Changing Face of Science• Small and medium size groups increasing in importance,

with sharing of resources, ideas, people, and data– Long tail of science; network science; international

• Data generation growing, with challenges– Big– Complex– Messy– Standards – too many– Standards – lack of them– Policy– Others

• Many groups all working on /confronting similar challenges– But not talking (as much as would be optimal)– Many reasons: Time, my way or the highway, lack of

knowledge, pressure to produce results

Why GLEON, PRAGMA and NCHC?• PRAGMA: Focused on enabling collaboration among small and medium sized groups – through shared infrastructure

– Scientific expeditions with data at core• GLEON: Grass-roots network of people, data, sensors to

advance understanding of lakes and their role in the (global) environment– Years of experience with data issues (technical and policy)

• NCHC a founding member of both organizations– Lead first buoy installation (networking)– Involved in disaster mitigation and sensing (floodgrid)

• All organizations seek partnerships– Strengthen the organization and reduces re-invention

• All have plans to take output of this workshop– Awards (e.g., DIBBs) or workshops (PRAGMA 24); and SEAIP (NCHC)

Goals of Workshop

• A goal of this workshop is to discuss and identify opportunities to bridge the data landscape to reduce current barriers and enable scientists to more easily traverse the available resources. In particular we hope that this workshop will:– Improve the future effectiveness and efficiency of network science

through improved understanding of current cyber infrastructure and CI initiatives

– Communicate best (promising) practices from organizations that support science data infrastructure

– Identify opportunities for incorporation and re-use of existing CI across related disciplines

– Document and communicate results to a broader community

Agenda – 50,000 foot view• Tuesday– Understand GLEON and PRAGMA organizations– Present case studies in three application areas– Share information about projects, solutions and problems

• Wednesday and Thursday– Travel back and forth to Huisun Forest Station– Discuss common problems and solutions– Prioritize issues we will address– Formulate some prototype projects and future activities– Outline and draft report

• All days: Enjoy company, food, interactions
