In the last verbinder issue of the year, we once again turn our attention to Marketing … We do marketing. Online, at trade fairs and events and in brand communication. Naturally, the question re-peatedly arises: what is good marketing? More basically, what is good? And what is bad? It isn’t about being ‘appealing’ or ‘not appealing’. It is about having a ‘golden thread’, adhering to the binder Corporate Identity (CI), setting ourselves apart from the competition, polarising, provoking people to embrace – or reject – us, and continuing to evolve. The verbinder, for ex-ample, has developed into a premium customer magazine.

It is our job to ensure that our exhibition stand in China is just like the one in France, our brochures in the USA look like those in the Netherlands, and the binder China website corresponds to that of binder Austria. Our most important task is to give the binder brand presence a unified appearance and to consistently pres-ent the binder logo, both externally and internally, in ac-cordance with the binder CI. In short, we are responsible for upholding and drawing attention to the binder logo.

On that note, we wish you inspiring reading!Marketing

What a year!

Page 3Editorial

Dear readers,

Hurricanes ravaged Florida and the Car-ibbean, a massive earthquake rocked Mexico City and Donald Trump was sworn in as president of the USA. Here in Germany, we had to bid farewell to Roman Herzog and Helmut Kohl, and we watched Air Berlin’s slide into bank-ruptcy and the consequences of the national parliamentary elections with equal amazement … what a year! And at binder? Here, too, we can say: ‘What a year!’ Unlike the often so-bering news from around the world, however, our current situation is noth-ing but positive. This has been a stand-out year for our company. Never have we had so many incoming orders, and

never have our sales been so high. In short, we have never been as successful as in the last twelve months. We have also made a strong start on our new construction project, as you all can see. This has been, and remains, possible only with your commitment and moti-vation, for which you have my sincere thanks. In this issue we present impressions from our trade fairs in November, pose interesting questions to Alfred Schrau-dolf about his new position, and report on our subsidiaries in England and Sin-gapore. Additionally, we continue our reading series by introducing another long-time binder distributor, and we bring you up to date on various mat-ters, with articles on such topics as patents, hazardous materials and cable printing.

Warm regards,

WE ARE BINDER.

Page 6: Workshop in Füssen - binder-connector.de · Roman Herzog and Helmut Kohl, and we watched Air Berlin’s slide into bank-ruptcy and the consequences of the national parliamentary

At the invitation of Wer-ner Fröhlich, the Sales team from binder head-quarters attended a two-day event at nestor

Hotel in Neckarsulm with Catherine Mitchell (binder France), Wilfried Snelting (binder Netherlands), Da-vid Philipps (binder UK), Joe Amato (binder USA), Peter Sedström (binder Sweden), Martin Grabler (binder Aus-tria) and Achim Klett (binder SEA).

A record yearIn his welcome speech, Markus Bind-er came straight to the point: ‘We have completely exceeded our expec-tations for 2017,’ he said, adding that everyone should be very pleased that record sales and exceptionally good figures had made 2017 a record year for binder. The new Plant 2 building, on which construction has already started, is laying the foundations for further growth in Neckarsulm. The General Manager also explained the

programme and praised the idea of combining the sales meeting with a visit to the trade fair.

In his presentation, Werner Fröh-lich went into detail about the suc-cessful figures achieved in 2017 and expressed his optimism regarding 2018: ‘Of course, no one knows ex-actly what will happen, but I am very confident that we will increase our sales revenue again.’ The sales man-ager is hopeful that new products and good relationships with existing customers, combined with improved communications about prices and delivery times, will reap results. In addition, there are plans for regular visits to subsidiaries to enhance com-munication within the Group.

and medical connectors, while Jana Wagner focused on the power and miniature sectors. Guido Werner spoke about new M5 and M8 prod-ucts, and Klaus Rechkemmer talked about the M12 sensor, before Sascha Döbel presented the M12X and MSD/LED categories. Dieter Sandula rounded off the product managers’ presentations with his product road map. Afterwards, Timo Pulkowski reviewed the year from a marketing perspective.

Before the lunch break, the meeting looked at the questionnaire. This was based on input from the sales and management meeting workshops in May, when the participants drew up a wish list along with objectives and questions for the management team. The meeting discussed the questionnaire constructively item by item, and worked on making further

improvements to the two-way collab-oration between Sales and manage-ment. For Markus Binder, this is the decisive point: ‘If we want to meet our own high standards and those of our customers, we need to be con-stantly prepared to work on ourselves so that we can make better use of our own potential.’

