WINNING WAYSVCU has recorded a winning record in eight of the past nine seasons, including a 16-14 mark in 2014-15. The Rams have made six postseason appearances during that span, an NCAA bid in 2009, and WNIT berths in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

NEW TO YOUA pair of transfers will be eligible for the Rams this season. Junior Galaisha “GG” Goodhope joins VCU from Old Dominion. The 5-5 guard averaged 8.1 points and a team-high 3.6 assists for the Lady Monarchs in 2013-14 before sitting out last season. She was named to the CAA’s All-Rookie Team in 2013. She will be eligible in the second semester. In addition, Jessica Ogunnorin will be im-mediately eligible for VCU as a graduate transfer from Stony Brook. Ogunnorin played under VCU Coach Beth O’Boyle at Stony Brook in 2013-14. She averaged 7.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season for the Seawolves and was named to the America East Conference’s All-Defensive and All-Academic Teams.

ACES FOR ADAEZESenior G/F Adaeze Alaeze has been named All-Atlantic 10 Preseason Third Team. The 5-foot-10 Baltimore native av-eraged career-highs in both points (10.2 ppg) and rebounds (6.9 rpg) last season and was named All-Atlantic 10 Third Team for her efforts. She led VCU in rebounds and assists in 2014-15 and ranked sec-ond in scoring.

THORPE’S THREESJunior guard Isis Thorpe needs 36 three-pointers to become VCU’s career leader. She knocked down 63 triples in 2014-15 and 74 as a freshman in 2013-14. Thorpe ranked sixth in the A-10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.404) last season.

SWAT TALKSenior center Melanie Royster ranked third in the league last season with 2.2

blocks per game, most by a Ram since Quanitra Hollingsworth in 2005-06. Roys-ter blocked 64 shots in 2014-15, third most in school single season history. She is currently fifth on VCU’s career list.

Blocked Shots (Career)1. Svetlana Pankatova (1992-95) 1762. Kristina Cesnaviciute (2001-05) 1673. Quanitra Hollingsworth (2005-09) 1624. Mona Karlsson (1995-99) 1565. Melanie Royster (2011-present) 106

SWAT 2.0Behind Royster’s lead, VCU set a program record with 137 blocked shots in 2014-15. In addition to Royster’s 64, Camille Calhoun (19), Adaeze Alaeze (18) and Isis Thorpe (11) also made it a point to dish out rejections.

REMEMBERING SONIA JOHNSONThe VCU Women’s Basketball program was saddened to learn of the passing of former Rams’ standout Sonia Johnson this week. She was 25 years old.

Johnson played for VCU in 2010-11 after transferring from Patrick Henry Commu-nity College. A Newport News native, Johnson averaged 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Rams that season. VCU finished 19-12 and reached the first round of the WNIT.

RAMS SIGN FOURVCU added four recruits during the NCAA’s Early Signing Period in Novem-ber.

Guards Jailyn Maddox (Hoover, Ala./Hoover), Nyra Williams (Hampton, Va./Bethel) and Niya Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth), as well as center Dan-ielle Hammond (Philadelphia, Pa./Bald-win School) will join VCU in 2016.

Beth O’Boyle became the 13th head coach in VCU Women’s Basketball history on April 29, 2014. In her first season at the helm she led the Rams to 16 wins, marking the eighth time in the past nine seasons that VCU has posted a winning record. Six of those nine years have resulted in postseason trips for the Black & Gold. O’Boyle assumed the reigns at VCU after she led Stony Brook to a remarkable turnaround in three seasons on Long Island. The Seawolves improved by 10 wins in each of the last two seasons, including the 2013-14 campaign, when O’Boyle guided the club to a school Division I record 24 wins (24-9), and a WNIT bid, the program’s first postseason appearance since 2006. Stony Brook reached the America East Championship Game that season, the school’s first appearance in the final since 2001-02. O’Boyle was also pivotal in the development of 2014 America East Defensive Player of the Year Chikilra Goodman. In 2012-13, Stony Brook’s 10-win turnaround was the seventh-best in the country. O’Boyle was 42-51 overall in three seasons with the Seawolves. During O’Boyle’s tenure, Stony Brook was known for its stout defense. In each of her three seasons, the Seawolves ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense. In 2013-14, SBU allowed just 60.5 points per game, the 45th-best mark in the country. The Seawolves also ranked 20th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.7).

Prior to guiding the Stony Brook program, O’Boyle spent four seasons as an assistant at Canisius. She helped steer the program to its best season in 2008-09, when the Golden Griffins won 24 games and advanced to the MAAC Championship Game. Canisius also received a WNIT bid for the first time in program history. Hired as an assistant coach at Canisius in 2007, O’Boyle was elevated to associate head coach in November 2009. Responsi-ble for all recruiting activities, as well the development of the Golden Griffin guards, O’Boyle coached seven All-Conference players at Canisius, including 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Year Brittane Russell, 2009 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year Ellie Radke and 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year Jamie Ruttle. O’Boyle has also shown a commitment to developing the total student-athlete. Dani Klupenger earned America East All-Academic status in 2012-13 for her work on the court and in the classroom. At Canisius, she monitored the academic prog-ress of a Golden Griffins team that was recognized in the NCAA Top 25 for team grade point average. In total, Canisius has had 18 selections to the MAAC All-Academic team since O’Boyle’s arrival, including Marie Warner, who was also named a ESPN the Magazine third-team Academic All-American in 2009. O’Boyle came to Canisius after serving as the head coach at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., for three seasons. O’Boyle led the Red Hawks to the ECAC Division III Metro Wom-en’s Basketball Championship in 2006-07 and was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year following the 2005-06 season. She compiled a 51-33 record in her three seasons there, and the Red Hawks also produced their first All-American in 15 seasons under O’Boyle’s guidance. Prior to taking over at Montclair State, O’Boyle spent four seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the Uni-versity of Rochester. During her first two seasons, Rochester won back-to-back ECAC Upstate New York championships and in her last two seasons, the team made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 2004, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for a three-week period according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCADivision III poll and the D3hoops.com poll. A 1998 graduate of Gettysburg College, O’Boyle earned four letters with the basketball and soccer programs at Gettysburg and served as a two-time captain in each sport. O’Boyle earned her master’s degree from the Rochester’s Warner School of Edu-cation in 2001. O’Boyle is a native of Rockville, Md., and attended the Academy of the Holy Cross High School in Kensington, Md.
