1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE

2.0 USES

The Sheerline PVC railing system described in this report is used in exterior applications as guards for balconies, porches, decks and stairs in one- and two-family dwellings in buildings of Type V-B (IBC) construction and other types of construction in applications where untreated wood is permitted by IBC Section 1406 .3, or in buildings constructed in accordance with the IRC .

3.0 DESCRIPTION

3.1 General:

The Sheerline guardrail system is made of extruded hollow polyvinyl chloride (PVC) manufactured in white, beige, clay and gray colors . The height of the railing assembly is 36 inches or 42 inches (914 or 1067 mm) above the walking surface .

3.1.1 Sheerline 3250 Series PVC Guardrail System: The bottom rail is nominally 3 inches (76 mm) square, while pickets are nominally 1-3/4 inch

(38 mm) fluted, 1-1/2 inch square (38 mm), or 2 inch square (51 mm) colonial PVC pickets . The top rail is a “T” shaped section, nominally 3-1/4 inches wide (82 mm) at the top and nominallly 4 inches high (102 mm) . The top and bottom rails are supplied in unreinforced lengths of 6 feet (1 .8 m) . The 8-foot-long (2 .4 m) and 10-foot-long (3m) sections are supplied with factory-installed aluminum “C” reinforcing channels for the top rail . The post sleeves are 4 inches (102 mm) square and have a wall thickness of 0 .12 inch (2 .9 mm) See Figure 1 for profiles

3.2 Durability:

When subjected to weathering, insect attack, and other decaying elements, material used to manufacture the Sheerline railing system is equivalent in durability to preservative-treated or naturally durable lumber when used in locations described in Section 2 .0 of this report . The Sheerline railing system has been evaluated for structural capacity when exposed to temperatures from -20°F to 125°F (-29°C to 52°C) .

3.3 Surface-burning Characteristics:

When tested in accordance with ASTM E 84, the Sheerline railing system has a flame-spread index of no greater than 200 .

4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION

4.1 General:

Installation of railing systems must comply with this report and the manufacturer's published installation instructions . The manufacturer’s published installation instructions must be available at the jobs site at all times during installation . When the manufacturer’s published installation instructions differ from this report, this report governs .

4.2 Structural:

The Sheerline PVC railing system is satisfactory to resist the loads specified in Section 1607 .7 .1, Exception 1,of the IBC and Table R301 .5 of the IRC, when installed at a maximum clear span post spacing as noted in Table 1 . When a railing is supported on one or both ends by the supporting construction, the maximum distance must be measured from the inside face of the post to edge-of structure or edge-of-structure to edge-of-structure, respectrively .

4.3 Installation:

Top and bottom rails must be attached to PVC-sleeved, pressure-treated, 4-by-4 wood posts via plastic socket brackets . Guardrails that are reinforced with an aluminum insert (i .e ., guardrails more than 6 feet long) must be secured to the bracket with two No .8 by 1-1/2 inch long (38 mm), stainless steel, self-drilling pan-head screws (one on each side of the rail) that penetrate the plastic bracket, PVC railing and aluminum reinforcing insert .

Nonreinforced and/or hollow rails must be secured to the bracket with four No .8 by 1-1/2 inch long (38 mm), stainless steel, self-drilling pan-head screws (two on each side of the rail) that penetrate the plastic bracket and PVC railing . The bracket must be secured to the posts with four No .8 by 1-1/2 inch long (38 mm), stainless steel, self-drilling pan head screws .

Balusters are 1-3/4 inch (38 mm) fluted, 1-1/2 inch square (38 mm), or 2-inch square (51 mm) colonial hollow PVC pickets that are installed into routed holes in the top and bottom rails . See Figure 2 for assembly drawings .

5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE

The Sheerline 3250 Series PVC guardrail system described in this report complies with, or is a suitable alternative to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1 .0 of this report, subject to the following conditions:

5.1 The use of guardrail system is limited to exterior use as a guard system for balconies and porches for one and two-family dwellings of Type V-B (IBC) construction and structures constructed in accordance with the IRC .

5.2 Installation must comply with this report, the manufacturer’s published installation instructions and the applicable code . Only those fasteners and fastener configurations described in this report have been evaluated for the installation of the Sheerline guardrail system . When the manufacturer’s published installation instructions differ from this report, this report governs .

