With every new year, Karen Anderson knows it’s time

for her mammogram screening at Winneshiek Medical Center. This January, Karen anticipated a different experience. “Having worked at Bank of theWest in Decorah, and now Seed Savers, I have always found it convenient to have mammograms at WMC,” says Karen. “My experiences have all been wonderful – the mammography staff have a knack for making you comfortable – but I was looking forward to the new technology they had been advertising.”

Winneshiek Medical Center recently installed state-of-the-art digital mammography technology, which provides sharper images using lower doses of radiation, and breast cushions to provide a more positive experience for women.

Richard Remark, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System radiologist at Winneshiek Medical Center says, “The breast cushion provides a soft, warm cushion for the breast during mammography without compromising the high-level image quality.” Dr. Remark is a full-time, on-site Mayo Clinic Health System radiologist who specializes in breast health and breast disease diagnosis.

“The special padding did make my mammogram more comfortable, but it was the digital images that most impressed me. They were immediately available for the technologist to review. The quality was evident – the images were amazingly clear!” says Karen.

The Winneshiek Medical Center mammography suite is staffed with skilled, compassionate and

technologists trained in mammography for women with breast implants. If patients need further testing, Winneshiek Medical Center offers biopsy options and surgical options, including breast MRI, stereotactic breast biopsies, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, and sentinel node mapping - all conveniently available at the locally owned medical center in Decorah. Same day appointments are often available for additional testing.

“The entire experience was quite simple,” says Karen. “Mammograms are uncomfortable because of the very nature of the test, but the new technology made it more positive.”

Mammography screenings are available at WMC for any patient, regardless of provider, and patients do not need a doctor’s referral to schedule an appointment. WMC mammography offers daily appointments, Monday through Friday, and extended hours for more convenient evening appointments when needed. Call Winneshiek Medical Center Mammography at 563-387-3022 to schedule your mammogram, or learn more about the new technology at winmedical.org by clicking on the Women’s Health tab.

Bradley Orvis, M.D., has been a urologist with Mayo Clinic Health System at Winneshiek Medical Center since 2001. Dr. Orvis provides daily care in the WMC Clinic for diagnosis and treatment of female urinary tract problems and disorders, including: surgical and non-surgical treatments for $'urinary tract infections, overactive bladder symptoms and vaginal $ '?

WMC provides state-of-the-art facilities and technology to support Dr. Orvis in evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence and other urological issues for women.

Randall Bremner, M.D., FACOG, will join Dr. Orvis in providing specialty care for

women’s health at WMC in May of this year. Dr. Bremner will provide gynecologic care and surgery for women of all ages, including addressing infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding, sexual function concerns, menopause and pelvic pain evaluation.

Urinary Incontinence

SolutionsDo you frequently race to

the bathroom? Does a hearty laugh bring tears to your eyes – and unexpected moisture elsewhere? Do sneezes and coughs elicit results far from your head? You are not alone. If you answered “yes” to any of the preceding questions, you may be among the millions of Americans who deal with loss of bladder control – urinary incontinence.

4

“Urinary incontinence is especially common in women,” says Brad Orvis, MD, a urologist with Mayo Clinic Health System at Winneshiek Medical Center. “It’s estimated that half of all women in the United States experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lives. Men who have prostate gland problems are at increased risk of incontinence, and many older adults experience some degree of incontinence.”What’s causing the problem?

Urinary incontinence is a medical condition that can have many causes.

“Urinary incontinence isn’t a disease itself,” Dr. Orvis explains. “It indicates some underlying problem or condition – including weakened muscles, nerve problems or an obstruction in the urinary tract – that can be treated in most instances.”

Some conditions are temporary and can be managed with simple treatment. More often, urinary incontinence is a persistent condition caused by an ?Continence Care in Decorah

The Clinic at Winneshiek Medical Center has a urodynamics testing laboratory – a room equipped with sophisticated instruments for determining E?Urodynamic tests provide a detailed analysis of bladder function and an assessment of pelvic muscle strength, an important element of bladder ? bladder and pelvic muscle function is recorded and X?; * determined.

