Womens roles in India have been changing and

women are now emerging from the past

traditions into a new era of freedom and rights.

This concern is not merely academic but is

central to the process of emerging development

    in India.

Women have always been looked at as the care giver and asthe home keeper.

Being the symbol of the family, women have always beenthe home and have not been out in the other arenas of life.

Women have played different roles in the family dependingon their age and place in the household.

When there is a sudden change in society, women havealways stood up to assist and these moments have been

    recorded in history.

One of several factors that justify the greatness of India'sancient culture is the honorable place granted to women.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy started a movement against thedeprivation of women rights, inequality and subjugation.

The contact of Indian culture with that of the British alsobrought improvement in the status of women.

Another factor in the revival of women's position was theinfluence of Mahatma Gandhi who induced women to

    participate in the Freedom Movement.

But in spite of this amelioration in the status of women, theevils of illiteracy, dowry, ignorance, female foeticide andeconomic slavery would have to be fully removed in orderto give them their rightful place in Indian society.

"Women contribute 63 percent to agricultural

production, in their hands lie the welfare of the

whole family and society; they are the keepers of

the commons and the indigenous seed heritage of

the country. Yet, they are almost completely in the

unorganized sector (71%) having no assets or

economic security. Even though Indian economy

is growing at a rate of 9%, 52% of women of the

country suffer from malnutrition; they go hungry

even when the granaries are full and overflowing."

Women today are more practical and rational than earlier.

Indian women have never been as expressive and

    independent as she is today.

Women today, consider themselves as the true `ardhangini' of

their husbands. She is more cognizant of his world today andshe understands his work pressures.

Women-from being a care-taker/nurturer to a friend in the role

of a Mother. It is widely felt that earning power allows them to

voice their opinions on bigger decisions.

Todays women no more feel that a career would be at thecost of neglecting the family and children.
