The Aeronautical Meteorology Programme  (AeMP) is one of the major WMO application programmesMain Long‐Term Objectives – as agreed by WMO Cg‐17 (2015):

a) To contribute to a globally harmonized meteorological service to the international air navigation meeting the requirements of the aviation users for meteorological information and services and contributing to safety, efficiency and regularity of aviation transport;

b) To support the continuous improvement of the meteorological service to aviation through coordinating the underpinning science and technology activities and their transfer to operational practice;

c) To achieve the highest possible level of compliance of the WMO Members with the technical regulations, standard and recommended practices established by WMO and ICAO for the provision of aeronautical meteorological service;

Main Long‐Term Objectives – as agreed by WMO Cg‐17 (2015) (contd):

d) To promote effective and efficient services through international cooperation;

e) To contribute to the assessment of the linkages between the aviation and environment including the impacts of the climate change and variation on future aviation operations;

f) To establish globally agreed requirements for the qualificationand competence of the aeronautical meteorological personnel aspart of the quality management system (QMS) for the provision ofaeronautical meteorological services.

The  Weather  Factor• Weather is a major contributing factor to

aviation accidents

• IATA classifies weather as an “environmental threat” that induces pilot’s error

• Weather is the second biggest threat to flight safety after aircraft malfunction

The  Weather  Factor

• Many lessons learned• AirAsia case:

The loss of Flight 8501 also brought attention to the lack of weather radar at Indonesian air traffic control centres.An immediate air transport directive had been issued "making it mandatory for pilots to go through a face‐to‐face briefing by an airline flight operations officer on weather conditions and other operational issues prior to every flight."

• The essential safety role of the meteorological service is to provide information that fits to the overall situational awareness to help pilots keep a safe distance from the weather hazards