Dinner at the Por Fin restaurant in Abstatt was an enjoyable event and gave the Sales team another opportu-nity to appreciate the Binder family’s knack for choosing excellent food.

Trade fairThe highlight the following day was a group visit to SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg, the leading trade fair for automation. The binder stand was a clear focus, setting standards with its clear, simple lines and timeless

design. Good conversations with cus-tomers and interested visitors and, above all, the warm atmosphere with-in the binder team brought the sales meeting to a successful conclusion.

Short paths, a lot of

cooperation and a bit

of patience

After many years as a product manager, now a member of the binder management board: Alfred Schraudolf.

He is well past his first 100 days. Since August 2017,

Alfred Schraudolf has been a member of the management

board and responsible for Production and Logistics. The verbinder editorial team asks him how he feels in his new position, what plans he has and why it is attractive to

work in a family company.

With our great staff, excellent products and an

open family in charge,

I see my task as manageable.

Page 9News

You have been working as a product manager for binder for 29 years. Now you’ve been appointed to the management board. What does that feel like?Definitely very positive, even though I was a bit sceptical to start with. The move came as such a surprise and yet I had a good feeling about it right from the start. 29 years in prod-uct management, focused entirely on the product and the customer, and now, at a stroke, the boss of over 500 people. Added to that there’s the re-sponsibility to further develop the Production and Logistics area – it’s quite a dramatic difference and a big challenge, but one that I’m happy to take on. With our great staff, excellent products and modern production fa-cilities, and an open family in charge, I see my task as manageable.

What projects are coming up in ‘your’ Production and Logistics area? What needs to be implement-ed quickly? At the moment, the satisfyingly high order volumes and record sales are placing demands on us. Without the dedication of our staff, it wouldn’t be manageable. Our aim must be to maintain these high standards, and even to increase them, since we are expecting a further, albeit somewhat smaller, increase in 2018. Major projects in this area are Robi 6 and another corrugated washer ma-chine as well as a new wire process-ing machine from Komax. Optimising existing machines and processes is also important. The transfer of the pallet store from Plant 2 to Plant 3 is already underway, as is the transfer of the cable store from Plant 3 to the new facilities at Im Klauenfuß 31. An addi-tional production line for M8/M12 in-jection-moulded connectors at b-ca is

about to go live. Interesting, particu-larly from a strategic point of view, is the project for producing plastic parts at binder USA, which is already far advanced. A major challenge, of course, for all of us is the new Production and Logistics building planned for spring 2018. This is the biggest investment in the company’s history and the various construction phases will take years.

What strategy are you pursuing in the long term?In order to meet our corporate ob-jectives, we need to keep evolving and facing up to the demands from the market. A key factor in achieving this is our staff. We will be focusing increasingly on supporting and de-veloping them and placing them even more firmly in the centre of everything we do. Another strategically important point is the integration of our associ-ated companies. Growth and success would almost certainly not have been possible in recent years without them. A closer integration of workflows and processes, while retaining inde-pendence, will enable us to continue achieving our objectives. We will also be looking at the issues of digitisation in Production and Logistics – Industry 4.0 or the Internet of Things.

What is the attraction for you of working in a family firm like binder and what tips do you have for young people looking for a career? An important point for me is that in a family firm you are still seen as a person, an individual. Short deci-sion-making paths are another im-portant aspect. Projects and invest-ments are often decided on quickly without having to spend months

passing through every single part of the organisation. Another thing I like is the ability to see the bigger picture, which means you can gain experi-ence in other areas. For a career in a family firm, it is important to be able to integrate yourself and to see cooperation as a key factor. It’s also vital to know that you may need a bit of patience to get that promotion ...

The field of customer-spe-cific solutions, which is growing vigorously and requires intensive coordi-nation, is dependent on

the networking and communication among the areas of Sales, Devel-opment, Production and Logistics across the entire Group. To give all of the participants in all locations a platform for communicating and to discuss both positive developments and problems, representatives from various locations were invited and took part in preparing the various main subject areas for discussion.

