SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

We evaluated many use-cases for greatest potential for market impact and revenues, and these four came out on top (WP2.1, D2.1):

1. Edge delivery and offload of content and VNF software,

2. 5G fixed backhaul, for connecting cellular base-stations,

3. 5G to premises, in parallel with fixed network to enhance broadband,

4. 5G moving platform backhaul, such as aeroplanes and trains.

We defined business, operational and technical requirements for these use-cases (WP2.2 – WP2.4, D2.2)

We performed quantitative techno-economic analysis of these use-cases (WP2.5, D2.3) as follows

• Economic modelling of computing and networking resource for VNFs and network slicing,

• Modelled each use-case and produced business-specific results,

• Incorporated a ‘broker’ concept for multiple MNOs / SNOs.

6

WP2 Overview – summary of activities

Page 7: Work package 2: Scenarios for Satellite Integration in 5G ... · WP2.2 Business Requirements (BT) WP2.3 Operational Requirements (AVA) WP2.4 Technical Requirements (TAS) D2.2 Business,

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Started with four high level principles from the proposal

• Enable “plug-and-play”,

• Seamless operation at management and security levels,

• Enable eMBB services everywhere and to all market verticals,

• No changes or adaptations needed on user equipment,

We applied this as follows

• Reviewed current satellite services sector to set context for current best practice,

• Assessed the market size for the SaT5G use cases from D2.1,

• Created generic value network to indentify the key players so their needs could be considered,

Made initial observation of possible broker role between MNOs and SNOs,

• Derived SaT5G KPIs from high level 5G PPP KPIs to provide reference for validation activities,

• Reviewed and derived general requirements for business operational and technical.

WP2.2 – 2.4 Requirements

Page 8: Work package 2: Scenarios for Satellite Integration in 5G ... · WP2.2 Business Requirements (BT) WP2.3 Operational Requirements (AVA) WP2.4 Technical Requirements (TAS) D2.2 Business,

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Business requirements

• Identify key stakeholders

• Capture stakeholder requirements

• Categorise those requirements

Functional, which are functions that the network must perform

Non-functional, which are aspects such as reliability, regulatory, performance, usability

• Interpret business requirements

Operational requirements

• Operations and management systems

Accounting and Billing

OSS

• Deployment constraints

Cost efficiency, such as shared MNO / SNO costs of remote sites

• Network maintenance

Best practice to support SLAs, change management etc

8

Requirements methodology

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Technical requirements

• Network management

To follow standardised practices such as those set out by ETSI MANO

• QoS management

End to end QoS using mapping of 5G QCI to Satellite QoS classes

Architectural based requirements. Following the definition of architectures in WP3, the requirements

were refined, examples are:

• Network management, where additional flexibility is provided through orchestration

• Slice management, with dynamic use of compute resources and satellite link resources, and

federated satellite between multiple MNOs.

9

Requirements methodology

Page 10: Work package 2: Scenarios for Satellite Integration in 5G ... · WP2.2 Business Requirements (BT) WP2.3 Operational Requirements (AVA) WP2.4 Technical Requirements (TAS) D2.2 Business,

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Business requirements have been found to be

• Satellite network functions compliant with standards bodies like 3GPP or ITU,

• Virtualization requirements to be able to integrate satellites networks into multiple slices,

• Edge delivery and caching functionalities needed,

• Five possible goals for the analysis identified,

The major operational requirements are found to be

• Legal requirements, for example regulatory limits on transmit power and interference levels,

• The need for network management systems to allow maintenance and management of the network, billing, order placement and customer support systems,

• Dynamic allocation of network capacity and network resources needed,

The major technical requirements are found to be

• Management of end-to-end QoS,

• Management and orchestration to be integrated following the ETSI MANO specifications,

• End-to-end slicing with isolation between slices and appropriate levels of security,

• Support for IP multicast and multi-linking (parallel satellite and terrestrial paths).

Where does the integrated network provide a viable alternative compared to terrestrial-only solutions?

What is the average cost per user and how does it relate to the willingness to pay?

Who bears the risk in case of a failure in the integrated network?

How can technological evolutions such as network slicing and caching help the business case?

Investigate the impact of technological innovation on the totalcost

(1) impact of caching– less bandwidth to be used over the backhaul(satellite) link– saves from 20% to 40% of the OPEX;(2) impact of network slicing– more efficient use of resources– saves costs on the core network side(3) Satellite multicast decreases the OPEX for theintegrated SaT5G solution

Sensitivity analysis studies the impact of the uncertainty of inputs on the uncertainty of the model’s

outputs

Key parameters are identified using the mathematical formulation of the cost model of each use case.

For each parameter a distribution is defined based on the most likely values.

Step Description

Identify Key Stakeholders Identify the key people who will be affected by the project (see section 3.4)

Capture Stakeholder Requirements

Ask each of these key stakeholders, or groups of stakeholders, for their requirements from the new product or service. What do they want and expect from this project? We can use several methods to understand and capture these requirements

Categorize Requirementsa The most used approach consists in separating the functionalb and non-functionalc requirements. While dividing the specifications into two neat categories is an orderly way to write the documentation, we should remember that in the real world the functional and non-functional requirements are always tightly intertwined [129].

Interpreting and Recording Requirements

Once we have gathered and categorized all of the requirements, determine which requirements are achievable, and how the system or product can deliver them [131].

33

Business requirement methodology

The SaT5G business solution considered enhanced usage predictions in areas with low ARPUs.

Page 32: Work package 2: Scenarios for Satellite Integration in 5G ... · WP2.2 Business Requirements (BT) WP2.3 Operational Requirements (AVA) WP2.4 Technical Requirements (TAS) D2.2 Business,

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Decide what is in and out of scope. Examples of operational requirements that are out of scope

• Spectrum requirements and regulation / sharing

• Taxation, licence fees etc

Consider relevant KPIs. Examples:

• 5GPPP KPI: “Ubiquitous 5G access including in low density areas”

Coverage and availability requirements are generally set by national governments

• Slicing

Enables the application specific parameters to meet the KPIs;

Allows third party managed services for network management;

Enables third party operators to share the site to reduce operator costs in remote regions;

Permits third party managed network security services at cell sites;

Consider legal / safety requirements

• Especially for moving platforms (incurs additional costs)

Needs of the Operational Support Systems of stakeholders, for example

• Accounting and billing

• Network management

34

Operational requirements methodology Back up

Page 33: Work package 2: Scenarios for Satellite Integration in 5G ... · WP2.2 Business Requirements (BT) WP2.3 Operational Requirements (AVA) WP2.4 Technical Requirements (TAS) D2.2 Business,

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G

Deployment constraints

• Cost efficiency - such as network transformation, software upgrades, phasing out of legacy

equipment

Network maintenance

• Managed service provider is responsible for the operational management of the services and

satellite service provider does the installation and of remote segment / local gateway;

• SLA for incident/fault notification and fix times;

• Change management, problem management, technical care support;

• MNO/ third party responsible for spare parts management;

• Contact methods and escalation paths;

SaT5G followed best industry practice, informed through relevant partners (MNO, SNO etc).
