INTRODUCTION

Fr om Oxfor d Advance Lear ner¶s Dictionary Inter national Student¶s Edition, wor d

search is a game consisting of letters arr anged in a square containing sever al hidden

wor ds that you must f ind. While puzzle means a game, etc. that you have to think about 

carefully in or der  to answer  it or do it and something that is diff icult to understand or  

explain (Hor nby, 2010). 

So, in gener al we can say that wor d search puzzle is a game that requires the 

player  to f ind hidden wor d by answering questions given. 

For  years, games are pr actice in classr oom to attr act student attention as it 

keeps their  body and mind together  thr ough the lear ning pr ocess. Games can be played

in the beginning of the class to stimulate the idea about new topic or at the last af ter  the 

syllabus all covered to test student¶s understanding. 

Starting the teaching of a topic creatively with build student¶s interest to the topic 

as the f irst impression about something is really important. This enjoyable appr oach will

increase pupil involvement and motivation to lear n. 

Games such as wor d search puzzle also can be a good knowledge tr ansf erring

tool as teachers can determine students understanding. In the other hand, it also helps 

to develop creative thinking, IT skills, language and communication skills.

WORD PUZZLE SOFTWARE

BASIC INFORMATION

The sof tware was developed using Micr osof t Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. 

It tar geted to upper-primary students specif ically standar d 5. Sub ject covered was 

science mainly focus in unit 9 lesson 1 ± acid and alkaline. (Azizah, Sopia, Suwaibatu, 

& Yatim, 2007) 

The instr uction is f ind all the wor d hidden in the grid of letters. The wor ds may be 

hidden in any direction, including diagonally and backwar d. Once you click on the letter, 

the box will tur n blue. If you want to change the letter, just double click the same letter  

and the box color will tur n white again. 

Lastly, to check the right answer  just clicks the  button. The right 

wor d will appear green.

JUSTIFICATION OF QUESTION

Games and simulations constitute a highly versatile and flexible medium whereby 

a wide r ange of cognitive ob jectives covering all six levels of Bloom¶s cognitive domain

can be achieved (Ellington, Gor don, & Fowlie, 1998) 

The all 12 questions in this sof tware is basically ref erring to 5W and 1H method

that is basic appr oach to collecting key information. They are what, why, where, when, 

who and how. The question asked were basically lower  thinking or der as the majority of 

the standar d 5 students are newly mastering reading and calculating skills. Therefore, 

they were tested about knowledge, comprehension and application only. 

First question, what you use to determine acidic or alkaline? It was a very basic 

knowledge because thr oughout the topic, the main thing discussed was the usage of 

litmus paper  to determine the acidic or alkaline pr operties of substances. 

Question 3, 4 and 5 were about the student comprehension about the usage of 

litmus paper. Red litmus paper will tur n to blue when tested with alkaline substance but 

will remain the same if tested with acid substance. Whereas, blue litmus paper will tur n

to red when tested with acid substance but will remain the same if tested with alkaline 

substance. In addition, neutr al substance will not change both red and blue litmus 

paper. 

Then for  sixth and seventh questions, they were about ³who´. The student needs 

to look carefully what substance that the f igure in the picture hold and relate their  

knowledge with their  surr oundings to answer. Bob would be the answer for  the sixth and

Chin for  the next question. 

 Af ter  that again in eighth and ninth questions, they were at knowledge level. How

acidic and food tastes? This answer  can be found directly in the Science Standar d 5 

text book at page 94. Acidic food is sour whereas alkaline food is bitter.

For  the next two questions, they were asking ³where´. Here once again the 

student needs to relate the questions to their  surr ounding and think a bit further. There 

were hints given to them to guess the right answer. Bathr oom was where they can

found alkaline substances such as toothpaste, deter gent and soap. The neutr al

substance can be found at river as the f resh water  is neutr al. 

Lastly the question was a little bit higher  because af ter  being told that they can

tests the pr operties of substance using litmus paper, they were asked when the litmus 

paper  cannot  be used to determine the acidity and alkaline of substance? The answer  

was dry as only wet litmus paper used during experiment.

REFLECTION

This short course really helps me understand the use of 5W 1H method to collect 

the key of information and presents it in wor d search puzzle questions form accor ding

Bloom taxonomy. Fr om it, I know the suitable question¶s level for  student as in this 

course I chose standar d 5 students. Therefore, the distribution of question would even

and not be too har d or  easy. 

Other  than that, it also induced my interest pr oducing my own sof tware. I ask my 

best f riend help as we together used to do it during secondary school for  Information

and Communication Technology sub ject coursework during SPM. 

It is not easy as I think because there were many unexpected pr oblems ar oused

but I still love to do as challenge will made us remember what we were lear ning. Since 

we were not fully mastered this sof tware, Micr osof t Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition

so, there were unrecovered err ors in this Wor d Puzzle Sof tware. Honestly, I just lear ned

about the right pr ogr amming code tr ough online tutorial (Kiong, 2008) thus, pr acticing

trial and err or  method to build this. 

I enjoyed doing this coursework because it opened my eyes to how capable I am 

to work under  limited time and resources. I have lear ned about maximizing the usage of sources ar ound me to complete chores and asked for helped if I really could not do it 

alone as the pr overb says two br ains is better  than one. I have become more conf ident 

and goal-oriented. My or ganizational skills have impr oved greatly. I am looking for war d

to the rest of my college experience, and to the working wor ld beyond.
