WORLD CHRISTIAN B R O A D C A S T I N G
I want to thank you for spending a little time with our Summer Newsletter. Taking the gospel to the world is still the focus of our ministry. It is fitting that we spend this newsletter pay-ing tribute to Maurice Hall, one of our founders, who died on March 8th, three days after his 99th birthday.
Charles and Kathy Caudill and I were blessed to attend the fu-neral and memorial service for Brother Maurice on March 26, 2019. It was truly a celebration of his life. Stories and tributes were given by Maurice’s sons Jim (Sheri) and Ron (Sheryl), his grandson, Jerry Rushford, and several of his friends from the many places of his ministry dur-ing his life.
Stories were told about the spe-cial relationship Maurice and his wife Marie had. Marie preced-ed him in death by seven years, plus one day – March 9, 2012. She was a faithful helpmate and followed Maurice around the world. They truly loved, sup-ported and cared for one anoth-er. Stories of “Swallowing a min-now” when a VBS attendance goal was met, giving chewing gum to young boys who prom-ised to be a preacher and young girls who promised to marry a preacher and many situations where Brother Maurice would always ask those he met, “Where do you go to church”, were told. Vietnam, France, Germany, Italy,
Switzerland, Michigan Christian College, and the churches he served were mentioned. What a celebration of his life!
A memory I will not forget is the day I was able to take him to a visiting exhibit from the Yalta Conference at the Nixon Library. It contained Winston Churchill’s cloak and Brother Maurice’s radio that was used by President Roosevelt to be able to communi-cate back to the White House. Signs through-out the library said, “Don’t even think about taking pictures.” When I told the curator that the radio in the display was Broth-er Maurice’s, he said, “Take all the pictures you want.” As I watched him look at the radio and retell the story of realizing this technology could be used to take the gospel to the entire world, I realized what a signifi-cant moment it was. He wanted to tell his story to everyone that walked up to the display.
Brother Maurice loved his coun-try. He was laid to rest with the love of his life, Marie, in a military cemetery in Riverside, California. The military service closed with his sons Jim and Ron receiving the US flag for their family.
Thank you Brother Maurice for blessing all of us who knew you and all those who have been and will be blessed by your dreams and your work in God’s Kingdom. We long for the day to be reunited with you. - Andy Baker
A book entitled Where He Leads Me I Will Follow, was written about the life of Maurice and Marie Hall. I would love to send to you a copy in apprecia-tion for your great support of our work. Please contact our office if you would like to have a copy.
From the President’s Desk: A Celebration of His Life

The First to DreamHe followed his dream, the Gospel is preached throughout the world, and his vision lives on.
The place was Yalta on the Black Sea. Heads of the world’s superpowers gathered there
in February, 1945—Franklin D. Roosevelt, Win-ston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. During his time in Yalta, U. S. President Roosevelt stayed in touch with Washington through shortwave radio transmission. An Army 2nd Lieutenant, Maurice Hall, was among the soldiers who had set up that shortwave equipment to be shipped to Yalta for the President’s use. As Lieutenant Hall spent days on the short-wave project, he began to wonder: could not that same shortwave technology be used to spread—not war news, but—Good News for everyone on earth? Once he had the dream, nobody could dis-suade him. He spoke of it boldly. Many were intrigued, but the dream seemed so impossi-ble. “Cover the earth”? It seemed like a pipe dream. For 30 years, Maurice and his wife, Marie, kept dreaming. But they stayed busy in a variety of ministry projects: they planted churches in the Philippines, Germany, Italy, France, Vietnam, and Switzerland. In the 1970’s Maurice was an administrator at the newly-formed Michigan Christian College (now Rochester University). Sons filled up their household: Jim, Bill (killed in Vietnam), and Ron.
Finally came the day the Halls had been dream-ing about. In the mid-1970’s Maurice was sur-rounded with other like-minded people who envisioned the possibility of using shortwave technology—that same shortwave technol-ogy that Maurice had used in wartime—to broadcast the gospel around the world. But of course—would it work? Could the resources be found? Who would write the programs? In what languages would they broadcast? Where would a station be built? Who would engineer
the plans for such an un-dertaking? So many ques-tions! The next six years brought highs and lows to World C h r i s t i a n Broadcasting, but Maurice Hall and his likeminded friends determined, with God’s help, that they would not be stopped. In December, 1979, a 28 hec-tare plot of land in Anchor Point, Alaska, was purchased. The mission was to broadcast to places where missionaries could not travel. Preliminary engineering began in 1980, and on July 23, 1983, the new station, KNLS (the “New Life Station”), signed on for the first time. Earliest programs were in Russian and Chinese. English was added later. All of China is covered by this station, as well as all the Pa-cific Rim countries and most of Russia.
The story continues. In 2016 a second station was dedicated in Madagascar, enabling us to add four new languages—Arabic, Spanish, Por-tuguese, and English with an African sound—and thus completely encircle the world with our programming. We have received respons-es from listeners in every country of the world.
For all his remaining years, Maurice worked tirelessly to tell the story and raise funds for broadcasting to every corner of the globe. Fi-nally on March 8, 2019, three days after his 99th birthday, Maurice passed from this life. He followed his dream, the Gospel is preached throughout the world, and his vision lives on.

For almost a century the presence of Dr. Stephen and Mildred Eckstein has been known
and appreciated throughout the Southwest region of the United States. Recognized as a masterful teacher and an intellectual writer, Dr. Eckstein has both chronicled the history of Churches of Christ and influenced its history.
He was born in Dallas, Texas in 1922, but also lived in Kansas and Oklahoma during his early life. After serving honorably during World War II, he was encouraged by Dr. J. D. Bales to attend Harding College. There he studied Greek under Leslie Burke and his life was set on an unrelenting course of learning and teaching the power of God’s word. He became a gifted scholar of Greek and was an extraordinary teacher in his own right.
Next came a master’s degree at Eastern New Mexico University, after which he began a doctoral program at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. It was there that he met Mildred, who became his lifelong friend and partner in teaching bible to truth-seeking students.
Dr. Eckstein was asked to return to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales to serve as director of the Bible Chair. He served in that position for 35 years, from where his writings and teachings influenced the church in so many ways.
He wrote ‘History of the Churches of Christ in Texas’. This was a very important book that traced the church’s development and growth in the Lone Star state. Dr. Eckstein was recognized for his scholarly contributions and honored
by Restoration Quarterly in 2001. He was also honored by The Christian Chronicle in its March, 1969 issue.
Many who had the privilege of learning from this devoted, Godly couple have expressed their amazement and gratitude for the spiritual, academic inspiration they received from the Ecksteins.
Both of these remarkable Christians are still living in Lubbock, Texas. Even though they are both nearing the century mark in age, their intellect and devotion to Christ and His mission is still strong and loud.
The Hall-Perry Legacy Society is honored to include them as members. They have been supporters of World Christian Broadcasting since 1990, even including this ministry in their estate planning. Thank God for the marvelous legacy of devoted teaching His word that Dr. Stephen and Mildred Eckstein have created.

From Brazil: “This reception report is to inform that today, again, I had the great opportunity to listen to your Chinese program here in Northeast of Brazil on the frequency of 11885KHz, via shortwaves on 25 meter/band; and it was a great satisfaction to me!”
