WORLD BANK AND HIMSS’ RESOURCE MATCHING PROJECT Creating a Foundation for Collaboration between HIMSS and the World Bank Group

HIMSS World Bank Task Force was organized to assist in the emerging collaboration of the World Bank Group* and HIMSS. With guidance from the World Bank, Task Force members isolated over 100 World Bank-funded projects that have a health IT component. The projects are intended to accomplish healthcare goals in developing countries. The Task Force identified HIMSS’ resources that may be useful for each project. The spreadsheet lists the World Bank project, its goal and size as well as the amount of investment in health IT, and then suggests a primary HIMSS’ resource that can be used to assist in the project with a reference website. It is important to note that due to the World Bank requirements, we did not have granular information on the projects but only the broad goals. We attempted to use this information to identify the appropriate HIMSS’ resource. This project is exploratory and seeks to ascertain areas of synergy between investments by the World Bank in its client countries and HIMSS programs. In brief, the project identified significant correlation between World Bank-funded projects and HIMSS resources. We anticipate that this work will form a basis for further collaboration between HIMSS and the World Bank. In addition, we learned during a HIMSS G7 consultation between HIMSS Corporate Members and the World Bank at HIMSS12, that HIMSS corporate members who are pursuing a global strategy are interested in the findings of this exercise as it may impact strategic plans. We hope it provides guidance for these members. * Background on the World Bank The World Bank Group consists of five agencies that collectively provide services to over 100 developing countries around the world. These five agencies include: · The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD): lends to governments of middle-income and creditworthy low-income countries · The International Development Association (IDA): provides interest-free loans (credits) and grants to governments of the poorest countries. · The International Finance Corporation (IFC): provides loans, equity and technical assistance to stimulate private sector investment in developing countries. · The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA): provides guarantees against losses caused by non-commercial risks to investors in developing countries. · The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID): provides international facilities for conciliation and arbitration of investment disputes. This table represents potential use of HIMSS resources to strengthen projects identified as having a HIT component within the World Bank. It is intended to be used as a reference guide for government agencies and others involved in the World Bank projects listed. LEGEND: Please note that "Total Value" represents World Bank Funding granted to the country. "eHealth Value" represents that portion of the funding that is to be (or was) used for Health IT. Closed Projects: Projects with a closing date that has already passed were left in the analysis in the event that government of record took over the project and is now managing internally (from World Bank-funded to country-funded).