StrategyThe Sales area provides a communi-cations pipeline to customers and the executing divisions within the compa-ny. As they discussed ideas, deficits

in the familiar processes were specified. Appropri-

Contextual frameworkFrom the Füssen location, Michael Schroers and Matthias Simbürger work for the Group in a central func-tion of this business area, so they offered to hold the event at MPE-Gar-ry. Due to the kind support of Jörn Bargholz and his employees, the event was a complete success.

Current projectsThe area of customer-specific solu-tions, which are executed across several locations, is among the most actively growing areas in the Group. The ongoing networking and digiti-sation of the locations is making im-plementation much easier. Both con-tinuing and future projects require intensive consultation and coordina-tion. To extend this area even further, and in terms of customers as well, ar-rangements have already been made for expanding the team in Füssen.

ate solutions for improving the proce-dures were worked out in groups. This resulted in greater understanding among the individuals in connection with complex subject matter and sup-ports the continued improvement in customer orientation.

Together, participants compared the objectives that binder has set for further growth in the area of

customer-specific solutions with the current situation, and further nec-

essary measures were agreed upon. Each location and each participating employee is an important link in the chain that leads to success. For this reason, information and the partici-pation of colleagues is fundamental

to success.

READING SERIES

Connecting with expertiseIn this issue, we continue our series on ‘Distributors – a key success factor’

With nearly 50 years of experience and ex-pertise in connector technology, EVG is in demand as a distributor of connectors by market-leading manufacturers for automation technology, industrial elec-

tronics, medical technology and machine tool constructi-on, and not only in Germany. True to the motto of com-pany founders Jörg R. Martens and Friedrich Hamacher, ‘We have to know what we sell down to the tiniest detail’, characteristic expertise and competent advice are among the core brand values of the company. This is ensured by the 150 employees as well as advanced materials manage-ment and production technology organised over a facility space of 12,000 m2. Under managing partners Axel Ha-macher and Dirk Martens-Ritz, in the second generation of company management, EVG has now developed more areas of expertise. Beyond the classic distribution and components business, the range of services has been ex-tended to include customer-specific assembly, moulding, mechanical processing and ready-to-install assemblies of connectors and cable harnesses. ‘Based on our motto “… more than just connections”, we offer our customers

tailor-made connector solutions that are adapted to their individual, specific application conditions. Our focus here is the assembly of binder connectors and cables. In ad-dition, we produce cable harnesses, set up consignment warehousing and use the kanban system for delivery,’ ex-plains Axel Hamacher.

A large selectionThe classic distribution business is based on a large inven-tory and a wide variety of connectors and components, with which the expert in connector technology ensures the greatest availability and reliable supply for all lot si-zes. In addition, setting up the EVG online shop created another distribution channel. For its own product lines and to customise standard products, the company has advanced machinery, automatons and injection moulding machines in addition to its own toolmaking capacity. This enables EVG, in cooperation with its customers, to manu-facture special items that meet specific needs – from pro-totyping to series production – even for smaller quantities and at moderate tooling costs. The company, which has been using a quality management system audited by ISO

since 1995 and is certified according to DIN ISO 9001:2015, guarantees high production quality, without exception.

Side by side with the applicationSince 1971, quality products by binder have re-presented a central pillar of the EVG pro-duct range. In cooperation with bin-der, many diverse solutions have already been developed for users. For example, these include the optimisation of a binder M12 line so that it meets the higher requirements of agricultural machinery. The actuator/sen-sor connectors and cables by binder are suitable for use with high-pressure cleaning systems. ‘However, there was a weak spot on the second side of the M12 line because with the Superseal connector, the cable wires were always exposed a bit there,’ says Jörg Thomas, a binder field employee. The solution suggested by EVG, moulding the Superseal connector with TPU, was implemented successfully wit-hin a short period. Now the entire line is more suitable for use in industry and the solution prevents accidental bre-

akage during transport or when using the high-pressure cleaning system. This way, binder and EVG are providing a sophisticated product that precisely meets the needs of their customers.

Close to the customerEVG gets many ideas for innovations

and detail improvements in connec-tor technology from its customers.

