The Billikens have captured wins in four of their last five games, while the Bonnies have catapulted into second place in the A-10 by winning seven straight decisions, the league’s longest current streak. SERIES HISTORY The Bonnies lead the Billikens 7-2 in the all-me series and own a five-game series winning streak, including a 62-60 victory Jan. 18 in Olean, N.Y. BILLIKEN LEADERS Erin Nelson carries a team-high 13.4 scoring average, and Desirae Ball ranks second with a 12.1 points-per-game mark. Denisha Womack is third with 8.5 ppg, followed by Jamesia Price (7.5 ppg), Sadie Spanovich (7.3 ppg) and Olivia Jakubicek (6.3 ppg). Spanovich (6.6 rpg) and Womack (6.5 rpg) are baling for the SLU rebounding lead, and Jakubicek averages 5.7 boards. BILLS TASTE TOURNAMENT SUCCESS – With a victory over Butler in the 2013 A-10Championship, the Billikens have won aconference tournament first-round game inconsecutive seasons for the first time as amemberoftheA-10.SLUdownedCharlotteinthefirstroundin2012.

CONQUERING THE ROAD–TheBillikenswonsixroadgameslastyear,twiceasmanyastheprevious twoseasons combined. SLUhad sixroadwinsforthefirsttimein27years.

BUILDING A DEFENSIVE FOUNDATION – Saint Louis turned in several impressive defensiveaccomplishmentsduringthe2012-13season.Herearesomehighlights:

•TheBillikenspostedtheirbest-everscoringdefense numbers as an A-10member. In allgames,SLUallowedanaverageof57.9points–9.2pointsfewerthantheprogram’saverageof 67.1 points per game allowed in its firstseven years in the A-10. The numbers wereeven better in conference games only, withtheBillikensallowinganaverageof58.6pointscompared to 68.4 over the previous sevenyears–adifferenceof9.8.

•SLUallowedanaverageoffewerthan60points per game for the first time since the1985-86 season.

•TheBillsheld11opponentstofewerthan50 points, a school record. Six of those 11gameswereagainstA-10opponents. Innon-conference play, SLU allowed fewer than 50pointsinfiveconsecutivegames,thefirsttimeinprogramhistorythathashappened.

•SLUaveragedjust13.9fouls(34thinthenation)andalloweditsopponentsanaverageofonly12.1free-throwattemptspergame.

Head Coach Lisa Stone

Lisa Stone, who has amassed a 524-270recordin28yearsasacollegiateheadcoach,is in her second season as head women’sbasketballcoachatSaintLouisUniversity.

Saint Louis’ 12-19 record in Stone’s firstcampaign belied the team’s competitivenessasnineoftheBillikens’losses,includingfourinAtlantic10Conferenceplay,werebysevenorfewerpoints.Defensewas the team’s callingcard, with SLU allowing an average of fewerthan 60 points per game (57.9) for the firsttime since the 1985-86 season. The Billikensheld11opponentstofewerthan50points,aschoolrecord;sixofthose11opponentswereA-10foes.

Saint Louis qualified for the A-10Championship as theNo. 11 seed andupsetNo.6Butlerinthefirstround.Inaddition,theBillikenswonsixroadgames,twiceasmanyastheprevioustwoseasonscombined.Itwasthefirst time since the 1985-86 season that SLUrecordedsixroadvictories.

Prior to her arrival at Saint Louis, Stoneserved eight seasons (2003-11) in charge atWisconsin. She began her head-coachingcareerwithathree-yearstintatCornell(Iowa)College, spent 12 seasons at Wisconsin-EauClaireandhadathree-yeartenureatDrake.

“WearethrilledtohaveLisaandherfamilyjoin the Saint Louis University community,”Director of Athletics Chris May said uponStone’s hiring in May 2012. “Her successfulcareer, which includes a commitment toacademicsuccessandwinningatevery level,speaksforitself.

StoneguidedWisconsintofivepostseasonappearances, two 20-win campaigns and a128-119 record that included a 95-68 markinherfinalfiveseasons.Inherfourthseason(2006-07), the Badgers won a school-record23games (23-13)andfinishedsecond in theWNIT.

FollowingWNITappearances thenext twoseasons, Wisconsin’s 2009-10 squad posteda 21-11 record, tied for third in the Big TenConferenceandearnedanNCAATournamentbid. Stone was rewarded by being namedBigTenCoachoftheYear.TheBadgersagaintied for third in the Big Ten in 2010-11 andparticipatedintheWNIT.

