information allows us to directly trace what happened on the particular request we are troubleshooting.

New Features and Enhancements

Availability libraries can choose a new option on search results We are introducing a new option for libraries that have purchased availability and wish to see the information displayed on search results in WorldCat Discovery. This feature will display availability at the Institution level (Level 1) and does not apply to Group Views (Level 2 and 3). There will now be three options for configuration of the availability feature. Two will show availability on search results and the third option will not display availability on search results. This setting is in OCLC Service Configuration under My WorldCat.org > OPAC Statuses, Locations and Circulation Policies > Item Availability on Search Results (AOB).

Current setting for Availability on Brief Results (On/Off toggle applied to both services):

New (post-release) Availability of Brief Results settings:

Option 1: Automatically (10 results at a time)

This option will show availability where applicable for the entire page of search results, as it works today. If your library has enabled the Availability on Search Results setting already in WorldCat Discovery (or WorldCat Local), this will be your initial state setting in Discovery when the November release is complete. We made this decision because it will not impact the experience for your end users. This option makes the availability call to your local integrated library system at the time the results are collected, one page (10 records) at a time. The screen below shows how the Automatic setting will display. For records with availability and View online links you will see the total count available at your institution, the call number and location information, and a View online button when applicable. There may be cases where your library does not own the item or have links to present, so the list of 10 records may have some citations with these details and others without. This type of display is appropriate.

Option 2: On Demand (1 result at a time)

This is the new option for WorldCat Discovery. It will require user-initiated action to display the availability information for records in the result set, one record at a time. Results still display with 10 records on a page. Users can review the citation information, if they decide they want to know more about an item they can click the Check Availability/Online Access button. The next screen will show Availability and/or View online options where applicable. Since the availability call has not yet been made, there may be cases where the button will appear but your library does not own the title or have availability information to display.

You will need to change (or add) this setting in OCLC Service Configuration if this is the option you wish to choose for your users. The screen below shows this setting will display a new button. Once the button is clicked both availability and View online options will follow if applicable, by item.

Option 3: Do Not Display

Availability information will not appear on the search results page at all with this option. If you have purchased Availability the information will still appear on the side panel when a record is selected from the search results page. If you have purchased Availability and currently have this set to Do Not Display in WorldCat Local, or, you have not enabled the Availability on Search Results setting in WorldCat Discovery, this will be your initial state setting in Discovery when the November release is complete.

Configuration: Availability on Search Results

If your library has purchased Availability, you may configure Availability on Search Results options as described above and below. Go to OCLC Service Configuration under My WorldCat.org > OPAC Statuses, Locations and Circulation Policies > Item Availability on Search Results (AOB).

If you have been using WorldCat Local or WMS, please note there is now a new section for WorldCat Discovery. You will want to review the settings and make a choice for each service. This setting is now independent and can be configured differently in each service.

WorldCat Discovery libraries that purchase Availability and wish to enable Availability on Search Results need to complete the new section choosing which of the 3 options to configure in WorldCat Discovery.

6

Configuration: Availability by Item Type

There is also a section where you can configure the availability options based on item types. Now is an ideal time to review these selections as well. The settings you choose in this section will apply to both WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local. Current WorldCat Local and WMS libraries have likely configured this section previously. WorldCat Discovery libraries that purchase Availability should complete this as part of the process to set up Availability on Search Results.

Bug fixes

Availability count in search results includes all locations for your institution If your library has enabled availability on search results, and you have multiple locations configured to represent your Institution (Level 1), the count shown now includes the total number of copies available across all locations under your Institution (Level 1). An issue was reported where the counts on the search results page only included the first location under your institutions’ level 1 configuration. After the November release the count on the search results page (i.e. 5 of 5 available) will be consistent with the count on the availability display on the side panel.
