Workshop aimThe aim of the workshop is to explore how technology transfer activities can be used as a mechanism to help industries to adopt new advanced manufacturing technologies. Practical examples will be presented to illustrate the potential of technology transfer in this area.

Workshop target The workshop will gather technology providers, industry executives, technology transfer officers and policy makers to share experiences and lessons learnt as well as to discuss policy implications at all levels that could help accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies by the European manufacturing industry.

Three days of events dedicated to Advanced Manufacturing

• Day 1 – Success stories in Technology Transfer for Advanced Manufacturing

• Day 2 – A vision for advanced manufacturing • Day 3 – Advanced manufacturing and smart specialisation

These events will be under the umbrella of the European Forum for Science and Industry.

WORKSHOP: structure and contentsThe workshop is structured in the main three sessions, as follows:

SESSION 1: The role and potential of technology transfer to accelerate the adoption of ADMA - 3 success stories

SESSION 2: Adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies by SMEs -3 success stories

SESSION 3: Round Table, which will try to draw some policy conclusions and recommendations

SESSION 1: some questions to addressWhat are the key elements for a successful technology transfer?What management models between public research and industry are the most appropriate for promoting better advanced manufacturing technologies?What are the lessons learnt from successful technology transfer cases studies?

SESSION 2: some questions to address

What are the key factors for a successful technology transfer of advanced manufacturing technologies to SMEs?What are the main potential implications in SMEs from that adoption?What are the main barriers to ADMA adoption by SMEs?

Some key elements to be investigated in the successful storiesType and quality of the research result;Type and quality of the involved consortia and the applied cooperation approaches;Pathway to market;Project management and governance;Industry involvement in R&D;IPR management;Risk capital;Standards and regulations;Market knowledge;Dissemination and marketing strategy.

Workshop BackgroundThe workshop is organised by the Joint Research Centre

(JRC.DDG.03) in close cooperation with:

EFFRA, the European Factories of the Future Research AssociationDG RTD which contributes to the definition and implements R&I

actions and policy under Horizon 2020 in the Key Enabling Technologies (KET) of Advanced Manufacturing Systems

DG ENTR which leads the Task Force on Advanced Manufacturing for Clean Production technologies.

Workshop BackgroundThe workshop is organized in the framework of the initiatives foreseen by the European Task Force on Advanced Manufacturing for Clean Production (SWD(2014) 120 final).

What's understood as Advanced Manufacturing ?

Advanced manufacturing is understood by the Task Force as manufacturing technologies and production processes which have the potential to enable manufacturing industries to improveproductivity (production speed, operating precision, and energy and materials consumption) and/or to improve waste and pollution management in a life-cycle perspective.

Examples of advanced manufacturingSustainable manufacturing technologies, i.e. technologies to increase manufacturing efficiency in the use of energy and materials and drastically reduce emissions (e.g. process control technologies, efficient motor systems, efficient separation technologies, novel sustainable process inputs, product lifecycle management systems);

ICT-enabled intelligent manufacturing, i.e. integrating digital technologies into production processes (e.g. smart factories);

High performance manufacturing, combining flexibility, precision and zero-defect (e.g. high precision machine tools, advanced sensors, 3D printers).

Your contributions for the workshopWe are looking for two kinds of contributions:

-provide a story of a successful technology transfer in the area of advanced manufacturing and be ready to present this success story during the workshop;

- tell us about SME(s) in your network that have adopted advanced manufacturing technologies and would be willing to share their experience during the workshop.

Deadlines

31 October: submission of the success stories

15 November: selection of the most significant 6 success stories in terms of their learning potential