Wisconsin also excelled academicallywith Stone at the helm. Twenty-one playerscombined to earn 42 Academic All-Big Tennodsduringhertenure.

Stone’s 64-27 record at Drake includeda 42-12 Missouri Valley Conference ledger.She led the Bulldogs to a 23-7 record, anMVCregular-seasonco-championshipandanNCAA Tournament berth in her first season(2000-01).Stone,whose23victorieswerethemostbyafirst-yearMVCwomen’sbasketballcoach,wastabbedthe league’sCoachof theYear.Thefollowingseason,Stone’steamwent25-8,achievedaNo.20nationalrankingandreachedtheNCAATournamentSweet16.

The Drake program also flourished in theclassroomunderStone’sleadership.The2000-01BulldogswererankedsixthontheWomen’sBasketballCoachesAssociation’sAcademicTop25HonorRoll,andthe2001-02teamgarneredaNo.15rankingontheprestigiouslist.

At NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Eau Claire,Stone turned around a program that hadregisteredjustonewinningrecordpriortoherarrival.Herteamstallieda277-59mark(159-33 in conference play), turned in 11 20-winseasons, reached the NCAA Tournament 11timesandcapturedsixleaguecrowns.

Stone’s 1996-97 squad was the nationalrunner-up, and her 1993-94 team finishedthirdinthenation.Shewaschosenthe1997WBCADivisionIIINationalCoachoftheYear,andin2000shewasnamedD3News/MoltenDivision IIINationalCoachof theYearas theBlugolds posted a 28-1 record. A five-timeWisconsin IntercollegiateAthleticConferenceCoachoftheYear,StonewasinductedintotheUW-EauClaireBlugoldHallofFamein2006.

Stone’saccomplishmentsatUW-EauClaireled toher selection to the inaugural classoftheWIACHallofFame.Additionally,shewasnamedtheWIACWomen’sBasketballAll-TimeCo-Coach.

When Stone was named head coach atDivision IIICornellCollegeatage22 in1985,shewasthenation’syoungestheadbasketballcoachatafour-yearinstitution.Shecollecteda34-32recordatCornellandledtheRamstotheMidwest Conference’s Southern Divisiontitle in each of her three years. Stone alsoservedastheRams’headsoftballcoach.

In addition to her collegiate coachingexperience,Stonewasaheadcoachinthe2001WBCA All-Star Game as well as an assistantcoachforgold-medal-winningTeamUSAatthe2002WorldChampionshipsforYoungWomenQualifyingTournamentinBrazil.

Stoneholdsabachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducation (1984) and a master’s degree inathleticadministration(1986),bothfromtheUniversity of Iowa. A four-year standout atpoint guard under legendary head coach C.Vivian Stringer, she is 26th in points (1,129),tiedforninthinsteals(177)and12thinassists(322) on the Iowa career charts. Stone alsoowns a share of the Hawkeyes’ record forstealsinagame(nine).

Stone,anativeofOregon,Wis.,wasathree-time team captain and a two-time HawkeyeMost Valuable Player. As a senior, she wontheBigTenMedalofHonorasoneofthetopscholar-athletes in the conference and alsocapturedtheIowaStudent-AthleteoftheYearaward.

Stoneandherhusband,Ed,acertifiedpublicaccountant, are the parents of a daughter,Allison,andason,Tyler.Allie isa seniorandamember of the soccer team atWisconsin-EauClaire,andTylerisinhisfreshmanyearatSLU.

Mike Geary, who owns 417 wins as acollegiatewomen’sbasketballheadcoach,isinhisfirstseasonasanassistantcoachatSaintLouisUniversity.GearyarrivedatSaintLouis in June2013 following four seasonsas an assistant coach at theUniversity ofDetroitMercy.

“I am so very pleased and excited towelcome Mike Geary to my staff,” headcoach Lisa Stone said. “Mike has a .758

winningpercentageandmorethan400victoriesasaheadcoach,andhehasbeeninstrumentalinturningprogramsaroundandleadingteamstopostseasonplay.Hisexperience,energyandwinningrecordwillhelpuscontinuetobuildachampionshipprogram.

“Mike is highly accomplished at X’s and O’s, practice preparationand game strategy,” Stone said. “He has developed numerous All-Conferenceplayersandimplementedeffectivein-seasonandoff-seasonplayerprograms.Mikealsoisanoutstandingrecruiterandisverywell-connected in theMidwest. He is respected throughout the coachingprofession.”

GearyhelpedDetroitMercyposta21-13recordandwintheWomen’sBasketball Invitational in 2012-13. That followed a 2011-12 campaignthat saw the Titans go 20-14 and earn a WNIT bid. During Geary’stenure,DetroitMercyimproveditsNCAARatingsPercentageIndex(RPI)from220to97.

