NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 17/2020 OF 1 December 2020 Words by the Chair Dear colleagues, During our next ITRE Committee , we are looking forward to meeting welcoming Ms. Cristina Lobillo Borrero, Director in DG Energy of the European Commission, who will present the Commission's Report on energy prices and costs in Europe and the Report on energy subsidies in the EU. Afterwards we will have an exchange of views on “A European Strategy for Hydrogen” report as well as “A European Strategy for Energy System Integration”. The first report emphasises that the EU needs to develop a sustainable hydrogen economy aimed at making clean hydrogen competitive as soon as possible; while the second focuses on the development of a system enabling all sectors of the European economy to decarbonise by building on the synergies between them and between Member States. We will also be voting on the “New Circular Economy Action Plan” opinion. Here the target is on measures along the entire life cycle of products, the new Action Plan aims to make our economy fit for a green future, strengthening our competitiveness globally. Cristian-Silviu Buşoi Exchange of views A European Strategy for Hydrogen Consideration of draft report Rapporteur: Jens Geier The Rapporteur, Mr Jens Geier, will present his draft report on a European Strategy for Hydrogen in response to the Commission communication of 8 July 2020 ‘A hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe’. The report aims at analysing the political, economic and technological needs for a sustainable hydrogen economy in the EU, thereby complementing the strategy proposed by the Commission. The report emphasises that the EU needs to develop a sustainable hydrogen economy aimed at making clean hydrogen competitive as soon as possible. A successful hydrogen economy with European technological leadership could help the EU to strengthen its economy and create future-proof jobs, especially after the economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the EC Communication of July 2020 proposes ways for enhancing circularity and efficiency and developing electrification of consumption, based on renewables. The rapporteur will present his draft opinion on this subject matter. He welcomes the development of a system enabling all sectors of the European economy to decarbonise by building on the synergies between them and between Member States. However, he deplores the insufficient progress made by Member States in decarbonising their energy systems so far. He also emphasizes his strong concerns in relation to ensuring energy accessibility for all consumers and preserving EU leadership and skills in highly technical sectors that contribute to system integration.
