WORLD WAR I 1914-1918 PROPAGANDA COLLECTION

A definition for Propaganda is of Information, Ideas or Rumours deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, Nation etc. by an Organization or Movement. At the beginning of the First World War there were no organised agencies in Britain to combat the extensive propaganda of the Germans. Charles Masterman, a Liberal Politician, and close friend of Churchill and Lloyd George, was chosen to set up a new organisation the British War Propaganda Bureau in 1915, whose sole aim was support for Britain through the manipulation of information about the Central Powers, and engage the United States in the War against Germany. Masterman played a crucial role in publicising reports of the Armenian Genocide to strengthen the moral case against the Ottoman Empire. Alongside Wellington House, there was the Neutral Press Committee under G.H. Mair of the Daily Chronicle, the Foreign Office New Department as a source for the foreign press of all British Official Statements. In 1916 the lack of coordination led to the centralisation under the Foreign Office. On Lloyd George taking office as Prime Minister in 1917 there was another reorganisation. Finally the Ministry of Information came into being under Lord Beaverbrook in 1918, who was joined by Arnold Bennett later on that year. This collection was dispersed by the University of Bristol at public Auction in 1991. It was gathered throughout the war, and displays a broad spectrum of the Propaganda Literature from the British Allies point of view. The signature of C.T. Campion appears on many of the pamphlets. The condition for the most part is good. There is some dust staining and in a few items the paper has degraded and become brittle. Very few of the items show handling wear, and have suffered only from the library storage conditions. Propaganda, by its very nature is ephemeral, easily discarded whether from anger or indifference. We are now delighted to be able to offer this collection of 838 items for sale coinciding with the Anniversary of Remembrance of the start of the First World War on 28th of July 1914, ending with the Armistice on the 11th of November 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles signed in the following year.

The price for the collection is £25,000