GearyspenttwoseasonsasanassistantcoachatBallStateUniversity.He helped guide the 2006-07 Cardinals to a 24-7 ledger, the Mid-AmericanConferenceWestDivisiontitleandaWNITberth.

Geary enjoyed considerable success as a head coach at the NCAADivisionIIlevel.HeledLakeSuperiorStatetothe1988NCAATournamentroundof16inhissecondseason,andtheLakerswere47-10inhistwocampaignsatthehelm.Gearythenembarkedonastellar17-yearstintat Northern Michigan, where his teams compiled a 370-123 recordandenjoyed12seasons,includingeightinsuccession,with20ormorevictories.

GearytookoveraNorthernMichiganprogramthatwas9-18theyearbeforeandproduceda24-4slatein1988-89.TheWildcatsbecamethefirstNMUwomen’sbasketball teamtoplay in theNCAATournament,thefirstof11nationaltournamentappearancesunderGeary’sdirection.HewasnamedGreatLakesIntercollegiateAthleticConference(GLIAC)CoachoftheYear.

NorthernMichiganreachedtheNCAATournamentEliteEight(nationalquarterfinals)in1996andadvancedtothenationalsemifinalsin1998.The1997-98 teamwona school-record28games (28-4)and reachedNo.3inthenationalrankings.The1996-97Wildcatswereundefeatedinconferenceplayandturnedinthebestwinningpercentage(.900,27-3)in program history, accomplishments that led to Geary’s selection asCoachoftheYearbytheGLIACandtheBasketballCoachesAssociationofMichigan.

Geary’sNorthernMichiganteamscapturedsevenGLIACTournamentcrowns, including four consecutive from1995 to 1998, and played insevenNCAAregionalchampionshipgames.HisplayersearnedfiveAll-AmericaawardsandsixGLIACMostValuablePlayerhonors.

Geary is a1979graduateofAquinasCollege (GrandRapids,Mich.)withabachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducation.HemarriedtheformerEmilySamuelsoninthesummerof2012.Gearyhastwosons,SeanandTyler.

PriortocoachingatLee’sSummitWestlastseason,Guffeyspentfouryears as anassistant coachatWichita State. Servingas the Shockers’recruitingcoordinator,shesignedafirst-yearclassoffourfreshmenandfourtransfersthatwasranked42ndinthenation.Onthecourt,GuffeywasresponsibleforthedevelopmentoftheShockers’postplayers.

Guffey signed players who earned Missouri Valley All-Conference,Defensive Player of the Year andAll-Freshman accolades. She helpedWichita Statemake three consecutive postseason appearances (2010WBI, 2011 and 2012 WNIT); the Shockers captured their first-everpostseasonvictoryinthe2010WBI.

Also during Guffey’s tenure, Wichita State garnered the first Mid-MajorTop25nationalrankinginprogramhistory,setaschoolrecordforhomewins,registeredtheprogram’shighestMVCvictorytotalinmorethanadecade,andearnedaplaceontheWomen’sBasketballCoachesAssociation’sAcademicTop25TeamHonorRoll.

In one season as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach atMissouriState,GuffeysignedplayerswhowouldgoontocollectMVCPlayeroftheYearplauditsin2010andtheleague’sFreshmanoftheYearrecognitionin2008.

Guffey’sexperiencealsoincludesthreeyearseachasheadcoachatFortScott(Kan.)CommunityCollegeandNotreDamedeSionCollegePrep in Kansas City,Mo. Guffey’s teams at both schools set programmarksforwinningpercentage,andherNotreDamedeSionsquadwonconsecutive state championships. Shewas selected 2000-01MissouriHighSchoolBasketballCoachoftheYear.

Guffey is a 1997 graduate of Missouri Valley College, earning abachelor’s degree in education. Shewas a four-year basketball letterwinnerfortheVikings.Guffeyalsoholdsamaster’sdegreeineducationfromMid-AmericaNazareneUniversity(2000).

Assistant coach Linda Sayavongchanhjoined the Billiken staff in June 2013.Sayavongchanh,whoarrivedatSaintLouisfollowingoneseasonasassistantcoach/co-recruiting coordinator at the University ofNorthDakota,isresponsiblefordevelopingthe Billikens’ perimeter players, scoutingandgamepreparation,recruiting,academiccoordinationandsummercamps.

