Hello and welcome to the

Summer edition of the WN4 Local Link

Our heating is still on, much to the dismay of my other half, and we have major draughts blowing through

the house as we are in full swing with our long-awaited kitchen extension. At the moment we haven’t had to surrender

our old kitchen but, in preparation, we have started to set up camp with a mini-kitchen in our guest room. So far so good and not too much dust, it is bearable!  So no summer holidays planned for us this year as we will mainly be found trawling the aisles of the local DIY stores arguing over what colour taps etc we want. Cannot wait! If you are fancying a family day out in the coming months I can highly recommend the annual Scarecrow festival in Blackrod Village, Bolton on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July. We thoroughly enjoy the hunt with friends and family and it is always a great day out, especially if the sun is shining. This festival has grown year on year with the local schools, shops and businesses ge ing involved to make it a day to remember. Pick up your programme and start scarecrow-hunting......hope to see some of you there. If you have a local event or business that you would like to share with our readers, please get in touch. We reach out to 10,000 home in the WN4 area and so could you.  So if you haven’t got 10,000 people coming through your door, why not go through theirs and stay visible - with an annual booking.  Recognition builds trust and trust brings business, it’s that simple.

See you all next time...

LOCAL BUSINESS SCIZZOR YAPPY IS GOING STRONG

Top competition groomer and Asian Fusion afi cionado, Wayne Roby, takes us inside his business;

What services do you off er?We off er a wide range of services from simple baths, tidy-ups and mini grooms to full show trims. We also off er a pick-up and delivery service for clients who may not be able to bring their dogs to the salon.

When did you get started in Dog Grooming?I started my business Scizzor Yappy in 2009 following a three year college course studying animal care and animal management. A small element of the course was dog grooming and that’s when my passion for creative grooming began. Since starting Scizzor Yappy my business has gone from strength to strength year on year.

What’s been your biggest achievement?Stepping out into the ring of the competition world and having my work judged by some of the top stylist from around the world and managing to walk away with my head held high with multiple awards.

What gives you the most satisfaction?Seeing dogs happy to arrive at our salon…watching them leave very happy, wagging their tails.

What is your favourite animal/breed to groom and why?Owning 6 poodles, I have to say they are at the top of my list of favourite dogs to groom and work with! This breed’s loyalty and aff ection makes then stand out and the willingness to please you on the grooming is amazing. Not only this but the array of styles they can carry ticks even more boxes for me.

How did you get into Asian Fusion Styling?I have always expressed an interest in Japanese inspired styles. I started to study them via the web and my fi rst poodle became my canvass to practise my ideas and with the added help of my amazing clients allowing me to style their pooches.

What are your aspirations for the future?Working to see Scizzor Yappy grow and expand.

Retired police offi cers in Wigan are pioneers in an ambitious national network of highly ve ed handymen launched by ‘Blue Local Handymen’. Helping to combat the endemic ongoing problem of cowboy builders and dodgy tradespeople, local retired police offi cers with a passion for home main-tenance and gardening are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to the residents and businesses of Wigan and Warrington. Typically police offi cers retire a er 30 years service and a huge number are still eager to con-tinue playing an active and productive role in their communities. All of the handymen prove themselves capable and experienced in indoor and outdoor home maintenance works before joining the network and carry recent Enhanced CRB (Criminal Record) Checks. Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powle , says “Our ve ing process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police offi cers with many years working in the community under their belt – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears be er than anyone else and they genuinely care.“ Whilst there are an enormous number of very capable, hard-working and honest tradespeople, sadly the unregulated and fragmented nature of the market

allows for too many immoral rogues to operate under-the-radar which has regre ably eroded trust from the British public. Back in 2012 The Offi ce of Fair Trading reported a shocking 70,000 complaints related to UK home maintenance sector. Using this unique pool of talented and trustworthy individuals, the Blue Local Handymen network is hoping to ensure total trust through a careful selection process and a rigorous ongoing feedback and improvement programme to perpetually monitor and improve the service for customers. Local Wigan Handyman Chris Sims states: “Having been a police offi cer for 30 years and being passion-ate about serving the community, what be er way in retirement of continuing to serve the community by indulging my passion for DIY and utilising my skills to assist local people.” WN4 resident Mr Webster recently used the service: “Chris was excellent. I was really impressed. He had a great personality and was really supportive. The work was great and he was clean and tidied up a er himself.” More information can be found on the website www.trustinblue.com and bookings can be made either by calling freephone 0800 255 0 255 or emailing [email protected]