5.3 The use of wood posts, with or without post sleeves, is outside the scope of this report .

5.4 The top rail component of the guardrail system must not be permitted to be used as a handrail for stairways or ramps .

5.5 The compatibility of the fasteners , metal post mount components and other metal hardware with the supporting construction, including chemically treated wood, is outside the scope of this report .

5.6 Adjustment factors outlined in the AF&PA National Design Standard and applicable codes must not apply to the allowable capacity and maximum spans for the deck railing system .

5.7 The guardrail system must be directly fastened to supporting construction . Where required by the code official, engineering calculations and construction documents consistent with this report must be submitted for approval . The calculations must verify that the supporting construction complies with the applicable building code requirements and is adequate to resist the loads imparted upon it from the products and systems discussed in this report . The documents must contain details of the attachment to the supporting structure consistent with the requirements of this report . The documents must be prepared by a registered design professional where required by the statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is to be constructed .

5.8 The Sheerline guardrail system is produced in Mooresville, North Carolina, under a quality control program with inspections by Architectural Testing Inc . (AA-676) .

6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED

Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Criteria for Deck Board Span Ratings and Guardrail Systems (Guards and Handrails) (AC174), dated February 2008 .

7.0 IDENTIFICATION

The Sheerline 3250 Series PVC guardrail system described in this report is identified by a stamp on each individual piece or on the packaging bearing the manufacturer’s name (L . B . Plastics, Inc .), the product type, the name of the inspection agency (Architectural Testing Inc .) and the ICC-ES evaluation report number (ESR-2465) The label must also include the phrase “For Use in One-and Two-Family Dwellings Only .”

2.0 USES

The LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing is limited to exterior use as rails for balconies, porches and decks . The products described in this report are used in exterior applications in Group R Occupancy buildings of Type V-B (IBC) construction, in other applications where untreated wood is permitted by IBC Section 1406 .3, and in dwellings constructed in accordance with the IRC . (See Table 1 for occupancy and other restrictions .)

3.0 DESCRIPTION

3.1 General:

The LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing consists of PVC components complying with cell classification 16354 as prescribed by ASTM D 1784, and aluminum rail reinforcement members . The LB . Plastics 3000 Series railing system is manufactured by an extrusion process in three colors: white, beige and clay .

3.2 Guardrail System:

The LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing is manufactured for balconies, porches and decks . The system is recognized for guards having a height of 36 inches to 42 inches (914 mm to 1067 mm) . Baluster spacing forms openings of approximately 3-1/2 inches (89 mm) . Each style (Square picket and Colonial Spindle) includes extruded PVC top and bottom rails and balusters; aluminum top rail reinforcement members made from aluminum alloy 6063-T6; and intermediate support The attachment system is designed for mounting the railing to a column or wall . There are two types of mounting brackets: (1) the PVC top rail bracket and (2) the PVC bottom rail bracket The rail system must be field-assembled using 1-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch (38 mm by 38 mm) square or molded PVC profile balusters . See Figures 1 through 8 for part profiles .

3.2.1 Durability: When subjected to weathering, insect attack, and other decaying elements . the material used to manufacture the LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing is equivalent in durability to preservative-treated or naturally durable lumber when used in locations described in Section 2 .0 of this report . The LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing has been evaluated for a temperature range from -20°F (-29°C) to 125°F (52°C) .

3.2.2 Surface-burning Characteristics: When tested in accordance with ASTM E 84, the PVC material usedin the LB . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing has a name spread index of no more than 200 .

4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION

4.1 General:

Installation of the L .B . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing, described in this report, must comply with this report and the manufacturer’s published installation instructions . The manufacturer’s published installation instructions must be available at the jobsite at all times during installation .

4.2 Structural:

The L .B . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing system is satisfactory to resist the loads specified in Section 1607 .7 .1 of the IBC and Table R301 .5 of the IRC when installed at a maximum 120-inch (3 m) clear span . When a railing is supported on one or both ends by supporting construction, the maximum distance must be measured from the inside of the column to edge-of-structure, or from edge-of-structure to edge-of-structure, respectively . See Table 1 (notes) for actual measurements of rail .