‘It is important to us to be in di-rect contact with customers. For this reason, we have many employees in the field for a company of our size,’ exp-lains Dirk Martens-Ritz. Ten employees with many years of sales experience provide

consultation for customers on-site. They provide support for

product selection and for adapting connector technology to specific re-

quirements as well as design-in at the customer’s site. Proficient internal sales em-

ployees provide information about the entire range of services, which includes not only connector techno-logy, but also switches, housings and industrial climate control.

As managing partners, Axel Hamacher (left) and

Dirk Martens-Ritz build upon the tradition of the

founders of EVG and, moreover, they have devel-

oped new business areas.

‘With our own toolmaking capacity, we can react with flexibility

and coordinate the optimum, customised connector

solutions together with the customer,’ explains

Axel Hamacher.

It was not initially clear whether we could meet this request using the existing cable-printing systems (hardware and software) in Plant 3. The Industrial Engineering department had also received some additional requirements:

• More logos and markings on the cable• Symbols for cable markers and the resulting extended

text lengths for printing• Barcode printing on the cable

The first step was therefore to check whether the exist-ing equipment was adequate or whether we needed to consider replacing the entire printing systems.

New generationWe realised fairly quickly that the outdated printers and, in particular, their software, were no longer capa-ble of meeting all the requirements for labelling cables and wires. This led to a decision to invest in a new gen-eration and switch manufacturers for cable and wire printers, for the following reasons:

Harmonisation of the print systems in production

Greater flexibility – print systems can be used in a variety of ways

Future-proofing

New printing system

Once the decision was taken and the investment was ap-proved, we were in a position to place an order for the necessary equipment, the appropriate software and the 18 new printers. Then we started planning the changeover, the installation of the new printer software and the modi-fications to the SAP print data.

Fast implementationThe new system was installed and tested on a pilot setup before the actual production switchover in Plant 3. In test runs, the hardware and software switchover resulted in some minor problems, which were quickly resolved, and all production lines and workplaces were upgraded to the new generation. Thanks to the excellent teamwork of all internal and external parties, it was possible to success-fully convert all nine facilities (18 printers and the rele-vant software) in just two weeks – without stopping pro-duction. binder is now well equipped for cable printing in the future in Plant 3.

Property rights ...... a dry subject, right? But dealing with it at a

deeper level reveals an exciting and, above all, important area – here is an overview.

TEXT Michael Finke

The understandable desire to protect the inventions we create from imitation has been around for a long time. We want to protect these innovations and, based on our prerogative, earn money with them. In-vention has always involved things from our every-

day lives that someone can produce better or less expensively than someone else. Current patent law is based on this desire. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) has existed for 140 years – a long time. The property rights introduced in the following are those that matter with regard to most of the patent applications made by binder.

Page 30: Workshop in Füssen - binder-connector.de · Roman Herzog and Helmut Kohl, and we watched Air Berlin’s slide into bank-ruptcy and the consequences of the national parliamentary

The most well-known commercial property right is the patent. It has to do with technical inventions that are novel, involve an inventive step and are commercially ap-plicable. A patent can protect both the product and the technical process and is only granted after verification by the patent office. The patent holder receives the exclusive right of use for the duration of 20 years, which provides extensive protection. Afterwards, the invention becomes state-of-the-art and anyone can use it. In this way, a patent does not slow technical progress, but instead simply gives the investor the chance to benefit from it for a specified period of time. If a company could not make a profit from its inventions, investments in new development would not be possible. This is how patents and property rights in general support technical advances.

Patent

A utility model is often called a ‘little patent’. But there are actually a few differences: For example, the protec-tion period is ten years and it is not possible to protect a process in this way. In contrast to a patent, the require-ments for protection are not evaluated in the application procedure, just the formal requirements. As a result, reg-istration is quick. The comprehensive protection goes into effect with the registration. The granting of this property right does not ensure that the utility model would actually pass a substantive review. Patents and utility models are often submitted for application at the same time in order to guarantee protection between the publication and the issuance of the patent.

Years ago it was important, as it still is today, for buyers to be able to identify the manufacturer of the product. This has developed into trademark law. A customer has specific expectations of both products and services that have to do with the products. In addition to the identity of the registered trademark and the recognition value, the trademark owner receives extensive rights of prohibition in order to take action against any possible property rights infringements. In an extreme case, this can ultimately re-sult in the destruction of counterfeit items. The interna-tional trademark ‘binder’ is currently protected in the EU, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Russia, the USA and in vari-ous countries in Asia.

