REUNION OF DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH SNAPP WOLVERTON

The preceding newspaper rep o r t of the reunion of descendants of Joseph Snapp Wolverton and Sarah (Carter) Wolverton was submitted by Randy Wolverton of Alexander, Arkansas (who took the photograph, and so i s not p i c t u r e d ) . Marion Harlan of Columbia, M i s s o u r i , another good researcher, sent a c l e a r e r copy of the a r t i c l e and gave the source. Marion i s standing i n the center of the second row, w i t h white h a i r and mustache, l i g h t s h i r t and dark b e l t . Randy Wolverton's w i f e , Ruth, i s k n e e l i n g next t o Marion, and t h e i r 4 daughters are s i t t i n g i n f r o n t of her.

This f a m i l y o r i g i n a l l y s e t t l e d at College Mound, near Moberly i n Randolph County, M i s s o u r i i n 1857, having come from Hampshire County, West V i r g i n i a . The l i n e a g e back to Charles the immigrant goes l i k e t h i s : Joseph Snapp Wolverton 6, I s a a c 5 , I s a a c 4 , I s a a c 3 , Roger 2, C h a r l e s 1 .

EDITORIAL

This i s s u e completes 2 1/2 years of p r i n t i n g the n e w s l e t t e r . This a l s o b r i n g s the t o t a l number of pages published to 154. I f t h i s were b e t t e r organized, i t would be equal to a book. E v e n t u a l l y I do want to make an index to the m a t e r i a l s used i n the n e w s l e t t e r to o f f e r easy access to the i n f o r m a t i o n already p r i n t e d .

Quite a b i t of new i n f o r m a t i o n has been uncovered, and more i n f o r m a t i o n i s bound to come to l i g h t i n the coming months and years. A renewal form i s enclosed as a reminder to help w i t h expenses and a chance to f i l l i n a lineage chart and/or any personal comments or queries. The p r i c e and l e n g t h of the n e w s l e t t e r remains the same f o r 1996.

Some of the cousins have e i t h e r gotten acquainted f o r the f i r s t time or become reacquainted again a f t e r many years through the news shared i n the newsletter and through the e f f o r t s of many of our readers. I t pleases me t h a t I have been a c a t a l y s t f o r s e v e r a l i n d i v i d u a l s t o l i n k back to Charles the immigrant and/or to f i n d other c l o s e r e l a t i v e s who are doing research. I am pleased w i t h the r e s u l t s , and I hope t h a t you are too.

David Macdonald's research seems to outshine what everyone e l s e i s doing on research at t h i s time. I cannot say thanks enough to David f o r a l l the time and energy he has spent s o r t i n g out t r u t h from e r r o r and p l a c i n g unattached Wolvertons i n t o t h e i r proper f a m i l i e s a f t e r d e f i n i t e proof i s found. And the amazing t h i n g i s that David i s not even a Wolverton descendant. He s t a r t e d t h i s p r o j e c t w i t h the idea of h e l p i n g an uncle by marriage to s o r t out the e a r l y generations of h i s Wolverton l i n e .

So much of the e a r l y Wolverton h i s t o r y has been t r a d i t i o n o n l y , and when records have been l o c a t e d , the new evidence many times has proven the t r a d i t i o n s f a l s e . This p r o j e c t of David's has grown and grown u n t i l now he has primary records

on v i r t u a l l y every Wolverton l i n e p r i o r t o 1850, the time when census records begin g i v i n g more complete i n f o r m a t i o n . David has even h i r e d a p r o f e s s i o n a l researcher f o r one area of h i s research. I'm g l a d t h a t David i s able t o answer many of the questions t h a t I have from time to time.

Hopefully i n the coming years, an accurate t r a c i n g of the Wolverton generations w i l l be completed. I'd l i k e t o see someone put a l l the i n f o r m a t i o n i n t o book form. Wouldn't that be great?

Many thanks to cousins who have blessed me w i t h some of t h e i r " f i n d s " i n the l a s t couple of years s i n c e t h i s newsletter was s t a r t e d . My apologies t o anyone who i s awaiting a. r e p l y . I'm s t i l l i n t e n d i n g t o answer l e t t e r s . But my correspondence f i l e i s so l a r g e t h a t I don't know when I ' l l f u l l y be able t o catch up.

A s p e c i a l thanks to John and Jean F l i n n f o r sending a c a s s e t t e recording of the song, "Wolverton Mountain." Also thanks to Ann Coleman, Anna V. Smith, James McCafferty, Bonnie Woolverton, Randy Wolverton, K i l b u r n Stoner, David Macdonald, Joyce Brown, Peggy W i l l i a m s , Hank Walters, P a t r i c i a Treece, B i l l Randolph, Darlyn Nehrt, Marlene Wolverton, E l i z a b e t h Gramling, and o t h e r s , f o r v a r i o u s items they have sent me i n recent months. These a l l are appreciated.

I j u s t received word from Bonnie Woolverton t h a t our cousin, Van Hines M i t c h e l l passed away i n H a r l i n g e n , Texas on October 30, 1995. He had a massive stroke on October 16th and never regained consciousness. H i s daughter was the one who n o t i f i e d Bonnie. Van was featured i n our l a s t i s s u e w i t h lineage #62. We o f f e r our condolences to the f a m i l y .