4.3 Installation:

The maximum allowable span of the railing system is 96 inches (2438 mm) measured from edge to edge of column or wall for residential applications (IBC); and 120 inches (3048 mm) measured from edge to edge of column or wall for One- and Two-Family Dwelling applications (IRC) . The top rails must be reinforced with the aluminum members provided with the 3000 Series Plastic Railing System . Before installation of the rails, the baluster members must be friction-fitted into the openings provided in the rails . The railing system components must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s published installation instructions .

Brackets attach to the column or wall with four No . 10 by 2-1/2 inch, stainless steel, self-starting bugle-head screws . The rail brackets must be fastened to the rail with two No . 8 by 1-1/2 inch, stainless steel, self-starting pan-head screws, one on each side of the bracket . The retaining screws must penetrate the PVC bracket, rail, and aluminum insert .

5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE

The L .B . Plastics 3000 Series Plastic Railing described in this report complies with, or is a suitable alternative to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1 .0 of this report, subject to the following conditions:

Limited WarrantyL . B . Plastics Incorporated ("L . B . Plastics") makes the following Limited Warranty on its Sheerline Deck, Rail & Fence Systems (the "Systems") subject to the terms and conditions below . This Limited Warranty is for the exclusive benefit of the original owner of the property on which the Systems are installed whose name appears on the attached Limited Warranty Registration Card . This Limited Warranty is not assignable or transferable .

1 . We warrant that the rigid vinyl extrusions in the Systems will not blister, corrode, flake, peel, rot, or warp under conditions of normal use and service, because of manufacturing defects in the rigid vinyl extrusions, for as long as the original owner of the property on which the Systems are first installed owns the property .

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER defects or damages attributable to (a) installation or any consequences of faulty installation of the Systems including failure, damage, or deterioration caused by faulty installation; (b) modification, alteration, repair or service to the Systems by anyone other than L . B . Plastics or authorized agent; (c) physical abuse to, misuse contrary to the instructions furnished with the Systems; (d) normal weathering, chalking, fading, atmospheric pollutants or mildew buildup; (e) fire, flood, lightning, windstorm, tornadoes, hurricanes, accidents, or any other acts of God; (f) any other causes beyond the control of L . B . Plastics and unrelated to the manufacturing process .

The sole obligation of L . B . Plastics under this Limited Warranty shall be limited to repairing or replacing, at the option of L . B . Plastics, defective parts or components of the Systems .

L . B . Plastics reserves the right to discontinue or change any systems . as manufactured . If the Systems covered by this Limited Warranty are not available, L . B . Plastics shall have the right to substitute a product that, in the sole discretion of L . B . Plastics, is of equal quality or value . This Limited Warranty does not include any costs incurred in the removal or replacement, reassembly, installation, or reinstallation of the Systems nor does it include any costs and expenses incurred in returning the Systems to the factory if return is required by L . B . Plastics .

THIS WARRANTY WILL BE EFFECTIVE ONLY IF THE ATTACHED LIMITED WARRANTY REGISTRATION CARD IS SIGNED BY THE OWNER AND MAILED TO THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS OF THE INSTALLATION OF THE SYSTEMS: L . B . PLASTICS INCORPORATED, P . 0 . BOX 907, MOORESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 28115 U .S .A .; ATTENTION: WARRANTY DEPARTMENT .

ANY CLAIM UNDER THIS LIMITED WARRANTY must be made within the applicable warranty period and must be made promptly after any breach of the Limited Warranty is discovered by the owner . The claim must be made in writing and mailed to L . B . Plastics Incorporated, P . 0 . Box 907, Mooresville, North Carolina 28115 U .S .A .; Attention: Warranty Department . The claim must describe the defect and include this warranty document or a reference to the date on which it was issued, the certificate number of the Limited Warranty, and the owner's name and address . If the claim falls within the Limited Warranty, L . B . Plastics, will instruct you to ship the defective systems back to L . B . Plastics, prepaid freight .

L . B . Plastics will pay freight charges back to your address .

ANY EXPRESS WARRANTY NOT PROVIDED HEREIN IS HEREBY EXCLUDED AND DISCLAIMED . ADDITIONALLY, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FORA PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED TO THE TERM OF THIS WARRANTY . SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU .

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL L . B . PLASTICS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER ARISING OUT OF BREACH OR ANY EXPRESS WRITTEN, ORAL OR IMPLIED WARRANTY, BREACH OF CONTRACT OR OTHERWISE .
