• The pledge promised that Germany would no longer torpedo unarmed merchant vessels, if America would have consequences for Great Britain’s naval crimes in the British Isles

• Germany resumes unrestricted submarine warfare

• They would sink ALL vessels on sight, armed or unarmed

• Zimmerman Telegram intercepted by Great Britain and given to the United States

• In it, Germany promised to give back to Mexico the land it had lost to the United States in the Mexican War

• In order to get the land, Mexico had to promise Germany they would help them during war

• United States receiving telegram was crucial advantage for the Allies

• President Wilson asks Congress for declaration of war

• Senate voted for war on April 4

• House voted for war on April 6

• President Wilson gives his “14 Points”• The Points were Wilson’s goals for a war-

free world• They were designed to create a new world

order• The 14 Points created the League of

Nations, which later turned into and is now known as the United Nations