“By determining the cause of incontinence, we can prescribe the most effective treatment, whether it is bladder training, pelvic muscle strengthening exercises or medication,” says Dr. Orvis.Treatment can eliminate or greatly improve incontinence

Treatment options for urinary incontinence include behavioral techniques, prescription drugs, medical devises and surgery. In most cases, incontinence

?) Eeliminated, modern products and ways of managing urinary incontinence can ease its discomfort and inconvenience. When to seek medical advice

Seeking medical advice for incontinence is important for several reasons.

First, incontinence may indicate a more serious underlying condition, such as infection, a nerve disorder or, in relatively rare cases, cancer. Second, incontinence may be causing you to restrict your activities and limit social interactions to avoid embarrassment. Urinary incontinence may increase the risk of falls in older adults as they rush to make it to the bathroom.

A few isolated incidents of incontinence don’t necessarily warrant medical attention. Nevertheless, if incontinence is frequent or affects your quality of life, talk to your physician.

Nursing and rehabilitation

to meet your special needsSkilled Care It was a beautiful spring day when Paul Johnson

climbed on his tractor for some morning farm work. But Paul’s plans changed in an instant when a log he’d been pushing bucked back, slamming into the back of his neck and sending him somersaulting off the tractor. “I landed face-up on the ground, looking at the clear blue sky and the tractor’s axle above me as it continued down the hill,” says Paul. His calls for help were eventually heard by a neighbor, who called 911.

Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance and area emergency responders arrived to the scene, quickly assessed the situation and called for MedLink to do a Y7?Z+of the paramedics saying ‘We’d better put a neck brace on.’ Although I didn’t know it at the time, that single act was the difference between me walking again and

facing paralysis,” says Paul. Within one hour of the dispatched call, Paul was in the helicopter heading north to St. Marys.

Before his seven-hour neck surgery, Paul was given a 10% chance of ever walking again by the Mayo Clinic team in Rochester. His surgeons re-built the crushed vertebrae in his neck, and at the same time, repositioned his dislocated hip.

\ * * in intensive care in Rochester consisted of therapy to gradually increase movement. “My wife, Pat, and I discussed staying at St. Marys to recover, but decided the best place for me was near my home – at Winneshiek Medical Center,” says Paul.

Following an illness or surgery, patients from any acute care hospital or system can choose to have their skilled care at Winneshiek Medical Center. Through

a program called the Swing Bed Program, patients receive skilled nursing care and therapy that meets ?

“I was at Winneshiek Medical Center for 19 days,” says Paul. “During that time, I had to re-learn how to climb in and out of bed, get in a wheelchair and walk down the hall, along with many other daily living tasks.” Being close to home, Paul had regular visitors to pass the time and keep him in good spirits. “My granddaughter would bring her guitar to play and sing

“My nursing care was second-to-none, and without the quality of care I received – from the intuitiveness of the initial emergency response team

to the skill and compassion of the staff helping me recover (both in the hospital and home health care afterwards) – my world would be very different today.”

But it was the laughter that made his time at the medical center memorable. “My therapists, nurses… we laughed a lot,” says Paul. “When you depend on the nursing staff for everything, it helps to develop a sense of humor.” He adds, “You come to understand how important a good, local hospital is. And today, Paul can be found most anywhere. Since the accident, he has traveled to Greece, the Boundary Waters, camped in Texas and hiked the desert. Paul says, “With a little luck, the ‘miracle workers’ at Mayo, and the excellent care at WMC, I am standing on my own two feet.” He adds, “I am thankful.”

Spring is sports season for many

amateur athletes and weekend warriors in the Winneshiek County area, and ankle sprains are one of the

most common sports injuries this time of year.“As people emerge from their winter hibernation

and start to get active again, they can injure their ankles,” says Thomas Marquardt, DPM, Mayo Clinic Health System podiatrist at WMC. Anyone who injures an ankle requires prompt medical treatment, *E ?7 $7?+??)?' swelling and pain until the ankle can be evaluated

and treated. A sprain may not always be a sprain; the ankle could be fractured.

