January 1: Inca Son

Come celebrate the New Year with the freshness and magic of music from the High Andes of Peru. Clad in colorful costumes, Inca Son performs both traditional and original songs on panpipes, flutes, guitars, drums, rattles, and animal horns. Under the leadership of Cesar Villalobos, this family band has achieved wide recognition by presenting full-scale costumed stage productions at fes-tivals and concert halls throughout America. They have performed at the White House, the United Na-tions, and the Olympics, and also provided the soundtrack for the PBS

series “Columbus and the Age of Discovery.” In 2003, Mr. Villalobos was presented with the Order of Merit “for distinguished service” by President Alejandro Toledo of Peru, and local and international awards for their concerts and educational programs have been piling up ever since. We look forward to an evening of vibrant sounds and colors from these cultural ambassadors of the Andes.

Blues musician Les Sampou got her start in the Boston folk scene, promoted early on by WHFMS founder Dick Pleasants, and quickly moved on to national prominence and acclaim. Now back on the roots scene after a long break, we’re thrilled to have her in Woods Hole again. Les is known for her mature, expressive voice, powerful picking and slide guitar, sharply observant original songs, and an ability to bring blues classics to life. As one reviewer said, “She has a passionate, rockabilly-blues edge that lifts your spirits high, followed by ballads that dig into your soul like few artists can.” Her new album, “Lonesomeville,” has found its way to top 10 lists across the country, expanding the scope of previous recordings with a backing band and rough-edged, rock-tempered Americana. But this will be a solo acoustic performance focused on the soulful blues at the core of her repertoire. Welcome back, Les!

January 29: Bill Staines There is little to say about Bill Staines that

most WHFMS members have not heard. But this year is a big one, as we celebrate the 40th season of WHFMS and the 40th concert by our beloved New England Cowboy. His perfect record stands! We’ll hope for decent weather, though Bill has played during downpours, howling gales, near-blizzards and the Super Bowl. So why do we keep coming back to listen, bringing our children and their children? It’s not just his songs, which speak so poignantly of bygone eras, the vastness of the American wilderness, the humor in life and the sweetness of love. It’s not just the choruses, so easy to sing that you find yourself joining in without thinking. It’s not just his warm voice, unique left-handed guitar accompaniment, yo-deling, trombone imitations, hilarious tales and recitations. It’s the man himself, the way he builds community and welcomes us all. Be there.
