World of WiresWhen Professor Fuller, chief technical officer of Rien Incorporated, suddenly goes missing, Fred Stiller, her colleague, begins to investigate. As the investigation spirals into chaos, he discovers that he himselfis part of the simulation he thought he had been hired to design, and Professor Fuller had simply beendeleted by the operators of a computer simulation so powerful that it’s worlds are indistinguishablefrom this one. This new live-cinema performance inspired by the works of Professor Nick Bostrom, RainerWerner Fassbinder, science-fiction writer Daniel F. Galouye, and an armed robbery at a Duane Readedrugstore that Scheib himself experienced is an all-bets-are-off homage to the startling possibility that youmight actually really be ones and zeroes in someone else’s immaculately programmed world— a critique ofboth the genius and the fallibility of computer simulations—in a world which, as Baudrillard suggested, regularly casts the terms of reality into question.

World of Wires opened with one of the most thrillingly witty displays of illusion I've ever seen on a stage or a screen — a gen-uine challenge to one's fixed notion of reality — and then barreled through another 90 minutes of riveting near anarchy. I'mhereby sending a brain transmission out to some Off Broadway/nonprofit Morpheus: Please, reboot this soon. —Scott Brown- New York Magazine

Critical Response to World of WiresFor the interdisciplinary auteur Jay Scheib mixing media is as much a socio-philosophical statement as anaesthetic one. His “World of Wires,” seen this month at the Kitchen in New York, follows the descent of onebrave computer techie into an alternative, digitally simulated universe. Based on a 1973 television series byRainer Werner Fassbinder, “World of Wires” shares the high-tech political paranoia of more recent films like“The Matrix.” It seems to ask, with equal measures of wonder and anxiety (and, thank heaven, a sense ofhumor) that favorite collegiate question “What if the reality we’re living in has been created by somebodyelse?” Mr. Scheib was his own cameraman for this production, trailing his actors and turning them into on-screen simulacra before our eyes. The show pulled off some nifty trompe l’oeil effects. But its most startlingand convincing moments — like the collapse of a wall into the laps of audience members — were not cine-matic but purely theatrical. Ben Brantley — The New York Times

His brand of theater always seems to be ahead of everybody else. Tom Murrin–PAPERMAG

SEVEN SAGES OF THE BAMBOO GROVEConceived by choreographer Yin Mei, The SevenSages of the Bamboo Grove, is a new contempo-rary dance theater performance inspired by Chineseconceptual artist Hong Lei’s photographic journeyinto the dark heart of the Wei Jin Dynasty. HongLei’s photo series, The Seven Sages of the BambooGrove is remarkable in part for its ability to containtwo thousand years of culture in a seamless, frozeninstant. Developed in collaboration with New Yorktheater director and video artist Jay Scheib, thisnew performance is an homage to the vision andcourage of seven scholars who turned their backs

on society and hid themselves away in the depths ofa bamboo forest where through the fire of poetry, drugs, and invention forged the character of classi-cal Chinese culture as we understand it today.

When the most beautiful and famous of them all,the blacksmith, Ji Kang, with the muscled arms, re-fuses to leave the forest for a life in the court, he issentenced to death. At the moment of his execu-tion, he demanded his guqin and played the songthat would be lost: the fabled Guangling San.

The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove–in atime that looks both like now and then–in search ofJi Kang’s forever lost Guangling San.

Mixing multimedia with deadpan-cool (and very sexy) actors, Scheib is forging new ways of seeingdrama. - Time Out New York, “The Best New York Theater Directors,” March 2009

Bellona, Destroyer of Cities“[Untitled Mars] won a 2008 Obie for scenic de-sign, and “Bellona” might also be a contender.Peter Ksander has constructed a vertical, multi-chambered complex (an apartment building? a city?a mind?), creating a sense of ruined lives stackedone on top of the next. The structure’s dingy archi-tecture alternately frames and conceals its feral in-habitants’ erotic, violent actions, which swirl aroundan enigmatic newcomer, Kid… What an engrossingworld Mr. Scheib and his fine ensemble have cre-ated… it doesn’t loosen its grip.”

- The New York Times

“Scheib (who also went sci-fi with 2008’s UntitledMars) has his own immutable laws to ground us:his customarily elegant use of live video, a grimyaesthetic indebted to Cassavetes, and a sprung-rhythm acting style… a passport to a thoroughlyconvincing alternate world–one that seems toweirdly overlay our vision even as we stumble out-side onto the suddenly unfamiliar concrete of farwest 19th Street.”

A House in BaliA House in Bali is a new opera by Evan Ziporyn with libretto by Paul Schick based on a memoir by ColinMcPhee. It traces the roots of the west's century-long infatuation with Bali, through the true story ofthree westerners - composer Colin McPhee, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and artist Walter Spies -during their 1930s sojourn in Bali. This stunning, multi-media spectacle brings together the finest en-sembles of east and west: a 16-piece Balinese gamelan directed by the dynamic Dewa Ketut Alit, theBang on a Can All-Stars, Balinese choreography by the enchanting Kadek Dewi Aryani, wayang shadowpuppets, and high-tech projections converge, pushing all boundaries of theatrical innovation.

