    in their lifetime.

33% of women over 15 have experienced inappropriate comments about

In the previous 12 months, the most frequent category of perpetrators was

male current or previous partners, and the second most frequent category

was male family members or friends

Awareness Strategies Prevention and AssertivenessWhen it comes to women's self defence, it is especially important for women to

    develop a self defence strategy.

Learn self-defence techniques - This is the foundation for any good self defence

    strategy.

Self defence tools - Learning how to use and carrying self-defence items or

    improvised weapons

Practice - By practicing techniques you will gain the edge you need to react in athreatening situation.

You must be aware of whats going on around you at all times.

    Keep your ears open.

    Make frequent visual scans.

While this not only helps you to see whats happening around you, bu t it gives the

    impression you have confidence .

Defensive Tactics Appear confident - Hold your head high. Keep straight shoulders and back.

    Look at people's faces.

Use common sense - Lock your doors, use buddy system, let people know

where you are and w hen youll be home, etc.

Trust your intuition - If you "have a bad feeling" there is probably a reason.

Have a plan - Be prepared to defend yourself if you have to.

Facing ViolenceAn attacker, an irate customer, or a mugger is more likely to hit a nameless,

stranger than someone with a name and whos empathizing with their needs.

    Drill

    (Practice with the group)

You start this humanizing process by saying

My name is ______________, how can I help you?

Or something similar. Reiterate simple messages that make theaggressor understand you are bewildered at how this situation got

    this bad.

AbductionWhat is Abduction? Abduction means that a person in the course of a crime isforcibly detained against their will even if this is a short distance and small periodof time.

    Avoid Abductions

Abductions happen all over the world for various reasons: domestic disputes,

    ransom seekers or sexual predators.

Never go with a kidnapper React immediately. Either run, or sit down so he'd

    have to drag you away.

    Be aware of your surroundings.

Keep your eyes moving, observing everything and everyone.

Any behaviour changes, as he comes near.

A hidden, motionless hand, is unnatural when he walks.

Matches your moves, he stops and goes when you do.

Challenges you, What did you say? What are you looking at?

Sandwiches you , two people approaching from different directions.

    Abduction by Car

Instructors are to talk about an abductor getting them into a car.

Abductors normally want to take women to a place where no one can see them. They will make them lie down, on the floor of the car or in the boot. Mostimportantly explain to the women that it is not over and always keep fighting.

Ask the women if they have any ideas about what they should do.

If in the car leave a trail a handbag, or even shoes.

If forced into a car explain to look for ways to HURT the car. Theycan do this by pulling out wires, kicking out tail lights in the boot, usea tyre wrench or tools.

If in passenger seat explain to the women to grab the steering wheeland cause an accident or crash into another car so the police arecalled.

There are no rules kick out windows, honk the horn, pull keys outof the ignition.

Kick and scream and do anything they need to do to be safe.

Remember to explain that cars need to stop at stop signs or red lightsif they dont attention will be drawn to them.

The abductor may tell women if they cause trouble the will have to hurt them.

The truth is when they get them to where they want them they are going to hurtthem anyway so dont worry about making them mad. Any thing they tell you is alie to get you where they want you. Do whatever you have to do fight, bite orhit its ok.

    Self Defence

The First lesson to learn in Self-Defence is that you are important .

The second most important lesson is to learn to understand that your mind isyour most valuable weapon , in self-Defence we use our mind to control panicand fear, use our brain to assess a situation and to judge the most appropriateaction to take.

Body Language - Staring at the ground, hunched shoulders, hiding your hands inyour pockets and making yourself small, carries the message- Im weak andvulnerable. Women get targeted as easy prey so having strong body language

decreases the risk of being a target. Make eye contact with people, Swing yourarms when walking, take up space. Try not to put yourself in a position where itincreases your vulnerability.

    Drill

(Practice body language and verbal strategies with the

    group)

    Verbal Strategies

Being assertive is an important part of taking control of your life.If someones behaviour is making you feel bad, uncomfortable or scared then

confront the person.Tell the attacker Name the behavior, Criticize it, tell them what you want

them to do: - Youre constantly touching me, I dont like it, stop it Repeat if

    necessary .

Your voice is a weapon too. Yelling will alert other people around and can startlean attacker.Shout NO loudly and deeply from your stomach. Repeat if necessary .

Shouting tenses up your abdominal region so if you happened to receive a hit atthat same time then you are much less likely to be winded by it.

    Distance and Time

Have an assistant come out and fall into a fighting stance.

Face the assistant. Instructor hands close to assistants shoulder and slap shoulderquickly. Have assistant try and block assistant cant because of reaction time .

