Remote access is the ability to do business outside the office.

• Explore and demonstrate:

– RWW – Remote Web Workplace

– VDI – Virtual Desktop Interface – XenDesktop

• Explore Remote Control Products




Remote control products allow you to take control of one computer from another computer remotely.

Remote Control Products


There are many products for remote control such as:

The advantages of Remote Control software include:

• Easy to use

• Easy to manage for the person initiating the connection

• Good for small offices without a network

• Good for small businesses connecting to many clients

• Allows remote printing and file transfer

• Can be used with tablets



The disadvantages of Remote Control software include:

• Security of the firm is bypassed creating a new attack surface for a hacker

• Requires installation of an agent

• May not work at all source locations

• If there is an issue with Host PC access is lost

• Limited ability for IT to support

• Antivirus software may see the application as a threat

• Remote user has access to entire computer





VPN software allows for a connection between one computer or network and another. The connection is basic and is oriented around carrying traffic.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)


A VPN is the simplest form of remote access but its implementation is complex.



VPN’s have these advantages:

• Cost-effective

• High level of security

• Applications can be prioritized over the link

• Useful for connecting multiple offices

• Can be combined with other technologies



VPN’s have these disadvantages:

• May not be able to access target system from some locations (ex. Hotels)

• Multi-vendor technologies may not work well together

• Difficult to troubleshoot connectivity issues

• Risk of transferring virus to the internal system



VPN’s have these disadvantages:

• Poor user interface

• May block access to local resources (ex. Printers, Browsing)

• High bandwidth utilization

• Application must be installed on local computer





Remote Web Workplace provides remote access to a computer in the office using the technology embedded in Microsoft’s Small Business Server.

Remote Web Workplace (RWW)


Remote Web Workplace relies on Microsoft Small Business Server.



RWW has the following advantages:

• Low cost (comes with server)

• Provides access to Outlook Web Access

• Easy to use and troubleshoot

• Session timing can be controlled

• Greater protection from viruses vs. VPN

• Supports all applications on the desktop

• Supports file transfers to and from remote PC

• Can close and resume your session



RWW has the following disadvantages:

• Must have a computer on in the office

• Not convenient for laptop users

• Does not support Mac computers or Tablets

• Redirection of printing sometimes fails

• Computer is dedicated to remote user





Remote Desktop Services provides remote access to applications without the need for a computer.

Remote Desktop Services (RDS)


Remote Desktop Services provides a desktop experience without a desktop.



RDS has these advantages:

• Standardizes the desktop experience for all users

• Easy to use interface

• Greater protection from viruses vs. RWW

• Supports most applications used on a desktop

• Ensures file storage is server based

• Can be accessed from anywhere via PC only

• Can be used internally



RDS has these disadvantages:

• Requires that you use Internet Explorer

• Does not support native Mac computers or Tablets

• Video and audio perform poorly

• Does not allow users to install their own software





XenApp is built on top of Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and provides more functionality and flexibility.

Citrix XenApp


Citrix XenApp is the standard for professional remote access.


Citrix Receiver


XenApp has these advantages:

• Can connect with other devices

• Standardized working environments

• Available internally or over the Internet

• Redundancy can be built into the system

• If disconnected, work is not lost

• Can be used from any location

• Most printers are supported for local printing



XenApp has these advantages:

• Can transfer your work to another device

• Users can customize application settings

• USB devices are supported

• Supports business continuity

• Very low bandwidth usage

• Can be used on an older computer

• Application does not need to be installed on local computer



XenApp has these disadvantages:

• More complicated environment to set up

• Typically requires external expertise to properly configure the environment

• More expensive licensing costs

• Compatibility issues for some applications





Citrix XenDesktop provides a complete computer for use by the remote or local user.

Citrix XenDesktop VDI (Virtual Desktop Interface)


VDI delivers virtualized desktops to users from anywhere.



VDI does this by breaking up the components of a desktop.


Citrix Receiver


VDI has the following advantages:

• Can connect with other devices

• Can standardize the operating system and application base

• Users can install their own applications – like a PC

• Virtual desktops are created as needed with all standard settings

• Can have desktops for different operating systems

• Complete application compatibility



VDI has the following advantages:

• Diskless cost effective thin clients can be used

• Lower IT support costs

• Video and audio perform like a real PC

• Can transfer your work to another device

• USB devices are supported

• The future of desktop technology deployment



VDI has the following disadvantages:

• The technology is bleeding edge

• High implementation cost

• External expertise is required to set up a stable system