“It is my pleasure to welcome LindaSayavongchanhtomystaffandtoourBilliken family,”headcoachLisaStone said. “I have known Linda for 11 years as a player, coach andrecruiter. I recruited and coached her while serving as head coach atDrakeUniversity.ShewasoneofthefinestpointguardsintheMissouriValleyConferenceandwasinstrumentalinoursuccess.

“Lindahasbeeninthecoachingrealmforsevenyearsandisregardedas a rising star in theprofession,” Stone said. “Shehas greatMidwestrecruiting connections thatwill help us continue to build a successfulprogram.

PriortoherstintatNorthDakota,SayavongchanhservedthreeyearsasanassistantcoachatDrake.Inherfinalseason,the2011-12campaign,the Bulldogs were runners-up in the MVC Tournament and earned aWNITbid.

SayavongchanhspenttwoseasonsasagraduateassistantcoachattheUniversityofMinnesotaDuluthandoneyearasastudentassistantcoachatDrake.ShehasbeenDrake’ssummerbasketballcampco-directorsince2009andalsohasassistedattheMinnesotaDuluthcamp.

Sayavongchanh was a four-year letter winner and two-year teamcaptainatDrake.ShewasAll-ConferencehonorablementionandanMVCAll-Defensiveselectionineachofherfourseasons,andshewasnamedtothe2004MVCAll-Tournamentteam.SayavongchanhhelpedleadtheBulldogstoWNITappearancesin2004and2006.

Sayavongchanh holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education,with endorsements inmathematics and coaching, from Drake (2007).Sheearnedamaster’sdegreeineducationatMinnesotaDuluthin2009.

TheBillikenwasbornOct.8,1908,whenKansasCityartteacherandillustratorFlorencePretzpatentedadesign foranelflikecreaturewithpixieears,amischievoussmileanda tuftofhaironhispointedhead.Reportedly,theimagecametoherinadream.

Although it didn’t appear on the actual patent, some believe PretzfoundtheBillikennameinafancifulworkentitled,“Mr.Moon:ASongoftheLittlePeople,”byCanadianpoetsBlissCarmanandRichardHovey.

Within a short time, Pretz sold her patented image to the BillikenCompany of Chicago. Initially manufactured as a bank and statuette,andlaterasadoll,thisgoodluckcharmsoonbecameanationalcraze.By 1911, theBilliken’s likeness adornedeverything frommarshmallowcandiestohoodornaments.

Inhisheyday,theBillikenenjoyedworldwidefame.ArtisansinAlaskabegancarvinghisimageintoivory,andinJapan,heappearedinshrines,amusementparksandevenamovie.

Likemanyother fads, theBillikenmighthave faded intoobscurity ifitwerenotforSaintLouisUniversitylawstudentJohnBender,whoalsohappened tobe thecoachof SLU’s football teamduring theheightofBillikenmania.

One story claims that nearby drugstore owner Billy Gunn calledBenderaBillikenwhenthecoachwalkedintohisestablishmentoneday.Supposedly,legendarysportswriterWilliamO’ConnorwaswithinearshotoftheremarkandtookupthemonikernotonlyforBenderbutalsoforSLU’ssportsteams.

Another tale claims O’Connor himself dubbed the coach a BillikenafteraparticularlygoodpracticeleftBenderbeamingwithabigsmile.Afterpractice,Bender’sfellowlawstudentCharlesZ.McNamara,alocalcartoonist,sketchedBenderasaBilliken,postedit inGunn’sdrugstorewindowandtabbedthefootballteam“Bender’sBillikens.”

YetanotheryarnreportsthatthedruggistaskedMcNamaratodecoratehis store window the night before a homecoming game. Supposedly,McNamaradrewaBilliken,apopulargoodluckcharm,causingoneofhisfellowstudentstoexclaim,“ThatlookslikecoachBender!”

Whateverthecase,O’Connorisgenerallycreditedforpopularizingthenamethroughoutthecity,butonefactfliesinthefaceofthislegendandlore.O’ConnordidnotjointheSt. Louis Post-DispatchuntilNov.26,1911,onefullmonthafterthenewspaperfirstmentioned“Bender’sBillikens.”

Regardlessofhowthestoryistoldorwhetherhismysteriousoriginsareeverfinallyresolved,theBillikenremainsagoodluckcharmforSaintLouisUniversity’ssportsteamsandalwaysbringssmilestothefacesofSLUfans.LegendhasitthattheBillikenhasthreekindsofluck–good,betterandbest.BuyingaBillikengivesthebuyergoodluck.Tohaveonegiventoyouisbetterluck.ThebestluckcomesiftheBillikenisstolen.