Page 31Technology

From idea to property rightsEverything always starts with an idea. Most often, ide-as arise when someone is not satisfied with the current solution. They think they can do it better, less expensive-ly, faster or with higher quality. Everyone has had such thoughts from time to time and new ideas can be generated anywhere and at any time. But how does a property right come about from the idea? Following the initial elation, the idea must be objectively tested to see if the patent re-quirements are even present. Is the technical idea new or does something similar exist already? What does this new solution accomplish – in technical and economic terms? In practice, the technical idea is evaluated with respect to the criteria of ‘novelty’, ‘the involvement of an inventive step’, and ‘commercial applicability’. Patent research is performed to assess whether or not similar solutions al-

ready exist and, if so, which patent claims have already been protected. Finally, the patent claims are analysed and evaluated, including whether or not the degree of in-vention is sufficient enough for a patent to be issued. If the idea is commercially applicable, a company will only claim and register the patent if it is also connected with economic benefit or a competitive advantage. According to patent law, after a specified period a publication of the patent application is printed by the patent office. This allows other inventors/entrepreneurs the opportunity to raise possible objections. binder also regularly researches publications to see if their own property rights have been violated. If the application meets the prescribed require-ments, the DPMA grants a patent. This process can some-times take years.

The objective of this directive is to prohibit problematic components in electronic scrap. Among other ac-tions, this includes replacing the leaded sol-

dering in electronic components with lead-free soldering, prohibiting environmentally harmful flame retardants in cable insulation, and supporting the introduction of appropriate replacement products that are as close to the same quality as possible. Furthermore, the electrical construction elements and components used must them-selves be free of problematic substances. Companies that

import the respective devices or sell them within the EU are directly

affected by the directives because they are required to comply with the regulations.

Substances and limit valuesSome of the substances used in electronic technology are hazardous to the environment. For one thing, they are toxic in specific amounts; in addition, removing them from the environment is either difficult or impossible. The purpose of the RoHS Directive is to minimise the introduc-tion of these substances into the environment.

RoHSRoH… what?

The ‘Restriction of Hazardous Substances’, abbreviated as RoHS, is an EU directive (2011/65/EU) that limits the use of specific

hazardous substances in electrical and electronic devices. This affects binder as well.

Inspection device

IMPORTANT TOOL

X-ray fluorescence analysis is a non- destructive, cost-effective and quick alternative to burn testing or chemical inspection proce-

dures or other methods of analysis.

There are two ways to verify conformity with RoHS. These are specified in standards:

DIN EN 62321 – Chemical analysis In a chemical analysis, the concentration of the respec-tive elements or combinations is determined in advance (screening) – for example, by using a visual procedure such as X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). According to this standard, the results of the test analysis are permit-ted as documentation according to DIN EN 50581 in order to verify the conformity of components and assemblies.

DIN EN 50581 – Technical documentationThe harmonised standard DIN EN 50581 specifies how manufacturers of electronic devices must provide verifi-cation by way of appropriate documentation. Based on the reliability of suppliers and the likelihood that cer-tain components or materials will violate the specifica-tions of RoHS, the manufacturer determines which kind of documents are necessary.

Verification of conformity with RoHS

Quality managementIn order to manufacture and sell binder products in con-formity with RoHS, Quality Management decided to pro-cure a device for RoHS testing, which is used in the QA department in receiving to approve individual elements during the course of the receiving inspection. Parts to be inspected include plastic items, circuit boards, contacts, single wires and parts for further processing, among oth-ers. The results of the individual inspections are stored in SAP in the respective part inspection lot so that RoHS conformity can be verified at all times, e.g. if a customer submits a complaint or request. Three employees in the

QA department in receiving were trained by the manufac-turer to use the device and received additional instruc-tion by a radiation protection representative of the binder company with regard to the correct use of radiation pro-tection devices.

2017 trainee and student event

Great experiences with plenty of fun and action. The 59 participants in the second binder trainee and

student event in Hungary were offered an exciting programme with a focus on team building.

