Foreword to Scholarship and

Pedagogy in a Time of Technological Change

Within the following bibliographic entries are many of the seeds whose germination during the next decade will change the practice of scholarly writing and traditional pedagogy. It seems certain that writing will remain under pressure to rede- fine itself in terms of the more encompassing concept of "communication." Popular demand will emphasize the total environment in which ideas are transmitted and received. Long established in journalism, the familiar visual packaging of a writer's thought in terms of typography and pictures will continue to expand into the computer-driven realm of multi- media, including desktop publishing, video, color, sound, and animation. Writing will take on more characteristics of the documentary as graphics scanners add to clip-art and photo- graphic databases increasingly available both on CD-ROM and online.

The dramatic acceptance of nonlinear or random hypertext approaches to instruction and research is part of the same urge for simultaneity found in windows-based software. In fact, faculty who teach the art of speaking have been quick to
