Nelson Mandela, turned 94 years old Wednes- day in his home village of Qunu. The celebration with his family will include a birth- day cake and his favorite dish of tripe with samp, or coarsely ground cornmeal. Schoolchildren and celeb- rities sang "Happy Birthday Madiba," as South Africans affectionately call the former leader, using his clan name. Millions of South Africans donated 67 minutes of their time to public service, one minute for each of the years he dedicated his life to ser- vice. Tributes poured in from around the world, while the Internet in South Africa lit up with birthday messages for Mandela, who spent 27 Mandela years m prison under the apart- heid regime and emerged to be- come president in the country's first democratic elections in 1994. Mandela retired from public life in 2004. He spends most of his time in Qunu. With South Africa ever con- cerned about the increasingly frail health ofthe man people simply call "our icon," Mande- la's wife, Graca Machel, reas- sured journalists that he had recovered well from illness. (He was hospitalized earlier this year with an abdominal complaint. Last year it was ru- mored he died after he spent several days in a hospital with a respiratory infection.) President Obama called the act a "barbaric terrorist attack." Israel has vowed a return strike on Iran. By ARON HELLER and VESELIN TOSHKOV The Associated Press SOFL\, Bulgaria Israel vowed to strike back at Iran for a brazen daylight bombing Wednesday that killed at least seven people on a bus full of Is- raeli tourists in Bulgaria. The bombing was the latest in a series of attacks attributed to Iran that have targeted Israelis and Jews overseas and threat- ened to escalate a shadow war between the two archenemies. Iran has denied involvement in the past but did not comment on Wednesday's attack. President Barack Obama termed it a "barbaric terrorist attack" and called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pledge U.S. help in finding the perpetrators. The blast gutted the bus at the airport in the quiet Black Sea resort city of Burgas, nearly 250 miles east ofthe capital, So- fia, where the Israelis had just arrived on a charter flight from Tel Aviv carrying 154 people, in- cluding eight children. Black smoke billowed into the sky from the stricken bus after the bomb e:q:)loded. Young Israe- lis said they were just boarding when the blast ripped through the white vehicle in the airport parking lot. Israeli Foreign Min- ister Avigdor Lieberman said at least seven people were kiUed. "We were at the entrance of the bus, and in a few seconds we heard a huge boom," said Gal Malka, an Israeli teenager who was slightly wounded. The resort town has become a popular travel destination in recent years for Israelis, par- ticularly for recent high school graduates before they are draft- ed for mandatory military ser- vice. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded 30 oth- ers. But suspicion immediately fell upon Iran and its Lebanese proxy, the Hezbollah guerrilla group. JOHANNESBURG — South Africa's beloved first black president. Nelson Mandela, turned 94 years old Wednesday in his home village of Qunu. The celebration with his family will include a birthday cake and his favorite dish of tripe with samp, or coarsely ground cornmeal.

Schoolchildren and celebrities sang "Happy Birthday Madiba," as South Africans affectionately call the former leader, using his clan name. Millions of South Africans donated 67 minutes of their time to public service, one minute for each of the years he dedicated his life to service.

Tributes poured in from around the world, while the Internet in South Africa lit up with birthday messages for Mandela, who spent 27

years m prison under the apartheid regime and emerged to become president in the country's first democratic elections in 1994.

Mandela retired from public life in 2004. He spends most of his time in Qunu.

With South Africa ever concerned about the increasingly frail health ofthe man people simply call "our icon," Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, reassured journalists that he had recovered well from illness. SOFL\, Bulgaria — Israel vowed to strike back at Iran for a brazen daylight bombing Wednesday that killed at least seven people on a bus full of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

The bombing was the latest in a series of attacks attributed to Iran that have targeted Israelis and Jews overseas and threatened to escalate a shadow war between the two archenemies. Iran has denied involvement in the past but did not comment on Wednesday's attack.

President Barack Obama termed it a "barbaric terrorist

attack" and called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pledge U.S. help in finding the perpetrators.

The blast gutted the bus at the airport in the quiet Black Sea resort city of Burgas, nearly 250 miles east ofthe capital, Sofia, where the Israelis had just arrived on a charter flight from Tel Aviv carrying 154 people, including eight children.

Black smoke billowed into the sky from the stricken bus after the bomb e:q:)loded. Young Israelis said they were just boarding when the blast ripped through the white vehicle in the airport parking lot. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said at least seven people were kiUed.

"We were at the entrance of

the bus, and in a few seconds we heard a huge boom," said Gal Malka, an Israeli teenager who was slightly wounded.

The resort town has become a popular travel destination in recent years for Israelis, particularly for recent high school graduates before they are draft

ed for mandatory military service.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded 30 others. But suspicion immediately fell upon Iran and its Lebanese proxy, the Hezbollah guerrilla group.