TEXT Patrick Heckler

From 12 to 14 October, participants from Neck-arsulm (binder), Füssen (MPE Garry) and Grenchen (Switzerland, binder precision parts) met for the second trainee and student event at the binder cable assemblies (b-ca) plant in

Jánossomorja, Hungary. After the individual travel groups arrived at their hotel, they were greeted in the evening by János Vida (Plant Manager, b-ca) and Anikó Kaszás (Head of Personnel, b-ca), both of whom showed their enthusi-asm about hosting the event. ‘We are very pleased to be able to welcome you to Hungary and show you our com-pany and our culture,’ said Anikó Kaszás with pride. The welcoming addresses were followed by a delicious buffet to round out the evening.

Many highlightsThe next day was packed full of agenda items. After break-fast, a drive to the plant and a company presentation, the participants were given a tour of the company that includ-ed interesting insights into toolmaking, production and the warehouse. The activity then moved outdoors for the ceremonial planting of a tree to commemorate this special

event. Along with the binder retiree community, Markus Binder also once planted a memorial tree here. In the af-ternoon, the focus was on fun as some trainees and in-structors went head to head at laser tag while others took a Segway tour in brilliant sunshine – all before bringing a successful day to an enjoyable end at a relaxed evening barbecue. As a gift, all of the participants received a Hungarian invention from 1974: the Rubik’s Cube. That evening, a true master of the Rubik’s Cube made an ap-pearance, presenting helpful tips and tricks which were put to use by a good number of ‘puzzlers’ on their trip home the next morning.

SummaryThe event was seen as a success by trainees, students and instructors alike. It promoted cross-company communica-tion while also serving to integrate the new trainees and students into the Group. Not least, it under-scored binder’s value as an attractive centre for job training.

‘We are binder’ is being lived out!

‘We are pleased to be able to show you our company and our culture.’

Brexit and new directionsA year after the referendum, the UK’s

decision to leave the European Union still leaves some unanswered questions.

Plus: what’s new at binder UK?

TEXT David Phillips

Page 43Global

Brexit – one year on

Economic impact It’s been 15 months since the UK voted in favour of Brexit, and six months since Article 50 was triggered. This started a two-year process, after which the UK will officially turn its back on the European Union. So far, nothing substan-tial has occurred to define future relationships in terms of Brexit’s impacts on travel, trade, employment and pro-tection of citizen’s rights. However, the forecasts of dis-astrous economic impacts now need to be substantiated. Gross national product (GNP) in US dollars was initially devalued by 16 per cent, but then partially recovered – although it is still clearly below historic levels: in euros, the UK’s GNP is currently 18 per cent lower than in 2016.

Status quo The weak GNP is a two-edged sword: on the one hand, it makes imported products more expensive and causes in-

flation. On the other, products made in the UK are cheaper to export, which added 1.8 per cent to GNP in 2016. A sim-ilar forecast is expected for 2017. One benefit of Brexit is the freedom to negotiate outside the EU, but this is offset by potential customs duties that will have to be negotiat-ed with the EU. The UK’s electronics sector is doing well. The two British industry associations that binder UK be-longs to, ECSN and ITSA, have reported strong growth for 2017. However, this means that many companies are still being cautious and operating with a short-term focus.

The future The next 18 months of Brexit negotiations will determine the future of the UK. Uncertainty is the only certainty at the moment. But, whatever the outcome, there is definite-ly a UK market for binder connectors and we are very well prepared to respond to challenges and opportunities.

Expanding options

New distribution partnerAt the moment, we are benefiting from favourable mar-ket conditions and the fruition of the plans we initiated last year. In mid-2016 we launched a one-year sales and marketing campaign. We are working with Motion29, an automation specialist. Through intensive marketing, exhibitions, leading articles, PR and advertising, we succeeded in generating growth of 15 per cent for M8 and M12 products. This year, we have also added a new large-scale distribution partner: as the largest independent distributor of electronic components in the UK, Anglia Components will open up new markets for us and increase

New colleagueWith fantastic support and lead-ership from the headquarters in Neckarsulm, our marketing activities cover the binder brand and products, and we were able to present both at five trade fairs. In addition, we have appointed a new PR partner, who offers a strong market presence for binder and its products. Our products and press re-leases have generated a good response, with support from digital advertising and print media. Sales growth has led to the recruitment of a new staff member at binder UK – we are delighted that Stephanie Halke recently joined our Customer Service team.

