PALEOKASTRO

Paleokastro is a triangular- shaped castle and it consists of three levels “tre piazze” because of the sloping hill that it ‘s built on.

Access is through the main gate to the south and is the only gate to a castle in Crete , half carved on the rock

The three levels consisted of the lowest level ; gunpowder magazines built on the slope to be protected from enemies, and right next to them a reservoir that accumulated rainwater which could be used in the event of fire in the powder magazines.
