World Hunger Definition● Food insecurity is a household-

level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food. Food-insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time.

● Hunger is an individual-level physiological condition that may result from food insecurity.

History of Global Hunger

● Historically, most humans produced food for themselves.

● Eventually, industrialization and globalization allowed major

manufactured food production and global food trade.

● However, wars such as the WWI and WWII severed food distribution

due to destroyed infrastructure and inflation of food prices.

Current World Hunger● Based on the 2017 Global Hunger Index (GHI) released by the International

Food Policy Research Institute, the number of malnutrition and hunger worldwide has declined.

● The amount of people who are undernourished has gone up since 2015 from 777 million to 857 million people in 2016.

● A side of effect of improving Hunger in communities is these communities then begin to suffer from Obesity.

Waste and Hunger● The four dimensions of Food Access:

1. physical availability of food, 2. economic and physical access to food, 3. food utilization, 4. the stability of those other dimensions over time.

● Food Waste happens when there is a lack of education of how to take care of the produce and food insecurity.

● But their are initiatives being placed around the world to help with Hunger and Waste. For example in Houston, Texas the program Brighter Bites has begun to education kids and parents inside of the school on how to lower the waste of food
