Dear Department Chairs, Heads, Directors, and Colleagues: The Faculty Women’s Interest Group (FWIG) of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) is proud to present you with the 2018 edition of a collection of abbreviated CVs of women seeking tenure-earning faculty positions in Urban and Regional Planning. Most of the women appearing in this booklet are new PhD’s or just entering the profession, although some are employed but looking for new positions. Most are seeking tenure-track jobs, although some may consider a one-year, visiting, or non-tenure earning position. These candidates were required to condense their considerable skills, talents, and experience into just two pages. We also forced the candidates to identify their two major areas of interest, expertise, and/or experience, using our categories. The candidates may well have preferred different categories. Please carefully read the brief resumes to see if the candidates meet your needs. We urge you to contact the candidates directly for additional information on what they have to offer your program. On behalf of FWIG we thank you for considering these newest members of our profession. If we can be of any help, please do not hesitate to call on either of us. Sincerely

Dr. Anaid Yerena Dr. Petra Doan Editor, 2018 Resume Book President, FWIG [email protected] Faculty Women’s Interest Group [email protected] [email protected]

400 Avery Hall 1172 Amsterdam Avenue New York, NY 10027 U.S.: +1 609 617 1162 E-mail: [email protected] Websites: www.sophoniejoseph.com My research focuses on issues of decentralization and environmental justice planning in small island developing states (SIDS). I am currently completing a project on how different institutional arrangements affect energy justice and sovereignty in rural Ayiti. This work illustrates how delaying decentralization implementation through gray-spacing of Haitian urbanisme laws upholds a pernicious pattern that has an extensive history dating to Ayiti’s first urbanisme law 1937. I focus on how transnational academic networks and the practices of external, local and hybrid planners reinforce the active importation and negotiated imposition of planning ideas as institutional design dependent upon international aid funding distribution streams in post-disaster contexts. Shruti Syal 608 S State St, Apt 13, Champaign IL 61820 | 217-778-8968 | [email protected]

I am an environmental planner studying how informal built environments can be sustainable, and how planning institutions- especially those involved in infrastructure- are central to this endeavor. My goal is to set up longitudinal research on decentralized ecological infrastructure in informal settlements, partnering with local urban designers, engineers, regulatory agencies and universities.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Dissertation | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign | August 2013 – December 2018

My dissertation discloses the link between stormwater drain-adjacent ‘slums’ in Delhi and a major environmental planning issue- pollution in river Yamuna. I explain the biophysical impact of these settlements versus ‘formal’ land uses upstream along the drains, and flaws in the institutional framework for formal and informal infrastructure provision in these settlements that result in social inequity and environmental degradation. I built a repository of basin, city, and settlement-scale spatial data on ArcGIS from >200 secondary sources, > 100 IRB-approved interviews with settlement residents, NGOs, and municipal agency officials, and detailed water quality monitoring data for a subset of Delhi’s stormwater drains.

My research assistantships ranged from assisting with sequencing and expression of secretion proteins in Arabidopsis, to designing microscopic landscapes to study dispersal and population survival of the protozoa Tetrahymena, to studying how predation cues incite physiological responses that increase toxicity risk in Arabian tadpoles, to delineating the stakeholder network for Canada’s first National Urban Park, and studying what municipal codes of the 50 worst-infested US cities say about mitigating bedbug infestations.
