Building a table and chair set is usually adiffieult procedure. Traditional design <'311;for joining curved and angled part" withmany variations or meruse and tenon ordowel joint..s,

We came up with ;ll,,,,. ta.'Cing techniquefor this kid's table and cl!air set. It 11,,,,,"str,ught cut.<and lap joint.,.

CHAIR SIDE fRAMES

1 started by making the chairs. (The tableis shown in the next article.) each clutirconsists uf two side frames. Btlgin by ripping' the leg uprights (A,B) ruld the rails(C) 2" wide from ,V4 ('y,,*) stock. Thencut them to length ail shown in Fig. I,

IfA1.f' LAPS. These pieces an> juint'" withhalf·laps to form the side fromes. Istartedby cutting end laps at the three cornerswhere t.he rdl'is meet the uprights.SIIOI}LI)ER CUT.When cutting half-laps.

the shoulder cut is made first, This cut detennines the length and depth uf the lapand ensures that. yuu will have a clean«IUaTe sh,,"lrl~r.

SIIOI}LI)ER LF.NGTlI.To set up the cut, lock the rip fenre in place so the distancefrom the fenoo to the o"L$id~of the bladeequals the width of the stock being lapped(2" in this case). see l'1g. 2.

BLADE lIRlGHT. Next, the blade heightis set to eut, 11.1)[ way through the stock. When making the cheek cut. the blade wmcut into this kerf and leave" square corner.

MAKE SHOULDER C\,'TS.When the sawl.set UI), make the shoulder cuts on both~nd"of the front upright.< (8) and the rails(C), but on only one cnd (th~ bottom end)of the back uprights (A).Shop Note. It's tempting at this point to

form the lap joints hy l'Ontinuing to makemultiple pssses over the saw blade. (Thisis bow Iusually form tenons.) But the $8\\blade will leave a series of score mark.. \hatwill be visible at !.he edges of the (m••hedjoint, Instead, I used U tenon jig.

CHEEK CUT. The cheek Cut determinesthe finished thickness of the lap joint. Tomake this cut, I used a tenon jig that slidesover the top of the table saw fence, seePig. a. (For details on how to build thistenon jig, >'00 WOtxi>:",nth No. 24.)Fin;t, set the height of the sawblsde >\0

it C11t.~ into the kerf of the shoulder cut. Then adjust the tenon jig (by moving thef~ in and out) to set the thickness of thelap. Now cut the ends of two scrap piecesand hold them together to check the aecuracy of the cut. When !.hey meet perfectly, make the cheek cuts on the chairr,ul, and uprigbt.s,

C£NTtR LAP JOINT

After fini.'<hingthe end laps, I made the lapjoint in the center of the back upright (A).This requires a two-step technique withthe table saw and a router.

SHOULD&R CIJ1'S, The shoulder <'\lIS forthis center joint are made on the table sa"by using an auxiliary Ienee on the mitergauge, see t'ig. 4.sror- BI-OCK. To establish the first

Moulder (I.owurd the top of the upright).clamp a stop block to the auxiliary fence SOthe distance from the block to the side ofthe saw blade toward the rip fence is I:!'.

Shop Note. Since lhe shoulder on thefront upright (8) has to align with theshoulder on the back upright. you can usethe front upright as a !l'"uge. The distancefrom the slop blQCkto the opposite side ofth~ blade ~hould be the same a.< the lengthof the front UI)right (12").

S&T RIP f'llNCt:. The rip fence acts ..., astop to set the second (oottAlm) shoulder ofthis joint. Set the fence l()" from the 0111·sid« of the sawblade, see Pig. I. (This aJ·lows 'Z' for the hlp joint. and S'" for theupper se<.tion of the uprighl.)

MAKE CUTS. Now make tbe shouldercuts on the back uprights (AI. Then 1.0complete the cuts. 1cleaned out the wastebetween the kerfs with Q '/:" straii(ht bitin the router. see F'ig. 5.

TAPER ISACK UPRIGHTS

Before a.-sembling th~ pieces to make theside frallK's. n taper is cut at the lop of thebaek uprights (AI. Note: The uprights havebeen identical up to this point. But now youhave 1.0 make sure the taper il; cut on thefront edge of the upright.

L.AYTHEM OUT.To do this. dry-assemblethe side frames and lay them down asshown in Fig. 7. Note: Yau want 10 l<tythemunell down so the rails (e) Cn)tl.. U''<'1' theuprights on the "in.idc·' fll('(!. ('fhi.< is I"'~aUy just for appearance - the ullrii(htsshould look like they extend 1.0 the floor onthe -ou~d."of the frames. I

MARKTAPER. Now draw lines to indicaw the taper eet, The taper starts 4' downfrom the lop and ends at the top end, leaving the top 1'4' wide, """ Fig. 6.

MARK CEl'<"l'ElUJNE. Al"O. draw a linepar.illel to the taper line and back Y,". _Fig. G. (This line is used tater to align theboles for the connecter serews.)TAPeRcur. After marking out the lines,

I cut the taper on a band >;3W and planedthe cut edge smooth, Then to eomplete thetAlp, I rounded the lop corners tAl a It,"radius. see F'ig. 6.

