limit the control they have over their bodies, space,
time and lives. The continued rigidity o gender roles
results in a society-wide ailure to support mothers,
particularlywhentheycombinemotherhoodwithpaid
employment. We ail to support caregivers or their
labor, includingbreasteeding labor, anddevalue their
contributions,butatthesametimeweailtosupportthe
employedmothers’ needs ormaternity leave, exible
time, childcare, andwork-place breasteeding support. Thislackosupportresultsinseriousdrainsonwomen’s
time,energy,andresources.Weneedtopromotegender
role expectations or women and men, mothers and
athers,andallworkersthatarerealisticandsupported
bypolicies;weneedworkplacesupportsthatreducethe
rolestrainandconictthatworkingmothersexperience;
weneedaordable,qualitychildcarethatissupportiveo
breasteedingorlocatedinplacesthatmakeitpossible
or employed women to actually breasteed; and we
needlawsthatensuregenderequityinwages,benets,
andsaeworkenvironments.

thereisnoprotectionunlessweapplytheInternational
CodeoMarketingoBreastmilkSubstitutes

moresubtleovertimeandcompaniesnowutilisenew
mediasuchasFacebookorTwittertoenticeevenmore
consumers with health claims such as“ortied with...
DHA,probiotics,etc”whichtranslatesto“betterhealth”.
Peopleneedtoknowthattherearetoolstoprotectthem

difcult.Communications is thekey. It isessentialthat
a multi-level, multi-disciplinary team is ully engaged
in the planning and implementation o the needed
changes, but howdoyouget suchadiversegroup to
makeadecision?Andonceadecisionismade,howdoyouget the rest o the sta to actually adhere to the
proposed changes? Research has shown that creation
oatimewhenolkscanchatandcanbothdiscussthe
way orward and discuss their rustrations speeds the
processalong.Sometimesthisisaseasyasgatheringat
ateabreakorsometimesitisbettertoormalizerounds
onthetopicobreasteeding.Anotherissueisthatsta
maynotasyetbeonboardwiththeneedorexclusive
breasteeding. One handy communication strategy is
topostshortmessagesinthetoilet!Theplacement,o
course,shouldbeappropriatetotheuser,butitshould
be at eye height. The message should be changed at
regular intervals. Another communications approachused at our hospital was a weekly secret question,
concealed in a stued toy. Whomever ound the toy
andcorrectlyansweredthequestionwonasmallprize
orrecognitionatstameeting,andhadtheprivilegeo
decidingthenextweek’sTen-Step-relatedquestion,and
hidingthe toy. Becreative!CommunicationaidsinTen
