Greetings and a warm welcome to my very first issue of Words On Fire Magazine!

I couldnt be any more excited to have made it to this point. Please take some time to get to know the layout of my magazine. You can look at one category at a time, or just peruse the articles on the home page to choose which to read first. Just as with a paper magazine, you may want to sit and read the whole thing at once, or come back to this issue several times to read the articles more slowly.

When I set out to create an iPad publication that would promote writing and creative thinking and scholarly research, one thing I decided on right away was to steer-away from the glossy images of the too-perfect, product-driven magazines that we all sometimes read. What you will find in the pages of Words On Fire Magazine is a collection of inspired and instructive articles written by real, honest, down-to-earth person who works hard to live to the carefully, but who is not afraid to admit the struggles he sometimes faces. I dont always have hours to exercise every day. My house is perfect. However, I stay informed and eat as healthy as I can, but I am also realistic and flexible.

I appreciate your support and is so happy to have you as a reader of Words On Fire Magazine.

    With warmest thanks,

    Sincerely yours,Saeed Al Mheiri

  • Beauty Pageants Are De-grading

Beauty contests are very degrading to women; the sponsors pay to see these women parade around a stage in a swimsuit, or even possibly lingerie. Then these contestants are mainly judged on their physical attributes and completely ignore their mental capabilities and other qualities they may possess. When the women parade themselves on stage, the judges will look at a number of things, but the most important criteria will probably be poise. To achieve proper poise, a womans body should be well proportioned - having a neck proportionate to her height, beautiful long legs and so on. This process of evaluating poise can be compared to dog shows where golden retrievers of the wrong bodily proportions are removed out of the competition. I feel judging women primarily on their looks degrade womanhood. Moreover, beauty contests project an unrealistically thin image of the ideal woman in the eyes of the public. As it is, we are already bombarded with such silly standards by the mass media. Do we really need a beauty pageant to further aggravate the situation? A John Hopkins study has shown that more than half of the Miss America pageant winners are underweight, with a Body Mass Index of about 18.5, well below the normal BMI of 25 -- 20. Insecure women who watch the pageants are bound to develop a false body image and may even become anorexic or even bulimic just to look like beauty queens.Being a Muslim, I feel beauty contests violate some religious and cultural practices. I consider western style beauty contests as immoral, because

the female participants are typically not dressed modestly. This really degrades women in the eyes of a conservative society. Lastly, when the winner wears a crown and reigns for a year, she is actually being exploited to do cheap promotions for the sponsors who make use of her to promote their products until they see it fit to replace her with some other beauties. This is cold and mercenary. For all the reasons given, I find beauty contests degrading to women. Every woman is beautiful in her own right. They do not have to take part in beauty contests to make others appreciate them and tell them that they are beautiful by other peoples standards, especially not people that pay them for it.

  • In my life as a jellybean I have been more than patient, I have lived a life packaged on a shelf in a grocery store left on a box filled with coloration.

The beauty of it all is that I come from a family of rocks. Rocks are not always breakable, especially not diamond rocks.

Marni has always been on my side, green as a grass field. I still remember when fall came and turned her yellow with some gold pale strings. I on the other hand was never changed; I remained the jellybean I am,

waiting to be quenched.Fleeing the war from syria, syrian refugees hope to find a safer place in Turkey, a neighbouring non arab country. Its a shame none of the arab countries tried to refuge the syrians in fact tried their best to fully ignore the situation happening in a neighbouring arab country. The saddening fact is, most of the other arab countries knew that were refuges go to, troubles follow. The recent

bombings in Turkey, a relatively very safe country that is hoping to join the European Union is blamed on the civil war in syria. The bombings killed atleast 40 people and injured many more, this is a fact that can not be ignored.I admire the turkish government for stepping in and helping the syrians but how safe can turkey be after hosting a war? how safe is a safe haven ?

  • The first and second world wars were the larg-est military conflicts in history, The First World War (WWI) was fought from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War (or WWII) was fought from 1939 to 1945. The First World War mainly centered in Europe, however the Second World War branched out and some powers from Asia interfered. The Second World War was especially shocking because of the genocide of Jewish people perpetrated by the Nazis.

In the First World War, the world Warring nations were divided into two groups namely The Central Powers and The Allied Powers. The central powers group consisted of Ger-many, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. The Allied powers group consisted of France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and in 1917 the joining of the U.S.

The War was caused by the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria in June 1914 by Serbian nationalists; this escalated the issues of the war between the Austrian- Hungarian empire and the other alliance nations in Europe i.e Russia, France while Germany and Austria- Hungary were allies. The Nature of the war was between countries for acquiring colonies or territory or resources that left around an estimate of 10 million dead and 21 million wounded. The German, Russian, Austro- Hungarian and Ottoman Empireswere militarily and politically defeated. Aus-tro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires ceased to exist. The League of Nations was formed in the hope of preventing another such conflict.

However, In the Second World War the op-posing alliances are now referred to as The Axis and The Allies. The Axis group con-sisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Allies group consisted of France, Britain, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China.

The main cause of the Second World War was the political and economic instability in Germany caused by the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Ver-sailles, the rise of power of Adolf Hitler and his alliance with Italy and Japan to oppose the Soviet Union.

This war was mainly a war of ideolo-gies between fascism and communism, that left more than 40 million men and women serving in the armed forces by

The war ended with the total victory of the Allies over Germany and Japan in 1945 when the United States used atomic bombs against Japan because it failed to surrender. The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers due to the war of ideologies between communism and a fear of the end of the American free world. The United Nations was established to foster international cooperation and prevent conflicts after the failure of the League of Nations.
