RECOMMENDED SPEAKERS BROCHURE 2019/20

HELPFUL NOtES

1. Many Speakers today require booking well in advance and WIs are advised to plan their programmes at least six months ahead. When booking Speakers please check with them, fees and travelling expenses, in case they have changed since publication.

2. Remember when booking Speakers to: •Givesubjectoflectureandtimeallocatedforthemtospeak •State-Date,Time,DayandPlaceofmeeting •Stateapproximatenumberexpectedinaudience •ContactALLSpeakersingoodtime,includingWIAsandCountySub-committeeMembers

3. Telephone bookings should ALWAYS be confirmed in email/writing and copies kept.

4. Ready-printedformstoSpeakersareavailablefromWIHouseoratthebackofthisbrochure.

5. Reminders to Speakers should be sent at least two weeks before your meeting and most SpeakersappreciatecleardirectionstoyourHall.ParkingfacilitiesforyourSpeakerneartothe door of the Hall are also appreciated.

6. PleaseensuremobilecontactdetailsareexchangedwithSpeakerincaseofemergency/ last minute changes.

7. The Federation would be pleased to have suggestions for additions to the panel of Speakers and would welcome favourable comments.

8. In the event of a WI needing to make a complaint against a speaker that is listed in the brochure, please submit complaint details to WI House whereupon the matter will be investigated. The Federation will remove a speaker if after investigation there has been three separate complaints made.

9. TheBoardofTrusteesandSub-committeemembersarepleasedtoattendmeetingsandtalk about their own particular aspect of the WI. Expenses for these visits are the responsibility of the WIs.

10. Where Speakers request a Donation to Charity in lieu of a fee, cheques MUSt be made out to the Speaker and NOt the Charity. HOWEvER, should a speaker request that payment be made directly to their charity, WIs are advised to request an invoice from the charity which clearly states the name of the speaker and that payment is for the services provided. 11. Complaints about Speakers listed in this book should be made in writing to the Board of Trustees.

12. Each WI will receive a free copy of this brochure, extra copies to WI members may be available from WI House, price 50p each, plus postage.

1. CreatingBooksforChildren-HenryBearandhisCousinFred feature in a series of children’s books created by Mark. Together with some lovable teddy bears he shows how the stories are created and tells of the bears’ adventures.

2. TheWorldofSelf-Publishing-Thedigitalagehasenablepeople to publish their own books for very reasonable prices. Mark explains how this has come about and demonstrates how the process works

3. WorkingasaPlaywright-Markspecialisesinwritingcomic plays for schools and youth drama groups to perform. His plays have been performed internationally. Mark talks about how a play can be created, the constraints that have to be considered and the influencesthathaveinspiredhim.GiveninaidofActionfor Children.

4. TalesfromTheForest-Markistheauthoroftwobooks 'Tales from The Forest' and 'When the gorse is in bloom…' Both books recount stories from the countryside of not so long ago. CRAFTCOLLECTIONC/oCreativeActivitiesSub-committeeThere are now well over a hundred beautiful items in our Craft Loan Collection which have been given or lent to the WI over the years. They range from the oldest, a beautiful late 19th Century silk evening bag, to expert examples of modern crafts with all decades in between, from tatting to wood turning and from smockingtometalwork.AmongthemostinterestingarethosewhichillustratetheearlyhistoryoftheWI's teaching role, and include garments made to show different finishing skills and techniques, as well as saleable items of the time such as exquisite gloves.

AmemberoftheCreativeActivitiesCommitteewillbehappytobringaselectionoftheCollectiontoyour WI and to talk about what we know of the pieces. With some we have a full history, or at least know theoriginandwherepossible,willbringexamplesrelatedtoyourWI.Otherwisewehopeyouwillenjoyseeing and hearing about these, literally, state of the art, varied examples of WI craft skills.

The only fees are £10 to help with the costs of keeping and conserving the collection, and a payment of travelling expenses to the presenter.
