Automated Publishing Platform

In 2009 In 2014

In 2009, the Monographs were manually laid out in Word and published in print and as a flat PDF. In 2014, our automated single-source publishing system produces PDFs for print, interactive PDFs, and EPUB. This completely in-house process puts our team fully in control of all aspects of the publishing cycle.

Planning and Production

Customized Content Management System (IOPS)

• All meeting drafts submitted in one location and available to all meeting participants

• Integrated pre-meeting peer-review process within the Working Group • Online version control before and during meeting • Writing instructions, Preamble, and links to myNCBI/ FTP in one platform • Less printing during meeting due to version control in IOPS

• Single Source Publishing system produces PDF for print, interactive PDF, and EPUB from XML

• Automated application of styles and branding • Automated layout in InDesign takes just a few minutes per document • Editor can instantly review proofs and alter layout • Faster production cycle leading to economies of both time and money

In 2009, the work of the IARC Monographs team was essentially paper-based. We had a backlog of 8 volumes. Between 2010 and 2013 we published 19 VOLUMES of the IARC Monographs. In 2014, we have in place: • Customized Content Management System (IOPS) • Electronic checking schedule for each Monograph • Greatly increased use of electronic tools for checking and

editing, both pre- and post-meeting • Reduction in print run from 1800 to 300 • Substantial reduction in time between meeting and

publication

Workflow Development In 2009, the Monographs Workflow was not documented. The process was communicated by word of mouth. In 2014, we have a fully documented Workflow that can be easily accessed by all members of the Monographs team. The Workflow is a dynamic tool with hyperlinks at each stage to detailed Action Plans and Tips for Success. Continuous improvement of this tool in a rapidly evolving environment is key to its success.