UNTITLED MARSUntitled Mars (This Title May Change) premiered atPerformance Space 122 in New York in April 2008and in Europe at the National Theater in Budapestin November 2008. While developing Untitled Marsat MIT, I sought out collaborations with researchscientists, graduate students, and faculty from theAerospace Astronautics and Anthropology Depart-ments. This resulted in relationships with a varietyof space visionaries and space anthropologistsfrom organizations such as MIT, The Mars Society,Space X, and NASA. Using both live and filmed in-terviews with Robert Zubrin, Zahra Kahn, and Hen-rik Hargitai, the resulting production was a partdocumentary, part science fiction performanceabout establishing a society on Mars. With footageshot at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utahand staged re-enactments of Mars simulations, Un-titled Mars became an antic story of what mighthappen should humans actually manage to estab-lish themselves on the Red Planet.

Jay Scheib’s antic play—half lab-rat experiment andhalf sex farce — devolves into an orgy of greed, lust, andinsanity — the over-all effect is one of happy disorien-tation. Michael Schulman - The New Yorker

Using live video feeds and editing software to createthe illusion of walking on the Martian surface, Scheibmasterfully blends high-tech effects with his perform-ers, who wrestle and simulate sex with gusto... thislaid-back orchestrator of multimedia installations sur-rounds himself with strikingly attractive actors and sexytechnology. David Cote - Time Out New York

What a pleasure to encounter an artist like Scheib, with so many ideas and so many means of presentingthem... In a video clip, Dr. Zubrin insists: "We have togo to Mars simply because it's there." If Scheib's lead-ing, we just might go along for the ride. Alexis Soloski- The Village voice

What's to like? The live show, with music composed and per-formed by the seven-piece band World/Inferno FriendshipSociety, was a wholly unexpected thing, a phenomenon. How to describe it? Imagine a cross between the Rocky Hor-ror Picture Show, Cabaret, the Moth, an episode of Biogra-phy and a bruising 1979 gig by The Clash. You can't? Well,I couldn't either until I saw it unfold. It turns out to be a pro-found, thrilling ride through the last century's tragicomic con-fluence of cultural genres. Here, it matters that culture and

entertainment, tragedy and fun, are confused. That's thewhole point. - Melik Kaylan, Forbes

A terrific, loud, rock-and-roll romp replete with a charismaticrendering of the famous German-born actor (Lorre) by front-man Jack Terricloth. It was a courageous and inspired additionto the Spoleto menu.

Für eine Viertelstunde konnte man glauben,

die Oper hieße nicht "Leonore" und nicht

"Fidelio", sondern "Marzelline". Das lag an

der Partitur, aber auch an der Regie von

Jay Scheib, der nicht nur diese Rolle, son-

dern alle Charaktere dieses Werkes so

plastisch ausgeformt hatte, dass Musik-

theater im besten Sinne entstand.

For a quarter of an hour you might believe theopera was titled neither “Leonore” nor “Fidelio,”but “Marzelline.” This falls in part on the scorebut also on the direction of Jay Scheib, who soplastically shaped not only these roles but everyrole in the opera to such a degree that mu-sictheater, in the best sense, emerged.

Parody +/- Ecology

If I could show anything I wanted to show I wouldshow an ecology of the entire world. I would show liv-ing breathing human beings interacting with one an-other and with their environment. A WHOLEECOLOGY OF HUMAN EXISITENCE CUTTINGAGAINST THE GRAIN AND HOLDING TIGHT TO THERAIL, NOT LETTING GO, NOT DYING OUT.

This is a play about a woman who wants to disap-pear into the landscape but settles for an affair. Itdoesn’t help. It makes her feel worse. In a way thisplay is about wanting to feel worse–a motion-por-trait parody of human loves and human emotionsincreasingly diminished.

Four couples demolishing each other in alast ditch effort to save themselves from their pro-foundly irreversible decisions, from their pitiless-ness, from their loneliness, from their despair.

The play that we are performing is not based on anyone film but takes the entire oeuvre of this man’scontribution to the world of ideas and images asmultiple points of departure. Our story rushes offand we chase after it, to Chernobyl, to Three MileIsland, to Tokaimura. We have tried to make aworld in which PEOPLE HAVE TO INTERACT WITHPEOPLE, LAUGH AND MAKE LOVE, HURT EACHOTHER, AND FIGHT WITH PILLOWS.I guess that, either we are ugly people, and we de-serve the world that we live in, or something iswrong in us, and the world in which we live ismerely symptomatic of a deeper anxiety. This placeis a Desert.

THIS PLACE IS A DESERTAbout the play

Inspired by the work of Italian modernist filmmakerMichelangelo Antonioni, and aimed at a generationraised in the language of cinema. The audienceviews this portrait of human love gone increasinglywrong in fragments–through windows, reflected inmirrors, and through partially-drawn curtains. Theaction is projected live onto a wide screen abovethe stage architecture. A lone cinematographermoves through the set providing a live cinema studyof four lovers destroying each other in an attemptto defy their impenetrable loneliness. The goal ofsituating the action within these partial-view roomsis, on one hand, a practical consideration–we use

cameras to see up close, to see around corners, and to mediate our experience of Reality by ampli-fying what can only partially be seen. With the cam-era we differentiate between Real and Realistic andtry to photograph our condition. To paraphrase An-tonioni; either we are ugly people and we deservethe world that we live in, or something is wrong inus, and the world in which we live is merely symp-tomatic of a deeper ugliness. This Place is a Desertis a motion-portrait, a tool for understanding Real-ity–or in any case, this reality–partially seen andpartially screened. +/- Parody.
