My Uncle Wes once told me “Life is one school you do not want to skip class on”. What a summer this has been! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. But I now have a good idea what Uncle Wes was talking about. More times than I can keep track, this summer has reminded, you do not take anything for granted. The weather for miles around us made it obvious that you can’t pick when the sun will shine or when it will give way to rain. We had one pasture under four feet of water for over five weeks. In July I was stringing some hot wire through some tall summer pasture and found myself in a patch of water covering at least 30 acres. It’s now the first of October and we have dust wherever we step. The fact that we didn’t get near as much water as southeast Saskatchewan nor are we anywhere close to being as dry as Texas leaves me thankful yet sympathetic to what some of our fellow breeders are going through. Hang in there!

Nancy has been solid like a rock this summer while I took more than a few weeks off to recover from a major infection. I proved just how useless and wussy I could really be. You don’t have much if you don’t have health, family, and friends.

While our traveling has been curtailed, don’t begin to think that we will be cutting back at WLB. Our interest in Herefords is stronger than ever. We have a greater desire to “make things happen” in our program than ever before. We have taken on some additional cows from the Shell River program. We are expanding our International semen inventory as well as our international donor/semen program. Yes we will strive to lighten our workload but we will do it by being even more vigilant about producing cattle that can look after themselves.

This will be our third Internet sale. While we have these sales to generate revenue to pay bills, the first two have taught us that the real benefit of these internet sales is the opportunity to talk with Hereford breeders from across North America and around the world. Each year the reach goes a little further and the power of the Internet becomes even more amazing.

Nancy and I invite you to have a look at our Internet heifers. We’re proud of them and feel they are our strongest group yet. We would like to reserve the right to a flush on any of the heifers with buyers consent. We think you will easily find something to like in this group.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSJunior breeders incentive payment: In addition to being a participant in the Canadian Junior Hereford Association heifer lottery, Nancy and I are pleased to offer to any junior buyers of a WLB INTERNET HEIFER(Canada and US) a $100 payment upon receiving a picture of you showing your WLB internet heifer at any show. While we wish you the best you do not have to win a championship or a class but you do have to participate in a cattle show of your choosing and you do have to send us a photo (email preferred). All photos become the property of WLB and may be used in WLB promotions. Herd Health: All 2011 born calves have been vaccinated with Express 5/Somugena modified live vaccine for IBR, PI3, BVD, RSV as well as for blackleg with covexin plus(7way). They have received Ivomec (spring/fall)

Payment: No animal shall leave WLB until full payment has been received. Any heifers remaining at WLB because of payment still owing after 30 days will be charged a room and board fee of $4/day. We remind you that all heifers are at the buyers risk 24 hours after the sale. Please insure your purchases.

Insurance: Buyers can insure their purchases with their chosen representative or we can forward appropriate information to Lois McRae who represents Livestock Insurance Managers, Saskatoon, SK. Please let us know if you would like us to contact Lois on your behalf.

Delivery: Every assistance will be given to help in the shipment of your purchase. Your heifers are welcome to remain at WLB for a reasonable time, until shipping arrangements can be made.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Hereford Association, which can be transferred to the American Hereford Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

Guarantee: Each animal becomes the purchaser’s risk 24 hours after the sale. All animals in the sale are sold under the terms and guarantees set forth by the Canadian Hereford Association with regard to health, freedom from defects and from both reproductive and genetic unsoundness. All females selling in this sale are guaranteed to be HYF, DLF, and IEF. Please call us if you have any questions about our guarantee.

Breeding Guarantee: All heifers are guaranteed breeders however, in recognition that overfeeding can be detrimental to the reproductive ability of a young female, if we feel that a heifer has been fed to an extreme level of obesity for the show ring, we will hold the feeder responsible for any reproductive problems and therefore no longer be responsible to guarantee that particular animal.

We hope you find a WLB heifer that catches your interest. Listed below is important information for our U.S. buyers. We ask you to read and familiarize yourself with this information. We have exported a number of cattle to the U.S. in the last few years and have become familiar with the necessary 1. arrangements needed to cross the border. If a U.S. buyer wishes for WLB to arrange shipping we will do so to the best of our ability. Part of arranging U.S. shipments is dealing with specific dates and times that cattle have to meet US trucks. Taking advantage of these opportunities can help keep your shipping cost within reason. If these opportunities are missed then this means individual animals may have to bear the entire cost of being shipped to their U.S. destination. In other words your shipping cost may go up. Prompt payment insures your heifer is available to take advantage of these shipping opportunities when they arise. We will be happy to assist with the paperwork and getting your purchases across the border. In lieu of U.S. Customs and 2. brokerage charges: U.S. buyers will be charged $250 for each animal purchased along with the purchase price, which will go toward the export cost. WLB INTERNET AUCTION DATES AND TIMESThe auction has been set to run from 9:00 a.m. CST on Thursday, November 10th, 2011 with the Internet close out gavel coming down on the first lot at 7:00 p.m. CST Monday, November 14. We will use a 30 or 45 second bidding clock until all lots are sold. Meaning once the pre announced time has expired without a bid that heifer will be considered sold to the last highest bidder. A sale order will be posted 9:00 Monday morning. If you don’t have computer access, phone in bids will be accepted at the numbers listed below. Be sure to register early to allow the necessary time to be put in to the system.