Dr. Marquardt shares three spring ankle sprain prevention tips:

1. Perform warm-up stretches and exercises before playing sports.

2. Wear the right shoes for the sport. For example, don’t wear running shoes for sports that involve a lot of side-to-side movement, such as tennis and basketball.

3. Wear an ankle brace if you’re recovering from an injury or have repeatedly sprained your ankle.

Donor SpotlightRobert and Patricia Usgaard understand the

importance of local, quality health care. Over the years, they have utilized a number of services offered by Winneshiek Medical Center and are thankful they could stay here in Decorah for medical care.

The Usgaard’s have been a big part of the Winneshiek Medical Center’s growth and have plans to continue that support for years to come. Robert was one of Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation’s ?|* fund-raiser that raised over $90,000 for cancer screening equipment. The board had no money to start with, so they used any occasion to raise a dollar, even selling May Baskets to raise just $300!

Holly Kanengieter, coordinator of the WMC Foundation, said, “Robert’s favorite fund-raiser was the auctions. He enjoyed the bidding! I don’t know how many items he left with, but he sure helped raise dollars for the foundation.”

Patricia continues to be an active Winneshiek Medical Center Auxiliary board member. She volunteers her time for the many fund-raisers they conduct to support the medical center.

Robert and Patricia have informed the Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors that they have bequested stock to the foundation. They want the medical center to continue to be a viable asset to the community. In order to keep up-to-date, and be a medical center people want to come needed. Robert says, “It is a great institution. How would we get along without it? We want the medical center to be so good that it is the place everyone wants to come to for care.”

Patients with spinal cord injuries and other

neurological disorders now have access to advanced technology, right here, close to home.

Winneshiek Medical Center recently received an RT300 rehabilitation bike through a donation from the SCI CAN Foundation. The RT300 bike is the only bike of its kind in Northeast Iowa. The bike uses state-of-the-art technology to provide advanced therapy for individuals

with spinal cord injuries for anyone who has lost voluntary movement in their arms or legs such as individuals with cerebral palsy, recovering from stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s or other brain or neurological injuries.

“It is a tremendous asset to have the bike available at Winneshiek

Medical Center for individuals to access without traveling long distances,” says Jennessa Luzum, OTR/L, occupational therapist at Winneshiek Medical Center and member of the SCI CAN Foundation Board. “Our staff has completed training, and the bike is available for patients to use under an established program guided by Winneshiek Medical Center Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine staff.”

Winneshiek Medical Center is making it convenient and easy for individuals to use the new RT300 bike. Individuals who are appropriate for use of the bike will undergo an evaluation by a trained therapist. After the patient is set up on an individualized program, they will be able to continue using the RT300 bike as a long term wellness/exercise program without a monthly charge. “This wonderful gift from the SCI CAN Foundation will also expand our therapy options for inpatients and outpatients in the region,” says Sarah Groux, director of Winneshiek Medical Center Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. To learn RT300 bike, visit their website at restorative-therapies.com. Anyone interested in using the RT300 rehabilitation bike should contact the Winneshiek Medical Center Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Department at 563-382-2911.

(~+;$~ +;'% * the bike, was created after Chris Norton was severely injured during a Luther College football game in 2010. Through his recovery Norton became aware of other people with spinal cord or neurological injuries who did not have access to this type of equipment. To respond to this need, he began the SCI CAN Foundation and donated the RT300 rehabilitation bike to Winneshiek Medical Center. According to Norton, The SCI CAN Foundation looks to continue to strengthen Iowa’s rehabilitation facilities with more therapy options. To stay posted on upcoming SCI CAN events or to get involved as a sponsor or donor visit the SCI CAN web site at: scicanfoundation.com.
