HIKING

If the campus green isn’t enough wilderness for you, try taking a hike, or maybe a bike ride or run, to one of these Central Mass. outdoor retreats. Most trails are well marked and fairly easy to moderate climbs, however, be prepared when you trek off by following these suggestions:

• Let someone know where you’ll be and when you expect to return

• Bring water and healthy snacks like granola and fruit

• Wear sneakers or boots — walking in the woods is not a fashion contest

• If maps are available, bring one!

• Don’t leave valuables in plain sight in your car at parking areas. While break-ins are not frequent, they have been known to happen at some places

Wachusett Mountain State Reservation345 Mountain Rd., Princeton 978-464-2987 mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/massparks/region-central/wachusett-mountain-state-reservation.htmlHiking trails are dirt and rocky, including one that doubles as the Midstate Trail, to the summit at 2,006 feet where an accessible tower provides views of Boston, Mount Greylock, New Hampshire and Worcester on clear days.

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation 198 Purgatory Rd., Sutton 508-234-3733 mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/massparks/region-central/purgatory-chasm-state-reservation.htmlA rocky, yet easy, walking trail that runs a quarter of a mile through granite walls that rise as high as 70 feet. Several other short trails lead to unique, natural rock formations.

Cascades Waters, Cascades East, Cascades West Olean St., Worcester gwlt.org/maps/cascades.pdf A network of dirt and, at times rocky, trails connecting the west side of Worcester with Holden. Several trails

Quinsigamond State Park 10 North Lake Ave., Worcester 508-755-6880

mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/massparks/region-central/quinsigamond-state-park.htmlThe urban park is divided by Route 9 with one location on either side of the route’s bridge that crosses Lake Quinsigamond. Regatta Point, on the north end, is primarily used for swimming and sailing, while Lake Park, on the south end, offers a paved and part dirt 1-mile walking path, also used by many for running.

GROUP BIKE RIDESWorcester Loopsfacebook.com/WorcesterLoopsOriginally a group bike ride that started in Denver, Colo., Loops has grown to other cities, including Worcester. The group rides every Friday where unique loops are chosen every week, ranging from 5 to 15 miles. Each ride has a rest stop for riders to stop (and enjoy a beverage of choice, according to the website).

Seven Hills Wheelmensevenhillswheelmen.orgSeven Hills Wheelmen is a recreational group for adults in the Worcester area who enjoy bicycling and outdoor activities. A schedule of their rides and starting locations can be found on their website.

Gear Works Cyclerygearworkscyclery.com/rides/With rides on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings, there are different levels for cyclists experienced or new, fast or slow, competitive or leisurely. Visit their website for scheduled ride times, as well as ride categories and pace descriptions.

SKATEPARKSWhether you just want to push around or drop into a concrete bowl, Central Mass. has several skateparks with a variety of features.

In Worcester, Green Hill Skatepark, located off of Skyline Drive, features a concrete street course and bowl. Worcide, a DIY skatepark in Worcester, offers concrete features andcan be found under a train bridge behind Green Street.

Subliminal Skatepark in Shrewsbury offers a mini-ramp, a bowl and street-style ledges, rails, banks, whirly-birds and more. The skatepark is indoors and there is a fee to skate.

In Hudson, about 25 minutes east of Worcester but worth the drive, is a skate park with several street features including ledges, as well as a concrete bowl.

Fitchburg has a concrete park that offers great flow with street features, a bowl, banks and quarter ramps. Fitchburg also has lights that allow for skating until 10 p.m. on certain nights.

An in-person visit with your doctor is often necessary — but sometimes it’s not. That’s where MyChart can help. MyChart is the secure online patient gateway to Reliant Medical Group. It lets you access medical records, request appointments and even communicate with your healthcare team. It also allows for the occasional “e-visit,” which enables your healthcare team to address simple health issues without an office visit. reliantmedicalgroup.org

Don’t have a car on campus? Don’t sweat. There are plenty of ways to get around.BUSWRTA Buses Main Office60 Foster St., Worcester 508-791-9782 therta.comThe WRTA is Worcester’s regional bus transit system. It provides safe, comfortable and reliable transportation around the city of Worcester as well as 37 surrounding communities. With its transportation hub at Union Station, all WRTA busses can connect commuters to other forms of transportation, including the commuter rail and taxi services. All busses, including the diesel-electric hybrids, are wheelchair accessible. Fares for the WRTA are $1.50 per one-way trip and a College Semester UPASS, giving unlimited rides to students for one semester, is available to students (with student ID) for $100. New technology allows commuters to get information about schedules and arrival times directly on their cell phones by either scanning a QR code or sending the bus number in a text message to 41411. Find a full list

of schedules at therta.com/schedules/. The bus system allows for a simple and inexpensive way to get off campus.

MART Buses1427R Water St., Fitchburg 978-345-7711 mrta.usThe Montachusett Regional Transit Authority (MART) is the public transportation system for Fitchburg and Gardner, located in North Central Massachusetts, serving 22 cities and towns. MART offers translation services at no charge, and all buses, including the recent hybrid additions, are wheelchair accessible. MART does not run on Sundays or Holidays. Fare within the Fitchburg/Leominster or Gardner Area is $1.50 per one-way trip, and $3 between Fitchburg/Leominster and Gardner. It is always a good idea to spend a few minutes exploring the MART website to learn routes, schedules and to open yourself to a simple and inexpensive transportation opportunity.

CABThe only way to get a cab in Worcester is by phone, so be sure to write these numbers down and save them

somewhere. On a late night, after busses stop running, a cab may be your safest way home. Both services are available 24 hours a day and they usually take no more than 10 minutes to arrive. Rates are very reasonable depending, obviously, on where you’re headed.

Red Cab 508-792-9999 worcredcab.comYellow Cab 508-754-3211 yellowcabworcester.com

In the Fitchburg and Gardner area, two cab companies offer 24-hour service, especially helpful after busses stop running.
