2013 Annual Report to the Community

Working to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection,

and prevention of ovarian cancer.

I have been humbled and amazed by the outpouring of support for our work. In the 18 years

since I founded the Rivkin Center, we have invested more than $6 million in research alone.

And we have done that because of our extraordinary donors, thank you.

In July of this year I retired from medical practice, after 48 years. I knew I would miss my patients,

and I do. However, I am finding it so rewarding being at the Rivkin Center every day. December 6th was

an extraordinary day to be in the office. More than 120 applications for funding arrived from research

scientists from around the world. These applications for Rivkin Center Pilot Study and Scientific Scholar

Grants looked impressive stacked fifty deep on the front desk. They represent some of the best work being

done by the brightest scientists in the field of ovarian cancer research. Although I was frustrated we would

not be able to fund every worthy application, I found I was very proud that we will fund 12 awards with a total

of $1,000,000 – and all because of you, our donors!

No institution is capable of discovering a cure for ovarian cancer on its own, which is why I have always believed

in funding the best research wherever it is happening. It is also why I am so grateful for our partners at Swedish

Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and our wonderful Medical Director, Mary L.

(Nora) Disis, M.D. from the University of Washington. Working together, we will cure ovarian cancer.

Message from the Founder & Chairman

I echo Dr. Rivkin’s message of thanks. In 2013 we were able to budget an increase in scientific funding to support new ventures because of the extraordinary outpouring of support for our mission. Because of you we were able to advance our mission to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer.

The generosity and engagement of our donors, volunteers, board members, and many partners resulted in our raising $2.1million. In 2013 we awarded 10 Pilot Study Awards, three Scientific Scholar Awards, and launched a second 2-year Scientific Challenge Award – to leading investigators in the field. We also had more women than ever participating in our early detection screening program.

The Year in Review:

Our founder, Dr. Saul Rivkin surprised us in January by announcing that he would retire from clinical practice. We knew in the back of our minds that this day would come, but Saul gave us a tight timeline to plan a celebration! We are pleased so many of you were able to join us to wish Saul well for the next chapter in his journey.

To honor Saul’s remarkable clinical career and help fulfill his ambition to increase the national research focus on ovarian cancer, the Rivkin Center created the Saul Rivkin Innovation Fund. We have set a goal of raising $1,000,000 for this fund by the end of 2014 and we are will be on our way to success with more than $600,000 raised to date. We are extremely grateful to the many people who donated to the Saul Rivkin Innovation Fund.

Considering the amazing summer we enjoyed in the Pacific Northwest this year, July 21st was surprisingly cool and grey, but the weather did not daunt the spirits of the more than 3,000 people who turned out for the 19th annual SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer. Our survivor honoree Susun Hosford led more than 150 teams on the 5K walk and run.

Message from the Executive Director

This year we celebrated the 12th Anniversary of the Family & Friends Auction November 9th, 2013. We set a new record with more than 630 attendees. Thank you to Joyce Cutler and Eric Morse, good friends of the White family, our Honorary Chairs, and to our event committee headed by Scott Swerland and Katie Van Kessel, M.D. We were inspired by a poignant speech the evening of the auction from Kim Roth our amazing Courage for Life Awardee. Dr. Rivkin graciously and humbly accepted the Bab’s Fisher Valor Award from the Fisher family. That evening we raised more than $1 million!

The collective support of the community, with generous and thoughtful gifts ranging from $5 to $150,000, makes an extraordinary impact.

Your passion for the Rivkin Center expressed by your gifts translates directly into vitally needed research and expansion of free ovarian cancer early detection screening services.

The Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Program (OCEDP) is the cornerstone scientific effort created by the Rivkin Center to foster progress in the understanding and methodology of early detection screening of ovarian cancer. OCEDP has been the only program in the Pacific Northwest to assist women identified at high risk of developing ovarian cancer with access to novel biomarkers when they become available, while also providing researchers with tools to identify additional blood markers and technologies to improve current screening standards.

Located in the Wanda Jankelson Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic at the Swedish Cancer Institute (Seattle, WA), OCEDP provided in 2013 twice-yearly testing (CA125 blood measurement and ultrasound), collected and stored blood samples, conducted health status questionnaires, and administered genetic counseling sessions for 478 women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Additionally, OCEDP continues its collaboration with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Pacific Ovarian Cancer Research Consortium in the Novel Markers Trial (NMT) which tests multiple new biomarkers that have demonstrated promising early results for use in early detection screening. The goal is to assess the ability of these new protein markers, measured in the blood, in combined use with CA125, to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of current screening protocols using CA125 alone. It is estimated that as much as 20% of ovarian cancers do not express CA125, thus the key to developing a safe and effective early detection test for ovarian cancer lies in the discovery of additional, more accurate blood markers.

Many donors to the Rivkin Center are motivated by a strong desire to support women who have a family history of ovarian cancer or other indicators that suggest they might be at greater risk of developing the disease. Thanks to their generosity, the Rivkin Center is able to help high-risk women in our community and continue vital efforts to improve early detection screening techniques.