Show technique again this time winding up before strike so assistant can block.

Show technique again this time instructor allow more distance so assistant canblock.

At close range a woman can be successful with their first strike.

A Womans primary goal is to always run first and scream for help- only strike as alast resort.

    Adrenal Stress Fight or Flight

Once you are in the face of fear or danger a mixture of adrenaline and cortisol iscast off into your blood stream. This is what may result.

1- Loss Of Fine Motor Movement - Hands will tremble.

    2- Limited decision making Skills

3- Tunnel Vision, will make you less aware of the rest of the environmentyou are in limits your ability to see if there is more than one attacker.

4- Time Distortion Time will appear to slow down or speed up.

5- Muscle Contraction Some muscle groups will tense up and contract.

6- Pain Tolerance Your tolerance for pain will increase.

7-Loss of bodily Functions The body is excreting fluid and waste due tomuscle contractions and to make the body less heavy for running away orfighting.

    Drill

    Get students to Line up.

Explain to students that they can each gauge their adrenalresponse.

Explain to students that in this exercise they are going to begrabbed by the combat suit attacker.

Explain that the exercise will be repeated later in the course

because how they react to this depends largely upon how manytimes you have been in these circumstances .

Have Combat suit attacker grab students one by one

    IMPROVISED WEAPONS

You should only use an improvised weapon if it is absolutely necessary.

Improvised weapons are different because it is perfectly acceptable to carry themaround.

    1. Umbrella - Umbrellas are a great self-defense weapon. You can use itas a stabbing weapon, or you could us it like a baseball bat, swinging forthe head and groin.

    2. Spray Most attackers will hesitate when facing a spray can thatcould blind them

    3. Newspaper Carrying a rolled up newspaper or magazine to strikewith

    4. Belt - An easy-to-undo belt gives you a whip-like weapon with adangerous heavy end.

    5. Coffee / Drinks Throw towards your attackers face

    6. Bag Swinging a bag like a club

    7. Glass Bottle a very dangerous object to swing or throw.

    8. Flashlight/ Torch will make quite an effective weapon.

    9. Keys can make a good projectile. Punch to the soft targets such as

    the eyes

    10. Pen - An improvised stabbing weapon.

    11. Chairs - gain both distance and control.

    Drill

Have these objects for group to Practice with (fun exercise)

    STANCES

Balance - Talk to the women about balance. Standing with your feet together is

not well balanced. L-stance is balanced, feet shoulder distance apart.

    Drill Defensive Stance (Passive Stance)

    Drill Interview Stance

If someone has confronted you, your hands should come up

    straight away.

Step back a small step with your dominant side, same shoulder

and leg back. Tuck your chin to protect your throat and chin.

Keep your hands high, creating an obstacle to help protect the

face and body. You are now in a safer position, aware and ready

    to protect yourself.

The interview stance can be used when you are in conversation

    with another person.

You should keep your hands at about chest level and use them

in making gestures as you talk.

Keep an eye on your potential assailant, looking approximately

at chest level where you can see movement from hands and

    feet.

Punching is a striking technique that is very overused and over-rated

Look to carry out continuous combinations of short strikes; overload the sensory

system in the head and face area.

    Forearm Strikes

Swinging the forearm against the side of

the neck is a super effective strike and

very simple to perform. Your arm

should be kept very slight bent to avoid

    a hyper extension .

    Forearm Strikes

Can also be performed by pushing your

    forearm away from you.

    Biting

Can be used as an effective distraction toset up other strikes or to break free froma hold. There are possible consequencesof transmitting infection from theattacker if the skin is broken. If its youronly option you decide.

    Conclusion

Avoiding trouble is your first goal by being aware of what is going on around you.

Your next option is to walk away or run if possible. The ability to verbally diffuseor de-escalate a potential situation is a great skill that requires practice. When

avoiding a physical confrontation fails, you can use the simple counter measures

to escape and use whatever physical force is necessary for you to achieve that.

You have learned the importance of a good stance and how you can use it to help

    set up your own attack.

You have discovered Targets, how to strike these targets and how to increase the

    effects of your strikes.

You have also learned many general tips that will increase your general Self

    Defence knowledge and awareness.

Ensure that you practice at home with family or friends, attend courses or classes, search for more information and dont neglect the verbal aspects.

Build up the confidence that you have in your self and be prepared to defend

    yourself.

It is not fancy techniques that will save you but your instincts and hunger for

survival. Believe in yourself, knowing that you can be effective in defending self

    Drill

Now repeat the first drill have assistant in combat suit grab each student as in the