With summer just a fl eecy layer away I am already working the Winter 2015 fash-ion look as I stand in a sun-drenched studio. I am on the 4th fl oor of a ramshackle building (think of Dragon’s Den) in the Meat Packing District of New York. Poking and prodding and making demanding requests for me to “strike a pose” is my good friend Maria Harper, resident buyer for one of NYC’s largest fashion houses.

She is the frontrunner when it comes to the base layer look, so on trend with the Big Apple’s fash pack. Those in the know would rarely leave their apartments without sporting the luxury look that these layers give to any everyday outfi t. Even if you were run down by a bus they would give you an automaticupgrade to the fi rst class emergency room - no insurance required!

The nice thing about working and staying with friends is the end-of-shoot drinks, especially when they navi-gate you to their local cocktail bar way off the beaten track. Here the bartender remembers your tipple even though the last time you stepped through the doors was more than 12 months ago! Play hard and live fast seems to be the way of the New Yorkers. Mornings here begin with

a gruelling 5.30am wake-up call by the concierge to which we promptly respond (some more enthusiastically than others). Nikes laced up and off we go for a session at Soul Cycle only two blocks away from the serenity of the apartment. I have never seen so many neon-lycra-wearing deranged fi ies so early in the morning, pumped up and raring to go! The session is punctuated with lots of “Yeahs”, “Whoops” and generally high-energy noises accompanied by smells that would be right at home in the Bergdorf Goodman’s spritz department!

A er the workout we hit the localsmoothie bar for a well-earned spinach, banana and beetroot smoothie. Having past several golden arches (of McDonalds) to get there. To put it mildly I am a li le defl ated at the result, but am assured it will help me recover faster than a hash brown. The jury is still out on that one. We head back to the apartment and I have to restrain myself from sliding back under the duvet, wishful thinking, as my fi rst appointment of the day is at 8.10am. Just enough time to shower in Maria’s marble-lined bathroom making a beeline for the many luxury products on display.

Now just a li le more layering, prodding and posing then back home to the real world. Concierge wake-up calls will only be a dis-tant memory and hash browns will be back on the menu!

pack...”

aving fi nally planned a date for our long-awaited girly night out with some of my fellow Yummy Mummies, we had decided to push the boat out and reserved a table where spaghe i hoops where not on the menu!  I like to think of our get-togethers as a celebration of surviving the everyday traumas of motherhood and everything it throws at us. You could say it is our reward to ourselves!  Recognition as a Mum generally comes in the form of a Crayola-fi lled scrap of paper that proudly takes centre stage on the fridge door or the occasional “I love you Mummy” usually a er some kind of breakage, but tonight it is all about ‘Us Girls!’ I purchased a whole new outfi t complete with heels all in the comfort of my own company and that in itself, was a luxury worth waiting for. This was all thanks to Gran, who was eager to baby-sit the children having miss-heard my need to visit Harvey Nichols for a hospital appointment. It would be wrong of me to correct her misunderstanding.  Nights out solo in our house are rare, so when they do

Wine & Dine For One

H

happen it’s like we are 18 again and allowed to drink for the very fi rst time. We prepare for the nights with military precision and agreement is made with my hubby that he will keep the children occupied until Mummy is ready to face the world again. It has been known to be Tuesday before full service is resumed! In order to hamper the guilt of such indulgence I buy the kids treats, lay out neatly ironed PJs and pop into M&S for their brilliant ‘wine and dine for two’, obviously to be eaten by one, hubby!). To top it all I promise that the favour will be returned some time soon, since when did I become such a guilt-ridden wuss! To be honest the main motive is that nothing is going to get in the way of this longed-for night out. The Uber app on my phone pinged to confi rm my taxi had arrived and the night offi cially started. It was truly a miracle and a fabulous night out was had by all. We all agreed that the more we got out the more easily we would overcome our guilt...So here’s to the next time!