WOLVERTON CHART RECEIVED BY EDITOR

Many thanks to Katherine L i t t l e f i e l d Smith of T u l s a , Oklahoma, who r e c e n t l y sent me a copy of a l a r g e r o l l e d c h art that measures 34 x 74 inches. She a l s o sent a copy of her r o l l e d chart t o David Macdonald. Katherine o r i g i n a l l y r e c e i v e d her chart q u i t e a few years ago from a Wolverton l i v i n g i n T u l s a where she l i v e s . That cousin i s now deceased. I remember f i r s t seeing t h i s chart at Katherine's house i n May 1981, a f t e r attending the L i t t l e f i e l d Reunion h e l d a t E l g i n , Oklahoma t h a t year.

The chart bears t h i s i n s c r i p t i o n : "Wolverton Genealogy. C o l l e c t e d and charted by A. N. Wolverton, Vancouver, B.C." A note i s given at the bottom of the c h a r t : "Important. This chart has been compiled from data r e c e i v e d i n scores of l e t t e r s , besides a very c a r e f u l study of many o l d documents. A considerable p a r t of the data here shown i s from t r a d i t i o n , however, and many l i n e s are incomplete. P o s s i b l e e r r o r s may be detected too. At any r a t e you are e a r n e s t l y requested to study t h i s chart c a r e f u l l y and i f you can add any d e t a i l , w r i t e f u l l y to A N Wolverton Vancouver B.C."

Under the l i s t i n g f o r Charles Woolverton, the immigrant, the

chart says: " T r a d i t i o n says he came from S t a f f o r d s h i r e near Wolverhampton, Eng. w i t h h i s brothers G a b r i e l and John about 1682, t h a t he stayed i n Long I s l a n d f o r a time before moving to New Jersey. F i r s t record NJ 1693"

Each of C h a r l e s ' 9 c h i l d r e n are l i s t e d as recorded i n Charles' own handwriting i n h i s B i b l e , which at the time the chart was made, was the property of Rev. F. J . Tomlinson, P i t t s t o w n , New Jersey. Rev. Tomlinson was a descendant of Charles Woolverton through son Dennis Woolverton and granddaughter, Dinah Woolverton, who married F r a n c i s Tomlinson. The major l i n e s charted are those of 5 of Charles' sons: Charles, Roger, Isaac, Dennis, and J o e l . Lines were documented by records of Miss Emma Ten Broeck Runk; Rev. W. H. Wolverton; Benjamin Woolverton of Shamokin, Pennsylvania i n 1878; Simon P. Wolverton of Sunbury, Pennsylvania i n 1897; Linus Woolverton of Grimsby, Ontario i n 1912; Dr. A. B. Wolverton of Topeka, Kansas i n 1897; Adjutant General W. D. Wolverton; E l i j a h Aaron Woolverton of M o r r i l t o n , Arkansas; James H. Wolverton of Duncan, Indian T e r r i t o r y i n 1897; James L. L i t t l e f i e l d of Adamsville, Tennessee i n 1913; Asher B. Wolverton of Raven Rock, New Jersey i n 1897; Mrs. A. W. Stedman, Albany, New York; C h a r l o t t e E. Nobles of Pasadena, C a l i f o r n i a ; Lewis D. Wolverton, Flemington, New Jersey; Mrs. E l i z a Dawson of Wolverton, Ontario i n 1870; I s r a e l M. Wolverton, I o n i a , Michigan i n 1897; and Miss Dora Goble, 1897.

This c h a r t was s t a r t e d by A l f r e d Newton Wolverton of Vancouver, B r i t i s h Columbia, who was a descendant through two l i n e s going back to J o e l Woolverton, son of Charles the immigrant. H i s work on t h i s p a r t i c u l a r c hart seems to have ended i n 1913 as he i s l i s t e d as " s i n g l e 1913" on the c h a r t . He was 33 years o l d at t h a t time.

The lower righthand corner says, "Revised by Major D. R. Wolverton, U.S. Army, Sept. 29, 1937." David R. Wolverton (who l a t e r reached the rank of Colonel) was the brother of Edward Nathaniel Saxton Jacob Bonaparte Woolverton, who became the f i r s t p r e s i d e n t of the N a t i o n a l and I n t e r n a t i o n a l A s s o c i a t i o n of Woolvertons. These 2 brothers were descended through C h a r l e s ' son Roger Woolverton. They had c o l l a b o r a t e d w i t h A. N. Woolverton i n compiling records on the f a m i l y i n the e a r l y days. Edward d i e d i n 1952, and h i s m a t e r i a l s were turned over t o David. According to Charles Evans Wolverton's book (pp. 79, 108, 110), i n 1963, David Wolverton had possession of a l a r g e chart (4 f e e t wide and 75 f e e t long) and a rough d r a f t f o r a book on the Wolvertons which had been w r i t t e n by h i s brother, Edward Wolverton. He intended t o p u b l i s h i t . According to Beulah Imhoff, a f t e r David passed away, h i s daughter i n t u r n r e c eived the m a t e r i a l s .

Concerning the above, David Macdonald says that Edward N. S. B. Wolverton wrote an 1100-page opus on the f a m i l y of which three copies were made, and one went out t o A. N. Wolverton. A. N. Wolverton was a "chart f r e a k " and created a 66-foot chart now i n the possession of one of h i s descendants, who has abstracted a l l the i n f o r m a t i o n from i t . The copy of Edward N. S. B. Wolverton's book d r a f t which was

sent to A. N. Wolverton i s no longer extant. P o s s i b l y another copy e x i s t s somewhere. The ch a r t owned by Katherine Smith and other c h a r t s of the f a m i l y seem to a l l be d e r i v a t i v e s of the l a r g e r c h a r t .