A.."5EMBLY. Now all the pieces can beglUL'(l and clamped 10 fonn the frames. After the glue is dry. round the threecomers 10 a 1" radius. see Fig. 7. Tbenround over aU the edges with a y, roundnver bit in the router table.

LEG UNITS

After the desktop assembly L<complete, work can begin on the leg>;. The legs arec.shaped units thai consist of an uprightjoined between a horizontal arm and a foot,

ARMS AND fEET

The four arms and feet (I) are identical.Eath one is mnde by laminating two piecesof 414 ('0/".' thick) stock together, seeFig. 6. Begin by cutting eighl pieces 5Ytwide and the same length as the depth orthe top assembly (2:)'t." in my ease) .

MORTISE. Before gluing the pieces to,,-ether. ICUl recesses 011 t~ ilJJ<ideface ofeach piece. (The recesses form a mortisewhen the pieces are gluecl see Detail inFig. 6.l I cut the recess in two "lCPS.

DEFINE SIDES. First, I made two"toppe<1cuts on the table saw to define thesides of the recess, To do this. raise theblade to a height of '1'':. Then set the "I'relll'Ol so th~re's 1'•• belll!t"f"/l the blade andthe fenct', see Dewil A in ~'ig. 7.

To prevent the blade from going all the\~ay across the width of the workpiece (youwam, a recess, not a dado), clamp a "topblock to the rip fenee. It's clamped 4Vo"back from the point where the blade entersthe table. see fig. 7.

MAK£TIlE CUTS.Onee the saw is set up.use the miter gauge to support the workpiece and make stopped cuts in fouramvfool pieces only. (Note: The other fourpieces are ('Ill later.)To cut the other side of the recess on the

same four pieces, move the fence so theQltUide of the blade L•. , v." from the fence.see Uetail R in Pig. 7.

SECONDSET. Now. to make the mirrored cut on the other four pieces, movethe rip fence to the kfl of the saw blade.set up the stop block on the other side ofthe fence, 3IId repeat the same procedure.(Note: If the rip fence on your saw won'tmove to the left of the blade, clamp a 2:x4to the saw table as a temporary renee.)

ROUTOUTEXCESS.After the sides of therecess are defined with the sa" kern. theoext step is to rout out the inside to actually form the recess. I did this freehand\lith a router alld a v." straight bit set tothe same depth ...s the saw kerf (1'''' deep),see Fig, 8.Tu complete the l1!<JI!s.. I used a chisel

1<, clean orr the tittle "ledge" Odt by thesaw blade cui), see Fig. 9.

GLUE TOGEnl&R "lEees. Once therecesses are complete, glue the matchingpieces together with the OOg>l!l flu.O<h so lberecesses form a mortise.CUTTAPER.After the glue dries. I cut

a long taper off the tap edge Or lbe footand the bottom edge of the arms. To dothis. J used a shopmade taper jig on thet.ab!e saw, see ~'ig. 10. (For more on thisjig, see Shop NOlA1S, page 23.)

puter didn't quite keep. If anythillg, it justmade it ea:<ier and fa:;ter to print evenmure letters, documents, and sheets Ml ofnumbers nobody understands. The fact is, a printer has become an es

senual addition to any eemputer, So. I decided to build a printer sUJ.nd to match mynew computer desk.

This printer stand stores fan-fold computer paper in a drawer under the tQP, andit has a ,;peciaI AAt>lfin lbe back tAl restaeklbt> paper 3,< it comes out. It also has alower shelf for storing refertlll1!books.

TOP AND BASE SHElF

r started by buiklinA' the top (A) and lower~helf(8) for the .UInd. To begin, cui bothpieces 23" long out of 0/,' plywood. Then cut the top (A) 14""'. "ide 001<1

the base shelf (S) 15·11," wide. (The top isnarrower to allow for lhe hinge and backshelf which are added IlII.{!r.)

EDeING PIECES. Next. rip three edgingpieces from 414 SOlid stoek. These piecesare a IYi·wide top front strip CCl, 3y,.°·"ide base front (D). and 117"·wide baseback (E), see Fig. L All pieces lire zr long.

JOINTS. 'Ihese three edging pieces arejoined to the plywood top (Al and baseshelf (B) with tongue and groove ioints. Tomake these jOints, begin by ploughing ay. x 'I,groove on a test piece.

TONGUES.Then cut rabbets on the twoplywood pieces to produce tongue.< to fitthe groove in th~ test piece. Note: On thetop, there's a tongue on the front edg...only. The back edge remains square, Thebase shelf has Wng\le5 on both lodges.

GROOVES. Now lhe grooves ean be CUIon lh" edging pieces, On the two fronlpieces (C and D), position the groeve sothe edging sticks up '1,,,," from the surf .. ",of the plywood. (It will be planed flushhuer. See Shop Not.es. page 23.)

On the base back piece tE), the grooveis. located directly OCri"'-" from lb. gt'OO\'.in the base front (D).

PAPER SLOT

In order to be useful, th" top ba.~w havea .Iot so the paper can feed up frombelo".The location for litis slot depends on wherethe slot on your printer is located.SLOT POSITION. To IlOSition the slot,

place the printer on the top so it's centeredfront to back and sideways. Then, mark 0line to indicate the center of the printer'spaper feed slot, Measure out 1'/. on bolbsides of thi.- line to lay out 3 2V,··wideslot, see Fig. 1.
