“Time flies when you are having fun.” It also flies when you are busy. The Seniors Foundation board is busy, and we are enjoying the work, so the board year is moving quickly. While we are proud of the board’s past achievements — the beginning years of support for the Senior Centers; the Forever Strong Health Club; the educational programming on 5 City TV — our current excitement centers on our newest project, the Lincoln Seniors Transportation Program (LSTP). Our volunteers have taken to the road following more than three years of preparation. This is truly a grand accomplishment which could not have happened without community support and donations.
The pilot phase of the LSTP project has been running since January and our CARS (Catch A Ride Seniors) campaign has been launched to raise needed funds. It was my privilege to drive for our first rider and I’m happy to report that it was not just rewarding, it was fun. Our riders are so appreciative and coop-erative; it makes for an enjoyable experience. If you would like to take part in this program as a volunteer driver or in a support position, please don’t hesitate to call the Seniors Foundation office at 441-6179 or visit the website: seniorsfoundation.org.
There are two other areas of need we have also em-phasized this year. Our Snow Removal Campaign raised funds for clearing sidewalks of the elderly with a financial need and no other option of available support. Our in-kind donations of durable medical equipment have also increased this year, helping those with medical needs. Again, our list of contribu-tors reflects many who have chosen these areas to support and we thank them.
Our board members have used their individual cre-
Work, fun and excitement surrounds Seniors Foundationativity to help our organization. Mary Jane Nielsen has authored two books: A Street Named O and Life in Lincoln…as we remember it. Her generous donation of a portion of the proceeds from these books is very much appreciated. Midge Irvin has expertly led our Event committee and developed a “Senior Moment” campaign. Watch your mailbox this spring for this creative giving opportunity.
At the beginning of the year our board made a com-mitment to get to know each other better, to say thank you often, and to make our fund raising more personal. In January, we changed our board meeting into a “retreat”. We enjoyed opening remarks from President Elect of the Lincoln Community Founda-tion, Mr. Jeff Peetz. His talk focused on the value of non-profits to our community and of our work as volunteers. His message of the importance of thank-ing donors, board members, and staff gave us a good feeling that our approach was right on track. We then continued with group discussions and created an ad hoc committee that is now meeting to continue to refine the ideas discussed. We will be conducting further research and outreach to get input from citizens such as you.
As we plan our future endeavors, I am so pleased that Alice Skultety will be assuming the president’s duties in July. Alice has played an integral part in every aspect of the Foundation including four years on the Executive committee and chairing our developing transportation program. Alice and our entire board are committed to endeavors that will help Lincoln continue to be a wonderful place to live.

Each year the Foundation pro-vides support to various pro-grams and activities centered on older adults. Dale Bergantzel, shown with his art piece “Pin Wheels #93,” was one of several artists recognized in the “Fine Art of Experience,” a juried art show featuring artwork created after artist’s 55th birthday.

By Alice Skultety President Elect of the Board of Directors The Seniors Foundation
Alice Skultety, president elect of the Se-niors Foundation Board of Directors, is in her ninth year of service on the Board. She has been in the banking business for
23 years and a Lincolnite for the past 18 years. She is a trust officer at Union Bank & Trust, administering trusts and estates in the Personal Trust and Wealth Management Department.
One of the commitments of the Seniors Foundation Board is to stay abreast of the changing issues of older adults in the Lincoln area. Our initial research confirms that older adults value their independence. And we know our community prospers when people are allowed to age in place.
Over the past several years we have heard many positive stories from people, of how programs and services of the Lincoln Area Agency on Aging and Seniors Foundation have improved their quality of life. People like Mabel who joined the Forever Strong Health Club and later attended one of our meetings to show us how she could again touch her toes and walk unassisted.
Surveys and auditsDuring the coming year, we will be conducting sur-veys and audits of interests and concerns. We encour-age you to respond if you receive a questionnaire or
survey. Your input will help us prioritize and target future projects. Everyone, no matter his or her age is encouraged to participate.
One area of interest in our fact finding outreach will be to gather input from the “younger” generations. Do they have grandparents in the area – what is their concept of old age? In what ways do they interact with older people?
Other questions of interest will be directed to indi-viduals who are still working – Are they, or are they preparing to be, caregivers for their parents? Have they thought about what they will do when their parents stop driving? Do their parents live close by?
And we want to hear from the retired population. We would like to know your health and fitness needs – are you still driving? What are your biggest needs?
Let us hear from youWe invite anyone who has identified some area of con-cern that affects a segment of our older adult popula-tion to put the ideas in writing and send them to:
