ON TAP Looking to build on the momentum of a huge 95-50 win over UC Irvine on Saturday, the Lions continue a stretch of three consecutive Big West Conference opponents Tuesday, Dec. 1, traveling to face UC Riverside at 7 p.m. LIONS’ LAST LINE Behind a career-high 23 points from freshman Cheyanne Wallace and a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double by senior Sophie Taylor, the Lions closed out play at the 2015 LMU Thanksgiving Classic with a dominating 95-50 win over UC Irvine Saturday at Gersten Pavilion. For the second straight game, the third quarter keyed a big run by the Lions. But this time, LMU continued the run into the fourth quarter, pulling away from the Anteaters for the 45-point win. COACH’S COMMENTS - LMU VS UC IRVINE “I told them at halftime, shooting is contagious,” said Head Coach Charity Elliott. “We’ve got to start hitting some shots and everybody will start hitting shots. We had two really, really big runs in the second half where we just weren’t messing around, we were really playing together and it got contagious. Today was a huge step for our team. We saw what we can do and we saw momentum that we can build on. We have a lot of weapons and we’re still just trying to figure out how all the pieces are going to work together.” PUTTING UP POINTS LMU’s 95-point effort in Saturday’s win over UC Irvine ties for the fourth most points in school history. The all-time record is 130 points, scored in a 130-52 win over The Master’s College on Nov. 23, 1990. The highest output during Head Coach Charity Elliott’s three-plus year tenure is 98, set in a 98-81 victory over Utah State on Nov. 17, 2012. During Elliott’s time, the Lions have hit the 90-point mark six times. Since the program’s inception in 1981-82, the Lions have scored 90 points or more 22 times. FANTASTIC FRESHMENLMU’s freshman class is beginning to make its presence more and more known as each game passes this 2015-16 season. The five-member class (including redshirt freshman NK Ilang) has earned a combined eight starts and have contributed nearly 40 percent of the team’s minutes played and 40 percent of the team’s scoring. Cheyanne Wallace is second on the team with 13.6 ppg and third with 5.3 rpg while Andee Velasco has dished a team-best 20 assists, including seven in each of the last two games (14 total).

TAYLOR EARNS ALL-TOURNEY HONORSSophie Taylor was named to the All-Tournament Team at last week’s Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The senior guard/forward averaged 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as the Lions went 1-1. She scored nearly half of her points at the free-throw line, going 12-for-16 (75 percent).

TAYLOR NAMED PRESEASON ALL-WCCSenior guard/forward Sophie Taylor earned her first career nod on the Preseason All-WCC Team. In 2014-15, she averaged 11.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg while hitting better than 40-percent from the field and nearly 83-percent from the charity stripe for the Lions. She had 19 double-digit point efforts and four double-doubles. She poured in a career-high 29 points on Feb. 14 against Portland and surpassed the 20-point mark five times.

LMU SELECTED EIGHTH IN PRESEASON WCC COACHES POLLThe WCC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches, has the Lions earning 25 points, good for eighth place. Gonzaga was selected first, including six first-place votes, while reigning WCC Tournament champion BYU was picked second, including four first-place votes.

INSIDE THE LIONSLots of youth and few upperclassmen is once again the makeup of the LMU women’s basketball team as Head Coach Charity Elliott begins her fourth year at the helm of the program. But this year the youth brings experience and a confidence that hasn’t existed before. The 2015-16 squad features just two seniors (Sophie Taylor and Deanna Johnson) and two juniors (Leslie Lopez-Wood and Shelbi Aimonetti) to go along with five sophomores and five freshmen. Taylor (11.7 ppg, 6.2 rpg in 2014-15), Johnson

(13.2 ppg in 2014-15) and Lopez-Wood (13.5 ppg, 82 3’s in 2014-15) provide a solid core of experience and the return of Johnson after missing all but 10 games last year is a huge bonus. Additionally, sophomores Makenzie Cast and Bree Alford return after being forced into lead roles as rookies a year ago. Cast averaged 22 mpg and started 11 games last year while Alford averaged 20.4 mpg, appeared in all 31 games and started 11 times. Cast added an additional scoring threat from the outside, finishing her freshman year with 42 threes, averaging 6.8 ppg and earning a spot on the WCC All-Freshman Team. Alford finished the year as the Lions’ top rebounder at 6.4 per game, including 99 offensive boards. Among the Lion freshmen this year are sisters Andee and Bianca Velasco out of Mater Dei High School, Marcella Hughes from Carondelet High School and Cheyanne Wallace from Sierra Canyon High School.

HEAD COACH CHARITY ELLIOTTThrough three seasons with the Lions, Elliott has compiled a 29-63 overall record, bringing her 13-year career coaching mark to 211-193. Elliott collected her 200th career coaching victory on January 16, 2014, in a 90-84 win at Pacific.

In her first season at the helm of the Lion program Elliott guided LMU to a 13-18 overall record, 6-10 WCC mark and 9-5 record at home in Gersten Pavilion. Playing their best basketball during the home stretch of the season, the 2012-13 Lions earned a huge upset of BYU on senior night and came from behind for a key road victory over San Francisco to clinch the fifth seed in the WCC Championship Tournament.

In 2013-14, Elliott’s Lions went 9-21 and 6-12 in the WCC. A second straight season of earning a sweep of PCH Cup rival Pepperdine, and program records set by Hazel Ramirez (single-season assists, career assists) and Leslie Lopez-Wood (single-season three-pointers) were highlights during a season of transition as new leaders began to find their footing.

Elliott completed a highly successful five-year run with the Division II UC San Diego Tritons in 2011-12, compiling a 127-34 (.789) overall record and 90-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association from 2007-08 through 2011-12. In her final season at UCSD, Elliott led the Tritons to a 30-3 overall record, including going unbeaten in their first 26 games. The team spent seven weeks ranked #1 in NCAA Division II, the first #1 ranking in school history. Elliott capped the season by being named 2012 West Region Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year honor.

During her tenure, Elliott UCSD to three regular-season conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and one Sweet 16 appearance. She also earned three CCAA Coach of the Year honors.

Elliott spent three seasons as the head coach at Portland State where she led the Vikings to a remarkable turnaround during her tenure. After PSU finished with an overall record of 3-23 during her first year in 2004-05, she led the Vikings to a 12-16 overall mark and 6-8 in the Big Sky Conference during her second season. The nine-win improvement ranked amongst the nation’s top 20 and Portland State qualified for the Big Sky Tournament for the first time in three years.

Before taking the Portland State job, Elliott served as an assistant coach at

Arkansas for one season and was the head coach at Cal Baptist for two seasons. She has also served in an assistant capacity with Southwest Baptist, Southwest Missouri State and San Diego State.

In March of 2015, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inducted the Lady Bears’ 1992 Final Four team – the first Division I Missouri basketball program, male or female, to reach a Final Four in the sport’s illustrious history.

PCH CHALLENGESeparated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Challenge. The series, which is in its seventh year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference. LMU and Pepperdine will be represented by over 12 of their intercollegiate athletic teams through both regular and post-season competitions over the course of the academic calendar. Any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur. For the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships. The Waves have won each of the first four competitions. To learn more about the PCH Challenge and view the current scorecard, please visit LMULions.com/trads/PCH-Cup.html.