HOW TO PARTICIPATEIn order to participate in the online auction• you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. To do this, go to the LiveAuctions website, • www.liveauctions.tv, and select WLB Livestock Online Auction. After logging in the buyer registration form should pop up automatically. If it doesn’t there is a link you can select that •says, “register for a buyer number”. This form requires you to fill out your banks name, city, state, phone number and a contact. •You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous.•

HOW THE AUCTION WORKSOnce you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is •unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The •next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out”.No one else will be able to see your bid• – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique •and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected.• This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable.

WHAT IS A PROXY BID?With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount theLiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than yourmaximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time anotherbid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’tbe near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding.Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount onyour screen no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and thesystem automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bidposition. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. The final close out bidding processAfter each sale we receive a few calls from breeders who were interested in bidding on a heifer but failed to watch the bidding clock and let the bidding time expire. When the bidding starts The bidding clock will run for a preannounced time (usually 30/45 seconds or until there is a bid at which time the clock will rewind to its original 30 or 45 seconds. (Whatever time that was preannounce). For example: if the bidding clock gets down to 1 second remaining then a higher bid is submitted, the clock willthen restart. This rewind process will continue with each bid received until the allotted time elapses without abid. Then the lot will be considered sold. So if you are interested in a particular heifer ,be sure to submit your bidwhile there is still time on the clock. Those of you who have heard me talk Hereford for the last 30 years will know the importance we place on cow characteristics even with our heifer calves. Broody is an often-used term of ours. Nancy and I can really appreciate a female that starts to display a broody appearance at an early age. This ET heifer has that look. She’s broody from front to back. Her depth and capacity starts at her muzzle and carries right through. She displays volume in every aspect of her make up. She’s wide topped and equally wide underneath. She’s the type that will give you a lot of flexibility when it comes to choosing which bull to breed her to. What’s neat about this girl is she doesn’t just stand on phenotype alone. She is loaded with proven productive ancestry. Her dam, WLB 035J Flora 14N is the mother of WLB Global 72M 50S. The Jan 17F cow family behind her is also responsible for the 2004 Canadian Reserve National Champion Polled Hereford Bull, WLB 035J Fleet 20M. This was the one and only time Fleet ever entered a show ring. Enid’s sire NJW Embassy also brings a lot to the table. His dam, the Ladysport cow is one of Ned and Jan’s favorites. His sire, Embracer, has sired many high dollar sons. No matter which arena, pasture or showring, you are looking to play, Lot 1 deserves your attention.

This year we have catalogued the heifers by their sire groups. 78Y is not only a top individual among the Eli’s but also a standout of the entire WLB heifer crop. She’s square in her appearance while being angular in her skeletal structure. Her balance of mass to bone is right on. She’s very complete in her hip and quarter and has a top that completes her look in a powerful way. She shows a lot of strength in her stride yet she’s soft in her step. I sometimes think I see her getting deeper right in front of me. Her type and style alone says she deserves serious consideration by any one wanting to make their presence known in the show ring. Her genetics are equally strong as she traces back to one of our favorite Shell River Cow families. If Shell River’s 10D cow is in a pedigree you can bet you will find a big hip, plenty of milk and great udders. You will find 10D just off the bottom of 78Y’s pedigree.

One of my biggest regrets this summer was not getting a picture of 76W while she was wet. Not only does she have a no-fault udder, it was a pleasure to watch this attentive two-year-old Global daughter mothering her Eli heifer calf She did it as if she had done it for years. 89Y never lacked for milk or her mothers affection. I have a picture of this Eli daughter at a week of age on my cell phone. She is another good testament to the mothering ability of the Global daughters. This is 35U’s second calf and she’s done another superb job. Good enough to qualify for our ET program. Her first calf, WLB Lego 83T 90X is our calving ease semen sire and a full brother to 90Y. He and his dam were 2010 Agribition class winners in the two-year-old cow/calf class. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better balance of muscle and femininity all in one heifer with 90Y. She was well looked after by her mother, but now that she is on her own, I would have to say I am even more impressed with this heifer because of her accelerated post weaning development.