New vehiclebinder UK recently acquired its first electric vehicle (BMW 530e iPerformance) and its own charging station. CO2 emissions are just 46 g/km and fuel consumption is just 2.0 litres per 100 km. Even if the car doesn’t achieve this level of efficiency, binder will still benefit from reduced

fuel consumption and vehicle tax. The electric power lasts for only 46 km, but is ideal for

short trips and commuting. The electric motor is combined with a 2.0 litre pet-

rol engine. The charging time is 2.5 hours. Brake energy regeneration makes it possible to charge the batteries from the petrol engine while driving on longer journeys. The British government encour-ages investments in environmen-

tally friendly ultra-low-emission vehicles and associated equipment

through tax incentives and generous subsidies.

Page 45: Workshop in Füssen - binder-connector.de · Roman Herzog and Helmut Kohl, and we watched Air Berlin’s slide into bank-ruptcy and the consequences of the national parliamentary

Page 45Global

The event was part of a se-ries of trainings designed to improve or deepen product knowledge among the sales personnel of nu-

merous distributors in the binder SEA area of responsibility. The par-ticipants included employees of the companies KTM and Willtec of South Korea as well as AddCom and PAN-M

of Singapore, Lintronix of Taiwan, Pt. Gunadaya Solutech of Indonesia, Sen-tric Controls of Malaysia and Cerebral Innovations of the Philippines.

Expanding the distributor networkThe area of responsibility of binder SEA takes in India, the Middle East, South East Asia and the Asia-Pacif-ic region (APAC), including Taiwan,

South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Because the size of this territory makes direct oversight impossible, the support of reliable regionally based sales partners plays a key role. In addition to specialised professional knowledge of the prod-uct portfolio, successful sales work requires familiarity with local mar-ket conditions and ways of thinking. Against this background, the distrib-utor network in South Korea is being expanded and, via existing distribu-tors in Singapore and Taiwan, mar-ket cultivation intensified. The recent training was preceded by local train-ings for Vietnamese distributors in Hanoi and Saigon.

Product training at binder SEAbinder is seeking to sustainably expand its market presence in

the Asian region. Accordingly, product training was conducted in September and October at binder South East Asia (Singapore), including an integrated

workshop for distributors from Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and Bangladesh.

intrObest, like binder ems, has been an expert in the manufacture and assembly of electronic components and systems for over 20 years. Through the close co-operation of both companies, existing

competencies should be strengthened, the present portfolio of offerings expanded and first synergy effects utilized in order to meet the growing challenges of the market.

First stepsIn the initial weeks and months, the collab-oration between the heads of operations and production – Thomas Lacker and Srecko Krznaric on the intrObest side and Michael Petz of binder ems – were in the foreground, along with the reciprocal visits of the pur-

chasing departments. In addition, Martin Schärtl was named Quality Management Of-ficer for both companies.

The Neckarsulm visit was the first large meet-ing of all of the Fellbach and Vohburg em-ployees. The basic idea: to connect the staff outings of the two companies through a work-shop as an opportunity to better get to know binder. It was very positively received by the new colleagues in Neckarsulm, who support-ed it accordingly. Following the arrival and a greeting by Werner Fröhlich and Siegbert Vollert, the agenda called for an extensive company tour. The afternoon workshop was followed by an informal get-together that pro-vided an opportunity for many conversations.

Relaxed atmosphereAfter a great day in a casual atmosphere, all of the participants were left with one impres-sion above all: binder is what it professes to be – a family company. Many thanks to the works council headed by Cordula Motz, Mon-ika Kluck and Sina Hönig from the HR de-partment; Goran Uremovic and his Customer Service team; and Thomas Waldner and Uwe Lehmann from Plant Maintenance for their tremendous support. After 20 years at b-ca, Nagy László retired in November. Called ‘Laci bácsi’ (‘Uncle Laci’) by all, he is a personali-

Nozzles, insert changes, hydraulic oil ... … electricity consumption, inventory, cleaning agents, tool repair – these are just a few of the technical terms Nagy László has dealt with daily over the last 20 years. On 2 March 1998, he began his career at b-ca as a toolmaker. He later became Head of Toolmaking, Technical Servicing and Building Maintenance. Thanks to his 12 years of prior activity as a special-ist toolmaking teacher, he brought with him to binder a great deal of ex-perience in the area of training. So it wasn’t unusual for one of his former trainees to seek and find a job in ‘his’ workshop at b-ca.
