THE MARBLE FOOTJust a minute’s walk from the bustling Piazza Venezia, Via di Santo Stefano del Cacco is famous for a large marble foot perched on the side of the street. Clad in a Greek-style sandal, the giant sculpture is thought to have belonged to a colossal statue of the Egyptian goddess Isis whose cult had spread all over the Greco-Roman world after Alexander’s conquest of Egypt.

THE PALATINE HILLFor the Romans the Palatine had always represented the city’s sacred birthplace. The hill, isolated from the others in a position which dominated both the Tiber and the Forum Boarium market, was the site of the legendary founding of Rome and the “square furrow” ploughed by Romulus on 21 April of the year 753 BC.

THE TEMPLE OF VESTAFamous for its circular footprint, this monument was one of the earliest structures located in the Roman Forum. The building contained holy objects including the Palladium, a statue of Pallas Athena which the Romans believed had been rescued by Aeneas from the flames of Troy. Numa Pompilius is believed to have built this temple along with the House of the Vestal Virgins in its original form.

NECROPOLIS OF THE VIA TRIUMPHALISA three-hour itinerary combines the beauty of the Pope’s Gardens with the histories of the burial ground beneath the Vatican Hill. Along the route, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the eccentric Galley Fountain and embark on an unguided tour of the Vatican Museums. Every Monday and Friday.museivaticani.va
